I personally would say no, magic isn't a beam of light, in the sense that you couldn't shoot a fire ball at a mirror and amplify it, but magical sources of light, like create light or Lazer based spells of sorts might work

Magic mirror lore pertaining to wizards, a wizard has to have a connection to each mirror "personal belongings" you can't just say I use a mirror to redirect a spell. Just like any magic there are ways to use and abuse the ability. Just like scrying you have to learn.

I get what you're saying, but it requires context.
The yearly budget of NASA is just over 17 billion. That sounds like a lot, until you realise that more than twenty billion gets spent per year on movies in the US. Not exciting enough? 90 billion gets spent per year on alcohol in the US alone. 200 billion dollars are spent in the US on ADVERTISING. Still not enough? The US annual military budget is more than 660 billion.
Space exploration at least gives us useful (earthly) technologies as a side-effect. It engages the creativity of engineers, inspiring to produce what they would otherwise never think to design. If money were the solution to world hunger, we would be better off cutting our spending on booze, crappy remakes, and sponsoring rebellion and terrorism in the Middle East than cutting our space budget.

In the setting I'm currently building sorcery is the extremely intellectual, mechanistic form of magic. It used to require all kinds of crazy tools to do anything significant, basically an entire massive lab worth of prisms, mirrors, bells, wands, athame and symbols to create any important effect.
But then the great research wizard Yvarthenael developed a branch of mystical mathematics that he called Celestial Calculus, but everybody now calls Yvarthenael Transforms, which allow much smaller, more portable sets of symbols and tools. Mirrors are no longer required except for research sorcery, though some sorcerers construct their symbol books to use a mirror as one of their primary tools. It's mostly out of style, but was considered to be best for mind affecting spells.
There's also a witch that uses an enchanted mirror to capture the "eidolon" of a person, which she can summon as a kind of doppelganger or use to control people.
