The only reason I could think of isshe didn't think the resistance could destroy the base (and would have been right if not for both Han's plan and Poe's fantastic piloting) and the risk of that was outweighed by the chance to destroy the attacking fleet that would otherwise escape even if the system the superweapon was aiming at was destroyed
