You are Laura Kinney, mutant vagrant.
Half the world vanishes as a shard of glass tears along one side of your skull. You feel the pressure of the expanding gases, Zhang Lei in his vaporous form, lift you off your feet and hurl you into the air, coating your skin with a hundred or more tiny speckles of broken window. Before you hit the ground, you’re already assessing the damage – feeling out your contours, dissecting the pain of the cuts and the bruises into guesses and estimates.
Minor injuries, save for your eye. You will heal quickly, and be back at peak performance in less than a minute.
The gas recedes, washing backwards over the lavish apartment as if the reverse recording of the earlier explosion, and soon enough Zhang is standing before you in human form, poised as if to move at a moment’s notice, his sunken eyes watching you carefully.
Just behind you, a trio of Laylas are crouching down beside Nico, who appears to have manifested some kind of shimmering barrier. She does not look combat ready – from her posture, you speculate that she has little if any proficiency in fighting, despite her apparent superhuman abilities.
You estimate that John will arrive in less than a minute.

A familiar, sharp pain stabs along your knuckles, dulled instantly by a rush of adrenaline. You push yourself to your feet, your wounds no longer mattering to you now that you’ve determined their paltry nature. Zhang steps back slightly, the shine of your claws sparking in his eyes, and you rush across the apartment toward him. You must keep him away from Layla, keep him away from Nico.
You slash at him, and note that, rather than dissipating, he leans away from your claws, a hiss escaping his throat as their edges just about fail to graze his skin. Turning your effort to retaining your momentum, you spring into an arcing kick, the blade set into your foot sliding free of its sheath, aiming to drive down through his shoulder, along his ribcage, and through his right lung.
He manages to dart aside, surprisingly quick for a man that appears so physically haggard, and you hear him mutter something in Cantonese, though his voice is too low for you to make it out. He has however, placed himself within easy reach of your arm, and you…
You see him tense, his stomach wrenching, as you move in for the final blow. You feel sick, and… you stop.
He explodes into a cloud of mist. Almost immediately, he reforms beside you, and you feet a boot slam into your midsection. The floor vanishes from beneath your feet, a clearly inhuman force behind the blow, and you sail across the room, striking the opposite wall hard.

Zhang’s storage space is located below his apartment, on a hidden floor that does not appear on the building’s schematics. You must get there, and you must get there quickly.
On the other side of the apartment, Zhang reforms, and is quickly pummeled through his couch by a beam of bright blue light. His silence is telling – he flails his arms, the force of the blast clearly dazing him, but he makes no sound. As John charges over the length of the room, he dissipates, his gaseous form rushing to meet his attacker.
You turn your attention away, and, taking the quickest available route to your destination, plunge your claws into the floor at your feet. All it takes for a small section of the floor to give way under your weight is a quick, semi-circular flourish. You drop down into an unlit expanse, the sound of your impact echoing loudly through the dark. Up above, you hear a crash.
All around you are various glass cases, each of them housing a dim, strange shape.
Something drops down beside you, and you immediately prepare to attack.
“Owwwww…” Layla – two Laylas, after striking the ground – rubs her head, nursing a slight bruise.
You realize that you are alone with her.

You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.
You’re not entirely sure what just happened, but you’re glad it did.
Nico said something, and then… it was like a whirlwind just tore its way into the room, sucking up the mist guy and hurling him straight through the blasted window-panels that line one side of the apartment. He hasn’t come back, so you assume he’s had enough of being thrown around and punched silly for one night.
Nico clutches her staff (what? Where’d that come from?) tightly, a profoundly relieved look on her face. You can smell the adrenaline coursing through her, a thing equal in parts of fear and excitement.
“Wow.” You give her a thumbs up. Your bones ache little, but you’ll be fine. “Nice work.”
“…Thanks.” She says, her voice quavering.
A few feet away, where the couch once sat, the carpet bulges slightly, and a trapdoor opens in the floor. Laura emerges, her eyes surveying the scene in silence, at least a dozen Laylas surfacing behind her. You immediately notice the faint echo of a nasty gash along her face, a slight spark of anger lighting up in your chest.
“…You okay?”
Laura nods. Her stance is a little forlorn, though, like she’s trying to make herself marginally smaller.
“The item was not here.”

No, they are fundamentally different.
The Rauoskinna doesn't have a will of its own to bring darkness to the world and cause death, it's pretty much a compendium of black magic that held such knowledge and power in it that you would be simply put, the best magician ever.
I think one of the selling points was you would get so gud at magic that you could control Satan himself.
So it's more a tool than the Necronomicon would be, and only cause problems in the way that people coming after it would provide.
But I forgot a lot about it, so I guess I'll go reread about it instead of spreading probable misinformation.
