Using a die to track life should be illegal in MtG. It is unprofessional and it is far too easy for neckbeards to "cheat" by accidentally bumping the die.
Someone did this at an FNM I attended and I told him that if he did it again I would kill him with the .357 I keep in my truck. I then offered to show it to him after the match. He took me up on my offer and I showed it to him in the parking lot, after which he said he had to go, and waddled back into the store. I have not seen him at an FNM event since.

Did my statistics final on this question actually. Over a course of 2000 rolls from 4 regular Chessex d20s, 4 spindown dice included in MTG products, one Gamescience Die, and Roll20's digital dice roller, I found no significant statistical variation between any of the physical D20s; none of them were particularly biased towards one result or group of results beyond a normal standard deviation.
Roll20's dice roller, however, had significant biases towards the numbers 1, 4, and 17.
