While I do agree with you, there is the downside of not having what's his fuck's brain damage, and by extension his lack of revulsion at the subsequent world. Sure, yes, absolutely, net gain for life on earth, why fight the cthulhu when you can become the cthulhu, but it will take years before civilization gets used to the change, maybe even decades before the resulting sights, tastes and smells are adapted to.
