Cultural differences, western myths and legends, at least from what I've personally read, cast demons almost purely as monstrous antagonists while eastern cultures have them more as just magic people that are sometimes assholes and sometimes just animals

Actually, calling them "demons" is really more of a lazy translation kind of deal than anything. They've got little in common with what Westerners would call "demons", it's just that there's no English way of differentiating between the different types otherwise (although they do tend to translate "Bakemono" as "goblin").
