Any name can have a killer reputation - if you build that reputation. Trying to make your character a badass by giving them a tough name is a bit like trying to make your novel a success by giving it a cool title. It doesn't hurt - but it's not the most important thing.

That may be true but this is a name that would stick with a character for a long period of time (hopefully) it's almost like naming a child.
Normally I'd come up with something over the course of a campaign but I was put on the spot with this one so I'd like something mean that I could roleplay with. So far I'm thinking calico "grimfang" jack, who's crew simply call him cap'n Tom .
