Hey, /tg/, have you ever commissioned art of your character? Were you happy with the result? How expensive was it?
I always thought this is kind of lame, but now I grow fond of my RPG company, I grow accustomed to the idea of getting a memento for years to come.

Yes.

Yes.

Varied but $45 is the most I ever paid for a full-color pic.
Commissioned, only once, though it did turn out pretty good for the price they were asking(was the 20-30 dollar range).
Majority of character art I've gotten has either been from friends or drawfriends here on /tg/ though, and I actually tend to prefer those even from a quality perspective. We have some fine talent round these parts.
since we are on topic, can anyone recommend any artists? The ones who are rather good are either not accepting commissions or are on hiatus
Friend got my paladin of what is now a very long running campaign (still going) by weremole, I personally love it. It was like 75$ at the time and he's gone up since then. He was really good about my nitpicking too
I wish breathing2004 would take a commissions

A friend has drawn 2 characters for me, he was also the GM
Yup. I would post it on /tg/ but it containstieflingsandponies
>>44482343
that's very thoughtful of you, anon, thank you.

Weremole is great if you want something that's incredibly hammy or 80s.

Commisioned one. Was not happy. $60. Cannot get refund.

Oh god, it was almost 15 years ago. I think it might have been like, $25-30?
>>44481634
Sorry to be off topic but I just realised its been years since I saw a desu post of any kind on 4chan. Kind of weird.

Is it a tiefling knight riding on a pony as his steed?
>>44483528
She's a tiefling rogue, but basically, yes.
I got one, about $85-90 been a bit. I was, moderately happy I suppose. It was very well executed, and exactly what I asked for, but doesn't have... any vibrancy, any... presence, I guess. Like it was an excellently rendered picture of a person that looked like they were posing for a photo, idk. If its already a long running campaign, and you're invested in the character, I don't know that an artist can capture the image in your head no matter how much reference you give them.

Yes.
Yes.
$10, because it was a kid in art college who didn't know any better about prices. I at least told him (after paying) that he should definitely make sure to get the money next time before dropping off the picture.

I would normally call you a douchebag, but that's some pretty nice trickster teaching you did right there.
Yeah. Drawthreads are great for it. I got in contact with a drawfriend and had him draw a few concept art for my campaign races. One of them became my character in another game.
Drawthreads have delivered amazingly
>>44485648
true man. very true.
>>44481634
No. The only acceptable type is if an artist is a part of your group. Any others don't 'get it'. Time wasted on commissions time you could spend on improving your art skills.
>>44485648
Very very true.
Done it twice. First one was $30, and it turned out pretty good.
Second time was $25, didn't hear from the artist for fucking ages, then got offered a free upgrade to colour for the delay. Thought that was pretty cool, but then they still didn't deliver.
I did get a freeform character drawn once. Multiverse RPs attract a lot of shit, but sometimes, sometimes, the rules let you punch an edgelord so hard that he develops a secondary personality to cope with his own failures.

The only thing I ever got from a drawthread was drunken middle schooler bad. But I didnt want to seem ungrateful and maybe discourage the guy from pursuing a hobby so I just said thank you and planned on asking for another pic in 6 months.
Then the party fell apart.
>>44485648
that's such a surprise. I've never even opened one and though they mostly consist of MS doodles by boring anons.
>>44487963
It's the luck of the draw, really.

Sorry for you guys. It feels like drawthreads were jus most active back then.

>Hey, /tg/, have you ever commissioned art of your character?
Not for my tabletop characters, but I have commissioned art.
>Were you happy with the result?
Yes, but obviously you must look through the artist's portfolio before you decide to commission him or her. Either way they should provide you a sketch so that you can see what they are attempting and request changes if you feel any must be made.
>How expensive was it?
Depends on the artist in question, but you have to realize that character portrait will be a couple of hours of work at the very least and the artist is most likely not gonna accept less than minimum wage.
>>44489294
>>44489754
Ah, I see what you mean about vibrancy. Still quite good, however.
>>44489794
Oh, sure enough, I have no complaints about the art, and I was very specific about body type, clothing, pose, etc. However, I don't think I gave him room to put his own flair on it- but at the same time- having not sat through dozens of hours of gameplay, his flair may have not matched the character. Possibly just my inexperience at directing an artist.

I occasionally post the ones from the furry wars, but only when it's topical. I've been thinking about duckrolling people again, since most probably don't even remember it.
>>44481634
>Hey, /tg/, have you ever commissioned art of your character?
Yes. Mine and others from the group, all of which became npcs of the setting.
>Were you happy with the result?
Good enough to do it again. The guy was also happy, because he played rpg, likes fantasy but never got fantasy commissions.
>How expensive was it?
Can't say for sure, because the dollar exhange rate for my country's currency was different. Today would be around 80 dollars a piece.
>>44485648
This is too true.
