How did the kings end up next to each other?
>>
>>44468313
It's from an anime called Code Geass. The main character put it there as a meta symbolism thing.
"If you take my king, you are showing how weak you are that you must assert dominance at every opportunity. If you move away, you are admitting that I am in-fact better than you."
Or something like that.
>>
>>44468313
A: The writers for Geass don't understand Chess at all
B: It's not real Chess and is some other game made up entirely to be plot convenient
Considering how wanky Code Geass gets, it probably started as A and moved into B, but who knows.

I'm pretty sure nobody said checkmate in the dub, though I'm not certain. Anyway, I've always handwaved it with the rules of chess having evolved differently in the world of Code Geass since there are so many other historical differences there too.

>Soviet comedy
>game of chess is included as background element in one scene
>even though the board is barely shown and there is no attention to it, the position of figures is actually legit, the whole match can be deduced from it and it is clear that one character set a trap for his inexperienced opponent
>Japanese serious anime
>Game of chess is included as metaphor
>board is in focus
>"HURRU DURRU I TAKU U KINGU WITH MY KINGU"
Japan, everyone
>>
>>44475901
I seriously think the only reason they made it Chess instead of Go or Shogi was so they could make his costume a stylized black king and make metaphors about the other guy being the white king.
>>
>>44466719
I did this.
>>
>>44475901
Can you name the soviet comedy? You've caught my interest.
>>
>>44475997
No they made it Chess cause it takes place in a fictional world where America never won the Revolution and now Roman Britain runs everything and there's giant robots.
>>
>>44476173
Some other shit happened, actually, since Britannia and Britain are not the same country, or even allies. Their capital is somewhere in Nevada or California.
The most likely scenario is that something like the French revolution happened in Britain and the royalists fled to the colonies, which probably means that the American Revolution never happened at all because the government was right there and not neglecting the suddenly very important colonists.
They really don't give enough backstory considering the insane amount of differences.
>>
>>44476306
The only difference that really matters is that a natural room temperature superconductor was found that enable viable mech construction. Everything else is just so much set dressing.
>>
>>44475901
chess is a game soviets play.

japanese don't normally play chess, its not a game native to the region.

its kind of like how in FMA, Ed mentions how the only way he can tolerate milk is as an ingredient in beef stew, and how ingenious it was for someone to think of that, putting milk into vegetable soup to make stew.

The problem being that I have never once seen a recipe for beef stew that contains milk. But the author doesn't know that, because european beef stew is not a dish he's ever actually had, much less eaten.

Japan is crazy insular, and don't seem to actually care about researching the countries they're trying to be fakes of.

"Gaijin drink way more milk than us. stew has something in it other than broth. Must be milk!"

"Chess is played with capturing pieces. The game ends when you take the king, so obviously the king is the player expy. So 'drive my tank closer I wanna hit him with my sword!'"

Get sleep, fail to not break game
>>
>>44476685
There's also the part where lactose intolerance is basically a non-European thing. The vast, vaaast majority of people who are lactose intolerant are Asian or African. FMA is supposed to be in a not!Europe country, which should mean that most everyone can drink milk in any form with no issues.

proof on that milk stew line by the way. it actually happened.
>>
>>44476827
which is /why/ gaijin drink way more milk than [them]"

but fails to properly explain why one would think stew contains milk, other than total lack of research and grand assumptions based on incomplete information and extrapolating from preconceptions.
>>
>>44477629

Uh, that's not a "japanese don't understand culture reference issue.

The japanese actually do put milk in stew. I'm sure she's eaten lots of stew with milk in it.
>>
>>44477709
so its a "we put milk in our stew, surely europe does too. I mean, how else would you ever make stew? Clearly japanese way is the only way" thing.

Still a cultural reference thing.
>>
>>44477681
>but fails to properly explain why one would think ... other than total lack of research and grand assumptions based on incomplete information and extrapolating from preconceptions.

so... you just described yourself?

The japanese are super into this stuff. No, I don't know why.

It's a fantasy setting, what the fuck does europe have to do with it? The discussion is about a character trait
>>
>>44477840
no it wasn't, it was about why Code Geass has bad chess.
Which I explained as being due to the japanese being insular and prone to no research (even worse than USA), often instead trying to rely on the tiny bits they do know, stereotypes, and assumptions of global homogeny to fill in the gaps.
After which I brought up the supporting example of FMA acting like milk stew was a regular thing in an alternate universe of 1930s europe where alchemy happens to exist.
>>
>>44478049
But FMA isn't set in Europe. And the author of Silver Spoon plainly does do research.

>>44478049
What's more interesting is that Japanese put more effort into their portrayals of Russia than Americans do. Which is weird since they don't like Russia to begin with because of "muh islands"
>>
>>44468383

But that's not a legal move.

You can't put your king in a position where it will be taken, if you have no other legal moves but you're not in Check, it's a stalemate. A draw.

http://www.expert-chess-strategies.com/chess-stalemate.html
>>
>>44480930
That's the fucking point. >>44468383 is close but not quite correct. The question is: is his opponent going the type to get pissy about rules or is he the type to ruthlessly exploit an opportunity? That's why the protag is confused/worried when he opts to move an unrelated piece instead; it shows the protag doesn't know his opponent as well as he thought he did and that he failed to take the entire battlefield into account, which can be pretty ego crushing where your entire personality is built around TACTICAL GENIUS HURR. He got his own trick flipped bak on him.
