You either have trouble understanding spoken language or your GM wasn't clear enough on the style and narrative conventions of the game.

If you try to set the whole tone of the campaign in the opening narration it can get long, but you should have done that when you invited people to the campaign.

If the place is important it should have been clear by the time you started the game.

>the locals
Unimportant supporting characters are part of the narrative conventions r can be inferred from the place itself.

>current timeframe
You mean like decade/century/etc.? because that should have already been talked about when you offered to run the game.

Opening narration to a noir style campaign:
>You meet late at night in your favorite bar for a much-needed drink. After a few hours of small-talk you spot a blonde woman - [insert PC's name here]'s old flame - walking to your table and saying: 'Hello boys, would you mind helping a poor lady out?'

For a Harry Potter Style fantasy-school adventure
>The top of the train wagon glistens in the morning sun as you and your fellow students prepare to embark on your way to not!Hogwarts. You move very slowly in the crowd and you all have been pushed, trampled and cursed at many times when [player character] feels a foreign hand shifting through his pockets.

For fuck's sake people, the setting should be introduced to the players BEFORE you sit down to play. Like when you ask them:
>Hey, I have an awesome idea for a campaign. It's about [spolier-free plot] set in [setting explanation]. It'll take inspiration from [two or three movies/books which are relevant]. Wanna join?
If you introduce your setting when the players are already there wanting to play you fucked up. No wonder people who came to play interrupt you.

>What if it's not important? What if it's a bumblefuck farming town? I need that description.
No, if it's not important you don't need a description. As simple as that.

>Tell me the current mood and status of the people's well being from the description "small town that's unimportant"
Infer it from the scene, you autist. In the noir example it's a late night bar, so they're drunk and/or sad. In the Harry Potter example the kids are excited because it's fucking not!Hogwarts, the parents are proud and the thief is afraid because someone just caught him pickpocketing.

>Is it night/day, winter, summer, rain season, holiday, church day? No one tells you the specifics of the first session when discussing the campaign.
I think literally all examples showed that telling the night/day takes like two fucking words. The others are not really important, so why are you talking about them? Also a lot can be implied by the scene. like in the second example you can infer that it's autumn because school, and a weekday because you don't leave for collage on a weekend. In the other example it's not important like in 99% of the other cases.
>>
>>44448454
Your entire argument stems from the belief that two sentences are adequate to start the game. Since you already admitted that it is not a good descriptor it's obvious you needed more to the opening narration.

>Also the current place I am at is always important because I am there.
In the real world, yes. In an RPG, no. Most of the time it's just clatter. For example it doesn't matter for an unemployed detective what day it is, because it's not like he's working. And when he actually goes and starts to work on the case it's perfectly fine for the player to get that information then, because that's when it starts being important. There's no need for it to be in the opening narration.

>Being drunk describes nothing but the chemical state
Technically so does 'happy' or adjective referring to a mood. Also at the example it's a late-night bar which is frequented by noir types, I'm pretty sure everyone is either crying drunk or passed out.

http://theangrygm.com/how-to-talk-to-players-the-art-of-narration/

I often disagree with the guy, but he makes some good points here. Look at the cemetery example.

The only problem is if you're playing in a game where you really need the specifics, but that's what questions are for. As long as nobody gets pissed off. "You didn't say there WEREN'T any mausoleums in the cemetery!"

But 90% of the time, the players will make stuff up in their imaginations, you can roll with that or correct them without them ever mentioning it.

Cemetary example showed me the time and the location. Still has no relevance to whatever I am doing there. Remember that we are talking about opening of a new game. A sentence about being in a cemetery gives no indication whether I stay or leave because there is nothing else but a vague description.
Players will only imagine something if there's actually anything to imagine.

>I NEED to know if it's rye or sourdough!
These things aren't mutually exclusive. In fact, the rye is traditionally made using sourdough.
Rye has a much weaker gluten and can't maintain its structure unless the dough is either acidified, or significant amounts of wheat flour are added.
>>
>>44450787
That's true, but I like >>44447421's example.

What would be cool is if it started in media res, and he gave more information as the game went on, rather than in one big block of exposition.

>"I attack one of the ninjas! 17!"
>"Great, the ninja looks close to death as you hit him for 5 damage! A hundred years ago, the town of Scrufflebutt was afflicted by a plague that turned everyone into evil ninjas. John, your turn."

And keep going on like that.

I know some people like to really work their characters around the setting and events, which is fine, but I think this would be interesting too. Especially if a lot of it is unknown or completely independent of the characters (for now). Hell, you could even ask after the in medias res part, "Okay James, what are you doing in Scrufflebutt?" since now they have a feel for the place, its history, and its problems.

>>
>>44447800
Nope, the setting should be explained as they go, given to the players as if they already knew it, but explained to the player who runs a foreign character. That way you can subtly tell the entire group about the world without the issue of "Duh, I should already know that" and "Why don't I already know that".

For Dungeon World, here you go.

Chapter 13, under the "Principles" heading, particularly page 162 with the section "Draw maps, leave blanks", and page 164 with the section "Ask questions and use the answers".

Chapter 14, "First Session", explains how to use these principles and set up the first session. It recommends coming up with ideas and some maps, but also says this:

>The one thing you absolutely can’t bring to the table is a planned storyline or plot. You don’t know the heroes or the world before you sit down to play so planning anything concrete is just going to frustrate you. It also conflicts with your agenda: play to find out what happens.

It goes on to explain how you should be asking the players questions about the world and using the answers. You ask them what the king or town is like, you don't have a binder full of history.

Later it says this, for the start of the session:

>Start the session with a group of player characters (maybe all of them) in a tense situation. Use anything that demands action: outside the entrance to a dungeon, ambushed in a fetid swamp, peeking through the crack in a door at the orc guards, or being sentenced before King Levus. Ask questions right away—“who is leading the ambush against you?” or “what did you do to make King Levus so mad?” If the situation stems directly from the characters and your questions, all the better.

>Players who always ask "How is he looking?" while in combat.

Fucking irks me so bad. Like if he is dead I'll tell you and if you are not dealing damage or there is an important mechanic that is happening I'll drop hints about it, if I say nothing and record your damage it is safe to say you are hurting it.

What's worse is when I get tired of it and offer them "You know, how about this, I'll just tell you guys the HP values after every attack so you know how he is so you don't keep asking how he is after every round." And then they say "No, that's dumb, that's meta gaming I don't want that!"

Like how am I supposed to respond to "How is he looking?" you smack him around like a pinata, throw shit loads of spells at them, and deal damage. You know how much damage you deal, he is clearly hurt, I can't provide any information that isn't meta gaming if I say "he looks like he is struggling to live" when he has 10 HP left you faggots are going to meta game anyways say "Okay, I'll attack him now and you guys deal with the other things!"
>>
>>44458432
This be bait my son.png
>>
>>44458924
Call it bait if you want, but I don't like responding every fucking turn with "Oh hes more hurt than he was before." "Oh now hes close to death!"

It's fucking tedious.
>>
>>44458965
You could tell your players that they should stop asking that every turn.
>>
>>44459193
Fuck anon! It's like I never thought about doing that at all! You are a genius!

They are adamant that they should know how hurt someone is by ball park methods and how it isn't fair otherwise. It's like arguing with idiots who want it THEIR way, and don't realize what a DM is. While I told them "You guys can do anything you want." They take it as "We are entitled to ball park guestimates of the enemy's health value! But we don't want to meta game!". Then when they do something stupid like slicing their hand open to draw some blood rather than pricking a finger, they lose their shit that they take damage for it even if it is like 2 damage.

This group I'm running is just the worst, actually two of them aren't too bad, it's just the third one who likes pushing his way into things and argues so he doesn't deal with shit that he thinks is bullshit.

But I digress, they want to meta game but also don't want to meta game, and it's annoying and if I had my way, they would know when they drop dead and that would be the end of it. And if I try to argue that they would say "yeah well, in D&D adventure leagues the DM guy there tells us!". They were conditioned poorly to what RPGs are it feels like.
>>
>>44458965
>describing combat is tedious
Maybe tabletop games aren't for you.
>>
>>44459432
Nope, I didn't say describing combat is tedious. I describe combat, describing the physical appearance and how well someone is looking every time an attack goes through is tedious just so in the end my players can meta game anyways because that's what they do.

What I said
>but I don't like responding every fucking turn with "Oh hes more hurt than he was before."
>It's fucking tedious.
What you are telling me I said.
>describing combat is tedious

Perhaps reading isn't for you.

I don't like describing the health value of the players opponents on every attack. The players know how hard their attacks can hit, they know how devastating or how weak their attacks are against the opponent. They are rolling the dice for fucks sake, the point of a fight is that you don't know how long someone has on their feet or how close they are to death. You shouldn't plan on "Well he looks almost dead, player 1 finish him off while player 3 and I will focus on the other guys!"

The only way you know for sure when you defeat an enemy is when they drop to the ground and die that is how it should be.

>adding half of a sentence like "...he looks hurt" or "...he's not bothered by your attack" is too much of a pain in the ass when describing an attack.

Also saying "he looks more hurt" every time is fucking shit. In most systems stamina and fatigue are not separated from physical injury so I usually don't describe the enemies even slowing down until they've lost half of their HP (or whatever the system is calling it), at which point I inform the players that it doesn't look like the enemy can take this much damage again. Also when the is one hit away from death the players are notified, as in "he doesn't look like he can take another hit like that".

He has no immersion. The DM is introducing a wise, elderly knight character we came to meet, and he doesn't get through the first sentence of his Don Quixote guy voice before this weenie glances up from his fucking phone to ask a mechanical question, even though combat ended like 5 minutes ago. holy fuck this is the single most infuriating thing I've ever had to deal with. in my irl group this is such a huge problem. people CONSTANTLY fucking get off topic. every ten minutes someone makes a lolsofunny reference INGAME to some fucking dumb reference or meme and then everyone else just KEEPS TALKING ABOUT IT. this can take anywhere from two to five minutes. constantly. every fucking session.

other than that everyone is really great but holy fuck no more reference humor. i don't care about any of it just play the fucking game you drove here to play. don't complain after the game that not a lot got done when half the game you were the one who had to try and tell a fucking irrelevant five minute story every half an hour.

It is enough when you remark extreme changes like a heavy blow knocked the air out of his chest and blood starts dripping, or when the players asks.
