A mysterious giant sea-life washes up on the shore of a small fishing village. From hearsay apparently the people have taken to worshiping it as some kind of god. While it is very weak it's apparently still alive.

How does your party react to and approach this?
>>
>>44477354
>Can I eat it?
>I'm gonna eat it.
>I shouldn't have eaten it.
>>
>>44477354
I don't know. It's probably an aboleth or something.

We'll investigate anyway because not to would be metagaming.
>>
Fall in love with my apprentice but because I'm an autistic weirdo and she's a crazy mad scientist immortal who's injecting elder god sperm into people's brains I create a doll in her image then give it life in another plane of existence where I hold domain.

But soon come to the realization that she's nothing like the woman I fell for and proceed to ignore her for the rest of my now old tormented life as she wonders why her creator is now completely apathetic to her.
>>
>>44477354
What I never understood was, were the people in the village just fish people all along, or were they originally human?
>>
Hey now, that's no giant sea-life, that's my mom!
>>
>>44478040
They were turned into what they are by exposure to Kos' corpse and her innumerable parasites.
>>
>>44478028
Is this the part where a young upstart comes by, kills fucking -everything-, including you, and your boss, then turns everything with the doll into something straight out of a passable hentai?
>>
>>44478044
>implying you're not an orphan

>>44478064
>Kos' corpse

Then why did we have to kill her after the last boss fight?
>>
>>44477434
We Dungeon Meshi now.
>>
>>44478094

The nightmare is just a reflection of what has occurred. The Orphan and Kos you find are "real" but are still just reflections of the real Orphan and Kos who Gehrmen probably killed a long time ago at the bequest of Laurence.
>>
>>44478094
>Then why did we have to kill her after the last boss fight?

You killed Orphan, propelling it to the next stage of its life. Kos was already dead.

Death is a natural part of the life cycle for Old Ones.
>>
>>44478072
It's pretty funny how much the Hunter completely wrecks across the course of the game.

Your character basically just resets the entire setting by killing every relevant person/eldritch being.
>>
>>44478187

That's the case with every souls game really.

Chosen Undead fucking kills every important god/lord.

Slayer of Demons likewise just butchers everything in his path to power/sacrifice.

The Good Hunter's whole duty is just "find things that're big and bad and fucking murder them".

"AND everyone in Cainhurst, I have no fucking idea what's going on, it's a massacre out there."
"Is it fucking Gerhman?" Ludwig asks, peering over his hand.
"Unless they installed ramps in the temple ward I doubt it. We gotta do something!"
"Just go set up that minigun thing in oldtown, I'm sure it'll be fine."

Not even that. It's literally "Find thing and fucking murder them."

Rom wasn't aggressive, holding back the nightmare, until you smacked her.

every boss that you can do up to Rom is a horrible abomination that should have died, with the exception of Martyr Logarius because his reason for being there takes place before the game.

The thing is: Rom may have been holding back the blood moon but Micolash was still gonna do something nefarious with Yahnram and Oedon's child and the only way to get to Micolash was through Rom. There's no telling what would've happened had Micolash's schemes worked.

Logarius was an idiot. He should have pulped the tainted queen and then kept her... remains in a jar with a giant eggbeater in it. Written on the side of the jar should have been, "1 good stirring = 10 prayers." She would never come back to life, and Cainhurst would probably fall apart or something.

He waited on a chair wearing an illusion-casting crown for Kos knows how long just to make sure Annalise never left the castle. He could have just ended her then and there like Alfred did, then spend his apparent immortality keeping her dead while also still leading the Executioners. Yarnham might not have fallen had the Executioners survived (although I doubt they could have helped much in the end).

But pureeing the queen wasn't a permanent solution. Some dumb jackass would inevitably try the Altar of Despair. It was better to martyr oneself and hide the queen rather than killing her and risk her revival.

Then Logarius and his pyramid heads would go back to Cainhurst and paste her again. She doesn't seem all that strong.

I wonder if they will do more to expand upon Cainhurst and Himwhich after this.

I'm curious as to the origins of the witches that you fight as, to me, they seem out of place when everything else makes sense in context to the overall story.

DS3 is probably the last Dark Souls yes but Miyazaki is probably gonna make more Souls-like games.

>>
>>44479042

>>
>>44479042

You seem to forget thoughts can be transmitted through symbols inside people's minds.

I imagine whnen the villagers started worshipping Kos (and eating the parasites that came from her body) the thought form that became "Kos" came to them and they simply addressed her as such.
>>
>>44479077
>>44479061
I had forgotten about the runes. Even so I don't think we have full confirmation that the name is hers by nature, rather than one assigned to her by her worshippers.

In either case Micolash is not explicitly wrong, he's just off from what the fishermen called her. It could just as easily be that they heard it incorrectly while he, with his magic faraday cage, got the correct pronunciation.

It's impossible. Theoretically, nobody can even get to the Chalice Dungeons either, which is good, but nobody can stop the rituals in place by the School of Mensis either, which is worse. The Patron Old One of the Healing Church. Called Formless, he has no material presence, and doesn't even seem to have a Dream to exist in as Rom and Mergo do.

One might go so far as to say that he's basically the God of the Bloodborne setting, an entity that is literally everywhere and nowhere simultaneously.

He doesn't make an appearance because he isn't in the genus of existing.

You become a perfect fusion of Human and Great One. You didn't become retarded like Rom, and you aren't distant and ignorant of humanity like regular Great Ones. You have infinite cosmic power, but also the perspective to actually help humanity with it. If you see fit of course.
>>
who was post >>44444444
>>
>>44479760
Well, that's entire up to you. The reason so many Old Ones were able to be taken advantage of is because they had undeveloped minds or were made weak. Rom was literally without thought or understanding, blocking the Moon Presence and Amygdala and all that goofery from spilling into the waking world. Mergo was an infant, something the School of Mensis wanted to exploit to gain higher understanding. Ebrietas was 'left behind' by her fellow Great Ones and was similarly exploited by the Choir and the Healing Church. Mother Kos was found on a beach, pregnant, and had all her followers hunted down, experimented on, killed, and her child was stolen from her. In fact, the Kos Parasite looks a lot like an infant Great One itself. For all we know, the phantasms in her body might be more of her children, stolen and experimented on.

The difference with you is that you aren't stunted or weak. You know the follies and crimes of those around you, you've witnessed all the deception and lies and horror in this mad grasp for power made by Byrgenwerth and its spawn and even more than that, you've grown to rival the Great Ones in insight by consuming the umbilical cords. You could be the greatest of the Great Ones, achieving true enlightenment and a safe haven to call your own and none left to seek you. The choice of what comes next is entirely yours, good hunter.

A careful balancing act between being able to see the bigger picture while being slightly apart from it ensues. Sure, you now have a lot more power, but there is no evidence that you're more capable of cosmic hoodoo than Ebriatas and the Moon Presence, so elevating humanity and doing it in a way that doesn't fuck everything up more will probably be tricky and worthy of an epic saga.

I think Hemwick witches are people who broke away from the School of Mensis and started their own cult, because you can find the same sort of deformed old woman in Yahar'Gul.

The Witches of Hemwick give me the impression that they're the Bloodborne equivelant of an old person trying to use a computer with some success but not really understanding what the fuck they're doing. They know they need more eyes, so they just kind of stapled them on all over their bodies.

Not necessarily, they could be old hunters of Cainhurst lineage who totally lost it in a way that Maria (the other Old Hunter of Cainhurst blood) didn't.

If bloodlickers just show up at places of mass slaughter, why aren't they fucking everywhere, given blood is basically flowing like water everywhere in the game?
>>
What makes the Hunter so special? Why were they able to Hunt the Old Ones and defeat a withered Gherman the man who was the First Hunters and created them? What is the Hunter really?
>>
>>44486166
Most of the slaughter now is fresh and far from the wilderness these things seem to favor...and mostly done by the Good Hunter.
>>
>>44488346
The Hunter initially was nothing. Then they got a shit ton of blood echoes and became a badass.

The better question is what are blood echoes? I choose to believe that they're the abilities and strength of a person that "echo" in their blood. The echoing person may or may not actually be the creature you kill to get the echo, since they can get echoes as well from killing others but can't use them due to lacking a Doll.
>>
>>44488932
What then is the doll? She's no doll, that much is clear. Most indications seem to point towards her either being a Great One or at least born of one as she bleeds the same color blood as they and the aliens spawned from them do, not to mention her strange abilities and the fact that the Hunter's Dream continues even if you slay the Moon Presence.

>>
>>44489438
It could just be a style of clothing really. She was based off of someone and that person had to have gotten clothing from somewhere.
>>
>>44489094
I figured she was just another part of the Hunter's Dream, albeit a sentient part. She's clearly made in the image of Gehrman's doll which is itself made in the image of Maria. I figured it was given life by the Moon Presence as part of the Hunter's Dream it created for Gehrman.

The only sticking point is the fact that the Hunter's Dream remains even after the Moon Presence is defeated. However, there was another Great One that could have taken over maintaining the Hunter's Dream after the Moon Presence died.
>>
>>44489094
She is a doll, but she's also more than a doll.
You might say she's a doll made *for* the old ones child, with all the things that might imply.
But out of speculation she IS a product of Byrgenworth's experiments on the nature of the Old Ones, as is the whole hunters dream as can be seen from the "prototype" you encounter in the 'real' world.
>>
>>44489438
>>44489094

The doll is certainly a creation of Gehrman, modelled after Maria, so saying she's "a Great Old One" might not be entirely accurate because that would imply she got three thirds or something. It seems more like her "essence" is mostly a dream-thing which vaguely influences her presence in the waking world, through making the doll fingers move a little.

It might be better to say that she is a vessel for the Moon Presence, who was filled with its power when Gehrman accepted his role as MP's surrogate child. A construct within a construct, so to speak.

The similarities between her and the Winter Lanterns suggests this Doll might not be the only doll to have ever existed. Perhaps this is just the one that Moon Presence got right. On the other hand, the appearance of the Winter Lanterns seems like they might suffer from an over-abundance of insight - all those eyes and brain-stuff. Perhaps the Winter Lanterns are Maria, not the Doll, with Maria's quest for mad insight in Old Hunters echoing the WL's appearance. Note the swollen heads she creates and the swollen heads of the Winter Lanterns.
>>
>>44490052

>the Hunter's Dream is a consequence of Byrgenwerth

In that Byrgenwerth eventually figured out Three Third Chords, I suppose, but not intentionally. My read of it is that the Hunter's Dream is the Moon Presence's "pocket" of a wider realm, which are the other pillars you can see out there. It took its current shape when Gehrman contacted the Moon Presence and was made its surrogate child.

Oh, they know exactly what they are doing. Two random eye collectors wouldn't just be doing their own thing. They are gathering bloodshot eyeballs. A ritual component allowing access to the tomb of the gods. Gee, why would the School of Mensis need ritual components for that? Bell Maidens are Pthumerians! They apparently had their own chalice or chalices and were fetching Bell Maidens to use their chimes to summon The One Reborn.
>>
>>44478715

Acts of Good are not always wise are words that are attributed to Logarius. Perhaps he simply suddenly felt the weight of his sins and realized that he and his men had just given the castle a new coat of paint with the blood of random courtiers! Perhaps he just couldn't bear the thought of killing one more woman incapable of fighting back. Perhaps he realized that his band of merry men included psychopaths and fucking necromancers.

Besides, she is literally immortal. Who knows if she even really needs the Alter of Despair. It rewound time. Maybe she can heal herself? And wind up in a time where nobody would remember her true nature.

One theory I heard is that the entire town of Yahar'Gul was sacrificed in an attempt to bring back an Old One's dead child, and the result was the one reborn.

The theory was that the town was flooded with a special blood that was meant to convert the populace into a new body for the child, but instead transported everyone it touched to the exact same spot and telefragged each other into a horrible franken undead thing.

The reasoning for this are the statues clinging to the walls can be seen as people fleeing something in the street as well as the others which seem to be praying or cowering, which signify fear at impending death. Another part of this reasoning is that pool of blood that works a a teleporter.

That makes a lot of sense - the bodies you see ossified do seem to be clambering up against some sort of rising liquid, and it certainly explains why many of the monsters in the region are anatomical clusterfucks.

Presumably this ritual takes place when Rom dies, though, and explains the change that takes place in the area at that point? Though, what about those dude-pyres in the street?
>>
>>44490715
The young girl says that Gascoigne 'forgot' them sometimes and playing the music box helped him remember.

Poor guy was so far gone by the time you meet him that playing the music box makes his three-fourths beast mind freak out because the last human part is desperately trying to remember what it means. If you play it three times, he goes full beast because the scourge in him has had enough or his last bit of humanity was so addled the beast took over.

I feel so bad for Gascoigne. I really like him, and will rock his coat in every subsequent playthrough.

I figured she was some sort of artificial great one womb, based on the umbilical cord found near her in the waking world and one other thing. Of the dream worlds that we see two of the three, like cribs, contain child great ones. I figured why would the hunters dream be any different.

Has anyone else ever gotten the impression that the Moon Presence was Gehrman's kid with the doll or am I completely off base?
>>
>>44491180
Presumably yes. They are everyone who was still in town the first time you go through the area.

I think that once Rom dies who ever is orchestrating the ritual decides to start before preparations are complete, which leads to it's failure (not that I think they would have succeeded either way). The dude-pyre are, I believe, individuals of very high insight that those three hunters you encounter brought for the ritual.
>>

No, I always interpreted the Moon Presence as being one of the main sources of the beastly scourge (which is why it moves like a beast, why it can 'manipulate blood' with that attack that turns all your health temporary) so it predates Gehrman. I also get the idea more that MP is the parent in the relationship and Gehrman is the child.

I think Gehrman might have used an umbilical cord on the Doll in an attempt to bring her to life after he lost/distanced himself from Maria but how it would have worked on something inorganic I don't know.

I always thought blood echoes were literally the echoes of blood, the sound of blood splashing on stone and clothing, the thrum of blood through veins and arteries. The very base strength and will of life itself, and getting those makes you stronger.

>I choose to believe that they're the abilities and strength of a person that "echo" in their blood

That's exactly what they are, though. The descriptions of the coldblood items even imply it.

The doll was literally just a doll given life by the moon presence because Gehrman was lonely. Before that happened it was just his body pillow.

Thus, because she was made by the moon presence, it's no surprise that there are enemies that are similar to her appearance in the Nightmare (see >>44489438) which is also the creation of another great one.
>>
>>44491469
Look, they're cosmic space things. The only confirmed great ones are the good inkling hunter, the Moon presence, and Whatever the fuck mergo is. There's room for variation.
>>
>>44491469

Who's the great one born to a great one?

Remember, the great ones LOSE their children. That's why they pay attention to mortals, to seek out suitable surrogate babbies. Like, that's the deal with Mergo (Yharnam's baby, taken and offered up to his Wet Nurse by Micolash and the School of Mensis) and somewhat the deal with Gerhman (becomes adopted by the Moon Presence to oversee the hunt and beastly scourge).

Hell, even Ebrietas lost a kid - that's who she mourns over at the Altar of Despair, a kid she can't ressurect.

>Hell, even Ebrietas lost a kid
But I thought Ebrietas wasn't a great one? just another one of their spawn?
>>
>>44491650
Orphan of kos is a great one born to Kos, another great one.

It's actually interesting, because great ones do in fact lose their children, but in the Orphan's case, he lost his parent.
>>
>>44491660

Ebrietas, daughter of the cosmos, is described as a "left-behind Great One" if I recall. It's unclear exactly what happens to have her "fall from heaven", so to speak, but she is a Great One.
>>
>>44491683

Oh, the Orphan? The Orphan is Gehrman, dude.
>>
>>44491709
go on... and you better not be repeating some bullshit Vaati copied from reddit.
>>
>>44491692
Theres some idea that Ebrietas is the old one found in the chalice dungeons. But daughter does imply she is the offspring of another Old one. But as with the Orphan of Kos they do in fact die, at the hands of a hunter so the cycle of old ones loosing their children comes to fruition.

I was told VaatiVidya was a good place to learn about Bloodborne lore?

The only thing I recall Vaati ever saying about that was that the Orphan's cries are a modified version of Gehrman's,

You should, in fact leave the thread before everything is explained and spoiled for you.

I'm gonna call bullshit here.

>>44491945

It is a little unclear exactly who/what was found in the chalice dungeons, whether it was Ebrietas or Queen Yharnam herself. QY's model includes bloody wounds and shackles to suggest she has been imprisoned and bled, whereas Ebby seems to just hang out in a cave and be sad, periodically visited by people who can jump through a plate glass window and then take an elevator..
>>
>>44491976
You should go play Bloodborne mane

Get the fuck outta this thread, we stopped caring about spoilers ages ago.
>>
>>44491975
Vaati is stuck up and pounds his own opinion as fact, or his fans do it for him.
There are lots of things that have no answer in BB, but Gehrman being a Great One has no standing or basis besides >>44492020

If you have no PS4, watch Slowbeef's run. Him and Diabetus make a great tag team.

Gehrman also sleeps better when you kill the Orphan, because he's no longer trapped in the Fishing Village dream. He's punished for his sin of killing Kos, who was alive when she washed up on the shore and killed when the Hunters raided (according to the strategy guide).

They also fight similarly, using a curved weapon in a fast and highly aggressive manner involving lots of leaps and bounds.

Orphan is what Gerhman would "really" look like if we had eyes to see, a surrogate infant to an inhuman beast more Kin than man.

I always assumed the Queen was used as a sacrifice to birth an old one. Or if she was willing they took the child from her and thats why she is shackled. It just seems like they either took the baby or she miscarried, but I doubt shes one of the Great ones.
I could be entirely mistaken though and misremembering stuff its 2016 suddenly and I'm very tired.
>>
>>44492142
Wait what if Gehrman is the father? And he fucked Kos. Judging by the tits >>44478243 you can't blame him.
>>
Just an offhand question for contemplation, but..

Ebrietas was called the "daughter of the cosmos". We find out later, as it was mentioned in this thread, that Micolash had a kind of revelation in "Kos, or, some say Kosm?" where Kos' name was meant to be Cosmos.

Not sure if it's just a thematical linking, but the connection intrigued me. Maybe Ebrietas was the daughter of Kos, herself?
