Well, let's start with the basics, vocabulary.
Viking is a verb, it means to adventure, often with the idea that you will bring home goods, knowledge, and maybe fame and honor.
"Hans and I are going to go viking."
Vikingr is a noun, referring to a person who is viking.
Most people don't really know about the verb usage of viking anymore, so it's generally ok to call Norse adventurers Vikings.
Vikings could be anything from merchants, to wandering poets, to pirates.
Now, the Norse are a group of Germanic peoples who lived on the Scandinavian peninsula. The vast majority of Norse peoples were farmers and fishermen.
The Viking Age was the time between the years AD 793–1066. It was marked by an increase in Norse raiders, colonists, and merchants coming out of Scandinavia.
Norse society was rather egalitarian compared to other societies during the Viking Age.

Wow, that was actually really helpful. Most people won't give me a straight answere, but I wanted to make the north a great land of gritty snowy adventure. My inspiration was conan the barbarian and skyrim, and what I could pull together from my poor understanding of vikingr folk lore and tradition.
I was half way thinking of making the souldth a much more green and fertile area inspired by the roman, italian, and Carthaginian wars. however I have yet to flesh out the world. I halfway had the idea for having song magic since we are all partial (bad) magicians. I play the flute and the drums, but we can all play the guitar. anyway. So, 14 or 15 then. And yes, Christianity eventually overtook nordic paganism. Christian "vikings" from scandanavia and normandy played a very influential role in the crusades. This is all information you could discovery for yourself on the Internet.
I suggest you watch Vallahal rising, a fictional movie set during that time period. It's moody, a little strange, but overall enjoyable and should help you get a feel for your campaign.

Read the Rood of the cross. It's a fascinating poem by Viking-era Saxons that explains Christ's struggle from a pagan perspective. It was part of the gradual assimilation of Christian and Pagan worldviews into the coherent whole that created such a strong Anglo-Saxon Christian identity.

The key is disengaging from the notion that Vikings were basically canards for modern Scandinavian fedoras to hue hue hue at the "kike on a stick" /pol/ style that they so often do today. It's a bit strange because you have to pretty much have to be semi well versed in norse mythology to "get" a lot of the scenes. The lack of dialogue leaves a lot of people wtf.
The writer even comments on how it was more of a personal artistic piece to him when he did it.
If OP wants some decent source material then he should pick up or just download the "Viking's Campaign Sourcebook" It's AD&D Second Edition but it has a totally decent plash of viking stuff in it. You can easily convert it to whatever system you're using no problem.
On a side note the vikings also got their shit pushed in loads of times when they weren't zerging into fishing villages and hamlets at 3am torches ablazin'.
