What, specifically, are you looking for? Sometimes bands like Raubtier (odd choose now that I think about it but they're guilty pleasure:), Iron Maiden, Savatage or Sabaton for more thematic or storydriven songs that aren't that hard.
If you want something as specific as Egyptian death metal and one of my favourite bands, something like Nile might be it.
I can't ever not recommend Bolt Thrower, espresso socially on /tg/. Their realm of chaos is a masterpiece.
To be honest The Sword is something you should give a listen to, they are Damn funky while keeping it heavy and their stories are top notch though they prolly aren't what your looking for.
For purely instrumental, the only thing I can think of is Animals as Leaders and they vary on how Heavy they are, though they're inspired by Messugah so take that as you will.
I've used Electric Wizard and Sleep for background music before as well.
As I said, this is just a very broad recommendation list and it would help to know more specifics

Sabaton was my first reaction. Then I thought Five Finger Death Punch, Unleash the Archers, or Powerwolf.
But really, classical is one of the best.
Or something like Audiomachine of Two Steps From Hell.
Why?
Because "epic orchestral" has great sweeping sounds without any words. Words make these kinds of things too confusing for background, which is why classical is so good. But classical might not be heavy enough. TSFH is great for this kind of stuff and Audiomachine is great (they do trailer music for just about everything now.

If you're doing battles then it has to be Sabaton. There may be better music out there but nothing more appropriate for big, cheesy, stupid battles. Powerwolf and Hammerfall are also options for a more Templar themed shindig but if you start talking about specific themes IN ADDITION to battles then things get utterly labyrnthian.
