Why isn't your high fantasy setting the apocalyptic remnants of a Sci-Fi setting?

To be fair i made a homebrew postapocalyptic setting that what was left of the Papal States formed a Crusading Order of power armored knights and tank platoons that were hell bent on killing any kind of mutant or heretic.

It actually is exactly that. Humanity tried to drill to the moon through a universe made of space magic and fucked up. Now people ride mounts and ramshackle cars about while being chased by ogres and kobolds.

I mean, calling Numenera "post-apocalyptic" is maybe a bit of a stretch due to the timeframe involved, but it's definitely a fantasy setting formed from the remnants of a sci-fi one.

It's built on the remains of a Tippyverse setting. A primary race in my setting is ice assassins whose bodies have been used to hold thousands of minds, and can call up memories in the form of skill bonuses.

Why is his art so shit?

Because that's his older art.
>>
>>44582581
My high fantasy setting is loosely based on the parts of the Destiny canon I liked coupled with a technological spin on Dark Souls and its concept of the Undead mixed with some other space opera and fantasy fiction.

It's not only the remnants of a technological empire, it's a new one built on the bones of the one before it, ruled by the quasi-immortal ghosts that stuck around and under threat of entropy made manifest in the form of aliens and Lovecraftian elder things.

It is, but undistinguishable. The old gods were a spacefaring civilization that created a world-ship to run away from the heat death of the universe. Magic is just the manipulation of a quantum probability field. None of this matters to the players, who are playing a standard 5e hexcrawl.

Because mixing sci-fi and fantasy is fucking retarded and is only done by faggots who can't make up their minds about what kind of game they want to run. Having computers, cybernetics and laser rifles in the same setting as dragons, magic swords and wizards is fucking retarded.

My homebrew D&D setting is not at all home to the remnants of a crashed spaceship where an artificial intelligence seeks to become a literal god and sends out robots and cybernetically-enhanced undead to spread a literal techno-religious virus to the unsuspecting world of flesh above

What would people in this setting call things like an artificially intelligent robot? What about a starmap that has comprehensive information on a variety of habitable planets? How would they react to these things?

the vaulters are 100% not a part of my setting, I promise
>>
>>44589696

>>
>>44589696

>What would people in this setting call things like an artificially intelligent robot?

Automaton, machine men, etc.

>What about a starmap that has comprehensive information on a variety of habitable planets?

Depending on the setting they might not fully understand what it's telling them, but know that it pertains to the celestial realms above. Something cheesy, like the "Star Atlas"?

>How would they react to these things?

To robots, probably no differently than they would constructs powered by magic, or sentient constructs powered by magic.

To a catalog that details planets, probably would find it completely useless except to the occasional curious scholar.

More like I just wanted to vent what I commonly hear from some people when they see science fiction elements in a fantasy game.

>Iwasjustpretendingtoberetarded.jpg

I get different strokes for different people, but when you actually say that "sci-fi has no place in fantasy" you're kind of objectively wrong.

I actually ran a short game in that homebrew setting at my college, and one of the players got physically upset when they found out the lich they were hunting down was a cyber-lich armed with a gravity gun, despite having been exposed to magitech already and being fine with it. I guess it really matters whether something's powered by magic or actual electricity and circuits.

How does he explain a god from his space anthologies (Bakkalan the Pale child, described as as a pale child holding a black sword) showing up in the Temple of the One God in Braavos?
>>
>>44590620
References for fans of his other works. At the end of the day, these are fictional stories, so what stops them from referencing other stories? GRRM also has references to Jack Vance, Roger Zelzany, Tad Williams and Robert Jordan, among others. Doesn't mean their works are a part of his universe.
>>
>>44590696

I can't help but wonder if he initially wrote it as being a single continuity, but then after it all became "game of thrones", he had to alter course, especially since this was literally just posted like three hours ago, and not too long after he announced the delay.
>>
>>44589175

I had more or less the same thing happen, save for the "Lich" was actually a crazed transhuman scientist shipwrecked on a primitive world, and his phylactery was actually the data core housing his actual ego that he kept uploading into new bodies
>>
>>44582581
And what if my Sci-Fi setting is the apocalyptic remnants of a high fantasy setting? Hum?
Ever thought of that?

More seriously, the small issue I have with that kind of setting is that too often the fantasy part tend to fade out for the sf part.It become all about what happened ages ago. It's not a deal breaker though.
>>
Because I can't write a high fantasy setting, let alone one with a sci-fi setting woven in.

Mutants and Masterminds. PL 11. The only system crazy enough to run it.

You just KNOW Kawakami made a working horizon tabletop game just gathering dust in his home. He made an RPG called Obstacle Overture which was basically D&D with even more crazy math involved.
>>
It's gotten really common in books as of late - though admittedly it's usually more of a gritter, low fantasy setting, not really a high one. Think Prince of Thorns or The Warded Man instead of Sword of Shannara.

It just starts to feel a bit stupid and lazy - if you're going to make it so different in so many ways, why have it be descended from our world at all instead of making your own? You might a bit of surviving tech here, a bomb they could use there, but there's never going to be cars people can work but barely know how they function, or guns people are trained to use but treat as mystical items.

The setting is basically a ripoff of the Shannara series/Adventure Time, in that its set on Earth millennia after humanity's interstellar civilization collapses and magic clashes (and, rarely, co-exists) with natural science.

Extraplanar beings ripped into the Material Plane and re-introduced magic into the universe's laws of nature and "woke up" the supernatural elements that still lingered on Earth from ye olden days, leading to a clusterfuck of an apocalypse.

Thousands of years later, people shun the science of the old world, believing it cursed at best (ie the sci-fi tech that's still lying around in remote places). The magitech that is slowly emerging is based off of a form of cold fusion, which, to those few who study old world science figure out, was not possible under old world science. Cue conspiracy that the magitech is based off of a deliberately introduced flaw by the extraplanar beings that invaded the universe for some endgoal.
