Picked up a few decks recently, have been kitchen-tabling it. Mechanically seems to have a very 90s MTG feel to it.

What is /tg/'s opinion on Anime: The Gathering?
>>
I just bought a couple decks myself but have to wait until tomorrow to try them out. I hear its really good.
>>
Eh, nobody really plays it. Plus, the whole fairy tale thing is getting old.
>>
>expecting /tg/ to talk about any card game other than mtg

But on topic the game is fun but the design team is retarded basically hard pushing certain cards to the point where format tempo warps to their mana cost. Hopefully it will survive the next few blocks and clean up it's act to become the anime mtg we deserve.

Its early, but its look like its catching on with /tg/.

If you introduce people to the game, they just might play it.

>>44787207
>Good decks
You don't have to spend $100s on any card game.
The fact that they can price it that way accounts for how well the game is catching on.

I just wish they had online play.

Blue was always cancerous. Playing against a blue deck back in 90ties was as fun as playing against modern eggs.
>>
>>44787323
>MtG with terms swapped
The core mana system is very very different from MtG.
the game does not feel like MtG.
Feels more balanced.
>>
>>44787300
Black Summer was late 90s, right?
Or was that Combo Winter?
Heck, weren't they both during the 90s? What a miserable time to play.
>>
>>44787356
Also there are no instant cards bunch of other things.

I think Wixoss would have a less hard time if they didn't have those weird card type names.

The reality is, MtG is so old its hard to say what you can and can't play like MtG with the correct cards etc..
But that's expensive and tedious. Plus, these games are working with these specific differences as their core.

Meanwhile, MtG and its players still have to deal with a system which, at its core, creates issues with mana screw/flood.
>>
>>44787406
Oh, and actually I think this is more convincing. When you attack the opponent, there's like a 50/50 chance of a card being used and that card then goes to the ener (land) zone.
Also, I think monster cards go to the ener zone when they die a lot? I don't remember if that's a rule that they just die and go to the ener zone if you don't discard them, but used cards do tend to end up in the ener zone.

You also draw two cards every turn and can put cards from the play into the ener zone, soyou always have something to use to pay cost.
>>
It's better than MtG mechanically, but that's about it. It still has the same shitty product structure, the same or possibly worse fanbase thanks to their poorly chosen fluff material, far worse artwork, far worse lore, less market saturation and thus less people to play with, as said there's no online version (though even no online version is probably an improvement over the abomination that is MTGO). There's more or less no way this overtakes even YGO or Pokemon let alone MtG. Normally I wouldn't care about things like that, but we're talking about a game you need people to play with and how popular the game is has a very big influence on that. Overall the fact that it's essentially just Magic but better is pretty enticing, but that's not enough. I'm not going to buy into another one of these money pits.
>>
>>44787362
Maybe he was going off some other aspect of 90s MtG.

The artwork on these cards isn't too bad.
Lot of anime shit, but even then not too bad.
People rag on it a lot for its animu style and I kinda don't blame them (it does make me feel a little weeb), but this is still decent quality art.

Well.. there are always ways to work around that.
I noticed that Wixoss on Amazon sells pretty cheap. you could include notes about cards based off Webxoss. Maybe put them in the sleeve with the card?
That would probably damage the card.
Still, you could have notes.
>>
Fucking weebs.
>>
>>44787139
Sorry Wixoss, even though I love you more you completely failed to catch on in my city. I've failed you.

Now Force of Will, it's easier to find a pickup game of that than it is Magic these days around here.

>>44787618
They're pretty good for new players, they aren't complicated but they've got realistic win conditions and some good cards, and most of them can be built up into fairly strong decks with a few additions.

The weakest out of the box is Rezzard simply because it's not hard to shut down the deck's graveyard shenanigans, Arla and Valentina can both be ball-busting if your deck is soft, and the other two are somewhere in the middle.
>>
>>44787943
I actually don't get why it matters if it catches on. Especially with Japanese games which have found their way to American shelves through whatever unusual means.

If you have weeb friends, you can always show them the game and if you like the game, why not buy them as collectors items any way?

That's my opinion any way.

I agree. If its got a base market, it should last long enough you don't need to worry about it disappearing.

Seems like TCGs are popular in Japan just in general.

Besides, if it doesn't catch on... Maybe that's because you're not actually trying to see if anyone wants to try it out.

Vancouver, WA

FOW has been the single most played game outside of regularly scheduled MTG events for like the last month at our shop.

Of course MTG is still the big dog because of the horde 20+ FNM scrubs that flock to the shop every Friday to go 2-3 again, but they don't count as "people", they're more walking prize pool inflation devices.
>>
>>44788257
Interesting.
So you think that even though MtG is still popular because of its base players, FoW is easier to get into and commands a somewhat different market?

>>44788209
Ok, see this bad boy? This is Yog-Sothoth, you can summon him by sacrificing 3 creatures instead of paying his mana cost. This alternate summoning method is common among Cthulhu-type creatures, but he's the biggest and baddest of them.

In rough MTG terms he'd be an 8/8 with Trample, who blows up all 2-mana or less creatures when he enters the battlefield.

Now there's this other creature called Rasputin. 100/100 for 1, and when it dies you can pay 200 life (that's 1 life in MTG terms) to get it back to your hand. So if you get a good hand you can puke out Yog on turn 2 and get them all back to hand if you want.

If your opponent isn't playing low-cost hard removal they just fucking die.

>>44787603
There was a thread of fow vs mtg that lasted days anon.

We still agreedt the end mtg is better, but the desicions wizards made with the double rotation and the lackk of support is repeling newbies away.

FoW art is attrocious with some of the cards being decent, but the new sets have some cool cards. I liked some eldritch art in the last thread.
>>
>>44788779
>FoW art is attrocious
Just to be sure, you do realize those background-less ones were like early promos or something right?

>We still agreed in the end mtg is better
No we didn't.
We literally never agreed that MtG is better. There was just a bunch of anons talking about expense.
>>
>>44788883
That first part of my post is an honest question, by the way.

When I looked at this post, I thought it might seem a little sarcastic or something and I didn't intend anything like that...
>>
If it was the same as MtG - even exactly the same as MtG at its core - but still lacked that horrible sense of commercialism that I feel when I play MtG or look at MtG cards and prices, then I'm all for it.

I've seen worse (or at least less interesting) looking MtG cards. Sometimes, I feel like the artwork on a Magic card is just bland and empty.
People just notice it more if its weeb.
>>
>>44787224
The price, the weeb art and the similar mechanics with mtg is what is making this shit game popular.
>>
>>44788449
Wixoss doesn't have cthulhus, does it?

>>
>>44787485
Well, the game is actually selling. Not at the level of yugioh, pokemon or magic, but it is selling. There are players and many lgs are betting on this game.

The game was there since beginning of last year, but nobody gave a shit till august that it started to get acceptance from the publlic.
>>
>>44788342
Damn that card look like kozilek and ulamog having sex.
>>
>>44787485
>Its better than MtG mechanically, but that's about it
That's really all you need, IMO.
As long as the art doesn't look like it was drawn by a 3 year old, chris-chan or is just made up of stick figures and its mechanically superior, I'm good to go.
Just buy stronger sleeves.
>>
>>44789165
I'm a disgusting weeb. I don't need cthulhu.
>>
>>44785503
General consensus is that it has superior rules, worse art (weebs will disagree, ignoring the fact that the weeb bait art is why it is worse). It's going to lay about as long as tiny leaders did before vanishing.
>>
>>44789397
>tiny leaders
That's still MtG.
>>
>>44789428
And?
>>
>>44789397
>weeb bait art
You sound angry.
Also, its not "weeb bait" because weebs as we know them don't actually exist in Japan.
Unlike the west, they don't actually have this muh superior regional art style bullshit. That's not to say I don't think anime is generally drawn more cheaply and all, but its not done for the reasons you seem to think its done for.

MtG does have superior art, but its not as bad as you're making it sound.
>>
>>44789397
They also give less of a fuck about "the secondary market" as shown by them reprinting multiple staples in a collection box and starter decks containing multiple 4-ofs of cards that have a rarity corresponding to Mythic Rares.

That really is the main selling point for me currently.
>>
>>44789481
In Japan, it would be otaku bait art.

This isn't a regional art thing either. There is good art in Japan. None of it is anime, regardless of the nation that produced it.
>>
>>44788257
Hell, if I can find pickup games in West Virginia I can't imagine anyone else having a hard time.
>>
>>44789444
>And?
And its not a good comparison for someone making a new card game with almost but not quite the same mechanics and different cards.

Its not like someone's going to use their FoW cards in an MtG deck. This is something that competes with Magic which makes it very different with a different kind of motivational push to it.
>>
>>44789558
You're right. Tiny leaders had the benefit of using cards people already owned. And it still died. Force of will is even more doomed.
>>
>>44789635
I don't know if it is doomed or not, but that's still a shit comparison.

The difference is that the people who are interested in the game will buy the cards. Those people cannot exchange their deck, so they would keep playing the game.

With a difference in format, the people who are playing it would just switch over to a different format and forget about the old one.
There's a bigdifference between an abandoned format and an abandoned TCG.

Formats can be picked up easily, but can also die easily if people just stop caring. A new TCG is harder to push out, but the ones who do purchase it will have those cards around until they decide to sell them. They would also probably be bigger fans, not just experimenters in a new format.

Its just not a good comparison.
>>
My LGS has had a good number of long time MTG fans just switch to FoW because they don't like where MTG is heading.

Our store now has about an average of 12 people a night for FoW, 3 times a week.
>>
>>44790018
Same here
Mtg is kind of dying in my lgs. I dont think fow will surpass magic on its own merits but with the help of wizards themselves making the formats unavailable for everyone.
No fucking new players to consume the recent products, and modern players just dont bother with it and buy their shit online.
>>
>>44789991
I made a mess off that post, but you get the idea.

>>44790018
Sounds fairly popular at your shop. What is driving them to switch over?
>>
>>44790099
the ones I have talked to said a lot of the change with "waste" mana becoming a type in MTG - and how the meta is focusing more and more on a single type of gameplay rather then trying different things.

MTG is still big here, FNM still pulls about 24 people and draft pulls about 12.
>>

There's a lackeyccg plugin that works pretty well if you don't mind doing the effects manually as if you were playing the game in real-time, it's updated to the latest set and everything. Finding people to play with can be a bitch, but it's a decent deckbuilding tool

/tg/ doesn't like it but Hearthstone is seriously this. Much better business model for the player, much better card design (no Maro, making intentionally bad cards to trick new players or water down limited isn't good design) and despite the bad PR in the tabletop community it actually has about the same amount of luck since the non-randomized mana more than makes up for the odd randomized ping or shredder or drop. Obviously better online presence as well which is becoming increasingly important in our society, fewer people are bringing deck boxes out with them when they can just play a better game on the miniature computer that is going to be in their pocket anyway.
