Mostly PC work, I don't do much lab work myself anymore. I personally find lab work fun though. Designing new primers, optimizing procedures etc.You know, actually accomplishing things, seeing actual results from work that you've done and not something that you do because someone told you to do it.
This is very satisfying to me.
Oh and the ~2-3 months a year dicking around in tropical regions to collect samples and conduct experiments are nice too.

I took a year off and went to spend time with an uncle who was doing research in Vanuatu. By the time we moved to Fiji I was basically living as a beach bum. The shaman approached me and asked for help in reading English and I ended up going with him to help in that capacity after letting my uncle know. After that we traveled around the islands in a voyaging canoe as he helped local people with traditional duties such as funeral rites, while I helped him mostly with speaking and reading English but also however else I could. Supporting ourselves was easy enough off of basic survival skills which he was quite good at and taught me, but also the generosity of the people we helped.
Eventually it was more than just him and me on the voyaging canoe, and we ended up resembling and adventuring party for awhile I imagine.

What you're looking at seems to be the functional domain of that protein, in a short region the amino acids go hydrophobic > hydrophilic > hydrophobic (red > blue > red) and so on. That seems very non-random so it's probably important.
In my reference that pattern is strong but not perfect, there is one methionine in there that is not as hydrophobic as the others. In the species I'm assembling there is a single mutation that switches that methionine to an isoleucine, which is more hydrophobic and makes that pattern "better". This is pure conjecture but to me it looks like an advantageous mutation, which is fucking amazing considering how rare they are.
