>8,000 funbucks
>for a pre-built gaming table

Anybody got some custom or fancy gaming tables they want to share? I'm looking for inspiration.

Right now I'm taking of integrating some HD TV/Monitors into one because ITS THE GOD DAMNED FUTURE HRRRNG- but occulus rift will cost 500+$ per person and require real programming so fuck waiting for that. Maybe rear projection instead but the material for a clear image that close to the screen is about as expensive as using HD screens in the first place.
>>
>>44579983
What will you put on this monitor?
>>
>>44580062
Landscapes, gameboards, maps, portraits, etc.

Anything from a grid to a landscape, as needed.

Not having to print out grid maps, and just make them using convenient existing digital tools would be super convenient.

I just went the classic way:

I bought $20 6x6 sheet of weather resistant placstic sideing at home depot.

It is literally white bored material. I just cut it to the shape of a table I had, added 1'" indent for easy grids if the need arrises.

All in all it took maybe 3 hours, some patience, and I basically have a huge gaming board that can take spills like a champ.
>>
>>44579983
If you're going GAMING OF THE FUTURE but have no experience with programming/computer-engineering and have cash burn, Maybe a Microsoft Surface Hub? It's basically a 55" tablet for ~$7000. Just lay it down flat on a table and you're all set.
>>
>>44580080
It honestly sounds like a lot more effort than paying $40 for a mat. As for landscapes, players can work with small maps, and you can use a bit of weathering techniques to make them look like the actual maps from your fantasy world, which will do seventy times more for your players' immersion than a computer table ever could.

Remember that computers are death to a game of imagination, because they provide alternatives to that same imagination.
>>
>>44580103
Nah, I could make an arcade cabinet if I wanted to. I'm good.

>7,000$
I'd go the Occulus rift + Tabletop Simulator at that point.

>>44580098
Not a bad idea but the seams would drive me nuts.
>>
>>44579983
What I noticed about the table, in the order I noticed it, and my thoughts:
>World map in center
That is a bit odd. I'm not sure if it's useful to have. Was this table designed for playing Risk ?
I don't see any borders other than the different colours.
> Drawers in table.
They would hold way to much for a game of Risk. Is it for some other game ?

Also the height of the drawers and shelves round the side would make sitting at the table rather uncomfortable. Especially since the table top is well below the top of the drawers.

> Wooden bit at ankle height between table legs.
Chairs are not an option. Maybe stools, but that wooden bit would still be annoying. This is clearly a table that you're meant to stand at.

What game was this table designed for ?

seams are actually pretty unnoticable now, that pic was taken before I actually evened it out.

I had to cut it at the store to fit in my car, but it usually comes in one big sheet, no seams if thats a problem. I just cant tell you how much money I saved doing this. Even 4ft white boards at staples could run you $50+.
>>
>>44580139
This is good.>>44579983 this is shit. A tall person would need to sit away from the table, a small one would barely see inside. Manlets and ubermensches both lose. The most communist of tables, basically.
>>44580125
>What game was this table designed for ?
I'd hazard a guess and say it really was RISK, or perhaps it's a war strategy table someone refitted.
>>
>>44580125
Geek Chic. Really overpriced wooden gaming stuff.

I have no idea what it's designed for, but I don't think it comes with the world map. I love the old-timey look... but I'd rather just make it in my garage and make the equivalent of 100$ an hour for those savings if it's an 8000$ table that looks a bit too awkward for any gaming in particular.

Interesting. But I'd be rather worried about two things:
- The screen breaking and having to get a replacement screen that's a different size.
- Spills.

Since I don't play with character models I'd probably just get hold of a projector and display everything on a wall. If I need players to point at it, I'll just grab the laser pointer we are using as a cat toy.

>>44580207
> a small one would barely see inside.
While still having to sit some distance away from the table due to their legs.

Actually, look at the distance between your arms and legs while your sitting at a table. I expect the distance is way less than what it needs to be for you to sit at that table even if the bottom wooden plank wasn't there. Nobody is going to like attempting to sit at that table.

>>44580212
The table runs into an annoyance of mine. Objects that were designed with lots of focus on appearance, none on functionality.

Like the taps on bathroom sinks being too short to wash your hands under without banging into the back of the sink.
>>
>>44580302
>Interesting. But I'd be rather worried about two things:
Monitor isn't exposed: You cover the table with glass or plexiglass. One I'd seen more recently I can't seem to find and it's driving me nuts the guy actually included channeled segments in the TV mounting to catch any liquid spills. Personally: I'd cover the whole table with Plexi and use rubber sealant.

True. Man, this is Wii U-tier DESIGN GENIUS.

>glass
Fuck that noise. Literally, I don't think I'd enjoy the kind of sound dice falling onto glass EVERY THREE MINUTES.
>>
>>44579983
What wood is that table made out of ?

A solid wood, or a cheap wood made to look like something else ?

The square bits on the outside of the legs make me think that the legs are hollow to have the ankle beams go through them.
>>
It would almost be good to crosspost this shit to /diy/
>>
>>44580398
Put regular wood on top on the edges? Keep the plexi underneath for sealing purposes?

Plexi isn't the worst for noise

Hmmmmm... projectors. Project it from above. Tech like that is getting quite a bit cheaper. Alternatively, wait a couple months and use this http://www.androidauthority.com/wove-band-flexible-display-644970/ instead.

Make this into a bigger sheet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TpwilICE6s

I wanted to say that, but that leads us back to truly SHITTY materials for tables, doubly so for ones you'll be repeatedly dropping hard objects on.

Only if you're one of the fools who plays with four-ring deep galaxies and eight players. Game is not only much shorter, but much more aggressive and interesting at low playercounts (3-4) and with small galaxies, between two and three rings in size. A decent game shouldn't take longer than 6h at most.

Not STEEV, but I know the answer:

from http://www.foamorder.com/neoprene.html

3mm thick grade 1 stuff, backed in nylon. It's a lot cushier than rubber card game playmats, so if you want something closer to that maybe go with a thinner material.

Made this game table for a friend a while back, although it's only partially finished here. He wanted a topical beach landing-type board to futz around on with diorama's and such. This was my first foray into table building, so I was still extremely rough around the edges. He was happy though. Made it modular so he could carry it up to his shop more easily.

Never did see it when he was done setting it up, since some cunt killed him.
>>
>>44580212
This, nailed it.
Washingtons economy for yupee hipsters was pretty good around 2010 it's about to level out. Instead get a nice table saw, take your time and make some nice shit yourself.

Isn't it pretty annoying to write on a paper sheet that's sitting on foam? Wouldn't a thin layer of felt on wood a la poker table be much more comfortable to use? It's kinda the same end as foam but it doesn't make you puncture your character sheet

This is mine. Perspex inserts on top large enough to cover an A0 page. I've got an A0 with grid underneath and cna just draw on it with whiteboard markers. Beneath it is storage for books, laptops and 2 bones kickstarters worth of unpainted minis. Dice are stored separately in glass skulls.

Just after I got it it spent a few years just sitting around unused as my game group collapsed, gamed at other peoples houses or went online. Though I'm in a much better position now, I'm D&Ding 5/7 days this week.

On an unrelated not I've actually started painting a few minatures now that I've got a decent group going.

What's a good size or dimensions for a grid map? 16:9 seems kind of narrow.

I kind of like the idea in the OP: a raised surface in the center of the table of glasstop with television underneath hooked to the DM's laptop.

Dunno how big of a TV you'd want to buy though. A 32 inch can go for 200$ nowadays.

The other route for that kind of money is a 3D printer for dungeon terrain, or the same investment into Hirst Arts terrain molds.

I'd KILL for a 4' x 4' screen as a standard size wargaming table for X-Wing, Warhammer, etc. Top-down projection sucks, I've seen one.
