Favorite thing about the set. I fucking love this mechanic. It's amazingly flavorful and creative and it does something new and different.

We totally haven't seen a plethora of bland ass mechanics to put +1/+1 counters on things done so elegantly and simplistically until now. All those blocks and mechanics beforehand? Practice, a lead up to the one and true +1/+1 counter keyword to end them all. Or generate 3000 more over the next 4 blocks.
>>
>>44443376
Great. If there's one thing I've always said it's that the only way wonderful flavor and setting of Innistrad could be better is if it had stupid generic tentacle monsters hogging the spotlight.

>80%+ of the cards in the set are made for Limited
If no one else, the designers give a shit.
>>
>>44444703
Limited is one of the most popular formats. Especially with how cancerous standard and modern are.
>>
>>44443241
This one is really strong. Four mana to draw a card is something that doesn't appear on lands for a reason.
The hand restriction is actually quite the bottleneck, though. I think a lot of decks are gonna try running two or three of these at first and then cut back to probably just one pretty quickly.

I could see ramp running three or maybe a full four just because of how easy it is to empty your hand for that deck, and how important it is to draw to more wincons if they remove one of your fatties.
>>
>>44445009

I gotta say, I have my issues with draft and the whole premise behind designing sets around draft (paying $10 for 44 worthless, unimaginably shitty cards and a $1 rare feels like a rip-off)

And I was as disappointed with the bfz spoilers as anybody

But I gotta say that I had a lot of fun drafting bfz, the format worked for me, it felt balanced, it felt like I had a lot options in my card pool
>>
>>44445070
Except ramp decks rarely run out of cards in hand, due to having lands and threats in hand, and by the time you get to topdeck mode either you're losing or you're winning, making the card useless.
>>
>>44444279
And now you can run all of them.
>>
>>44445104
>But I gotta say that I had a lot of fun drafting bfz, the format worked for me, it felt balanced, it felt like I had a lot options in my card pool

>Play Blue and Ignore Green: The Format

You're a funny guy, anon.
>>
>>44445172
Maybe you shouldnt take every article on the internet 100% serious. Yes, green is a lot weaker than any other color, but if you would have actually played BfZ limited you would know that it doesn't matter that much as every article make it out to be. On pro level, maybe. On FNM level, no, we had a lot of decks going top 3 with green in them
>>
>>44445120
>lands and threats in hand
Except half your lands in a ramp deck are actually ramp spells that you aren't restricted to playing only one of per turn. And one of ramp's biggest weaknesses is having to keep single-threat hands that you can't mulligan, and getting your threat dealt with and having no gas for the rest of the match.
>>
>>44445172

To be fair I don't remember a lot of saucy green cards in my pool, and I got owned by this guy playing mostly blue

But my mardu deck won some games so my memory is of a more balanced format than what it actually was
>>
>>44445219
That you're surrounded by bad players with shit card assessment doesn't mean the format is balanced. BFZ is an imbalanced as hell format; the only reason to ever draft green is that you're 100% sure you're the only green player in the whole table so you'll get all the good green cards and even then you're not even guaranteed to win anything.

Green is less shit in sealed, though, but it's never been particularly a shining example there, either.
>>
>>44443237
It'll probably just be used to grow hangarbacks...

But yeah, this probably would have snapped standard in two if it said "each." At the very least, it would make Hangarback's tokens 2/2s, without even getting into scions and stuff...

That said, would it really have killed them to make it enter untapped?
>>

>>
>>44445221
My point is that I almost never run out of cards in my hand even going into turn 7 on. Since November I've run ramp at FNM, and of all the games I played I ran out of cards maybe once.

This card isn't for a ramp deck.
>>
>>44445596
not that anon, and I just started magic a month ago. How late can you switch colors and still be viable? Like if you're halfway through the second pack and you realize no one is taking good white cards would it be viable?
>>
>>44445684
Depends on how good your already drafted cards are, and the reason to change.
>>
>>44445792
Well, the problem I usually find myself in is I have a decent bomb and good one or two drops but all of the good 3-4 drops never make it around, so I usually just lose to red aggro stuff or blue fliers.
>>
>>44445684
Halfway through pack 2 and wanting to pick up a new color? It depends on a couple of things first. How many colors are you already? If you've only been drafting 1 color, the answer is yes (probably). If you're already drafting 3 or 4 colors, the answer is stop that. If you're on 2 colors, it gets a little gray. You have to consider that cards you've already drafted, mana fixing, whether or not you are adding white or replacing a previous color, and how likely it is that someone else has picked up on this as well. Plus other stuff.
>>
>>44445684
One and half a pack of the best white cards is usually worth it.
>>
>>44445823
Sounds like you don't pick removal high enough.
>>
>>44445860
Usually by that point i'm 2 colors so picking up white would be a matter of replacing one of them.

>>44445860
that makes sense. The one time i drafted and had a couple touch of the voids and bone splinters went better than the other times. Do you usually pick removal after you've decided on a color or do you just spend the first pack picking the best stuff regardless of color?
>>
>>44445823
Then it's not a color change problem, it's your priority. You should always make sure you have your curve. Lack of low drop is bad, but having too many of them is equally bad.

If you're new, i always recommend you to look for lsv / luis scott vargas draft videos. The guy is a pro player who often records mtgo drafts. Imo his videos are good for people who are still learning because he'll often explains his choice of drafts and plays.
>>
>>44445913
I only pick gamewinning bombs over good removal. The first 5 picks I just draft the best card of the pack, then I get some vague sense of what colours I should be playing.
>>
>>44442708
You can probably blame Affinity's existence for this ETB tapped
>>
>>44445913
It's always important to remember BREAD for drafting priority:

B- Bombs: Anything that can possibly have a major affect on the game, good examples are the Planeswalkers, Master of the Wild Hunt, Bogardan Hellkite, etc

R- Removal: Anything that effectively gets rid of creatures, Doom Blade, Unsummon, Essence Scatter, Rod of Ruin, etc

E- Efficient spells, or Evasion: Creatures with evasive abilities (flying, unblockable, etc) or spells like Giant Growth, Righteousness, Might of Oaks.

A- Aggro: Aggressive creatures, quick and mana friendly, Centaur Courser, Warpath Ghoul, Mold Adder, Elite Vanguard, Silvercoat Lion

D- Dregs: The rest, cards that don’t usually get picked.

It's worth noting that picking bombs out of color is dangerous if you don't see the other cards to support going into that color. Also, there is a thing as too much removal. Remember that most games will boil down to creatures turning sideways, and you need to keep room for them.
>>
>>44443185
I would disagree with you on one point, I think the effect is far more relevant on colorless creatures than it is on green creatures.

Though green creatures are on average better, colorless creatures are more liable to come down in a big aggressive wad and also care about +1/+1 counters in more relevant ways.

I imagine Ruins was so heavily nerfed because they were scared of affinity.
>>
>>44443619
I would throw 1 in MUD over a vesuva or city of traitors and replace coercive portal with 2-3 endbringer
>>
>>44443241

>>44442912

>>
>>44446531
we should just yugioh and have the most powerful decks in vintage be whatever got printed last month
>>
>>44445644
I could see the card being very awkward if you already have the bomb in hand but are looking for the ramp.

Still, throwing one or two in a ramp deck seems fairly free.
>>
>>44441644
So the Gatewatch will now be Magic's Avengers?
>>
why do people who complain about wizards playing it safe even still play magic? They've been playing it ridiculously safe since RTR. This is not new, it's clearly their current MO. If you don't like it you should probably quit now.
>>
>>44446621
You need to run other colorless lands to turn it on
>>
>>44446531
I think this block got hit with it extra hard because they changed to two-set blocks in the middle of it. They're playing it safe because they don't want another Jitte. I'd argue they're playing it too safe, especially when meme rhino and hangarback are still a thing, but at least I can understand their logic somewhat.

>>44444358
Yeah, I think part of their new creative push is keeping the artists more strictly in line with a "house style" but the eldrazi art has been pretty bad so far. Kozilek's brood is at least coming out more interesting than Ulamog's, and I'm actually really happy with >>44442985

>>
>>44446782
Because it's the official magic is ded season.
>>
Are there fullsize arts for the new expeditions out yet?
>>
>>44446805
Can be rectified by using painlands, and if you're talking standard, eldrazi ramp already ran Shrine and Sanctum.
>>
>>44446782
Magic isn't just standard. People who play the eternal formats would like it if standard cards did interesting things and took risks, but they don't need it to.

Also, I don't think Wizards will keep playing it safe forever, it's easier to fuck things up super hard if you only play it safe.
>>
>>44446894
If you start running painlands, you are making your deck weaker to maybe be able to get value out of some of your other lands

Spoilers mean we have to launch into hysterics about Wizards playing it too safe or dumbing everything down, even though the game is still actually pretty fun and we all play it anyways.

I'd agree that everything past Innistrad has been kinda meh, but compared to a lot of card games, the hills and valleys are pretty shallow.
>>
I would like wizards to make a format were certain sets are included and excluded, but not based on chronological order of release. Like a Ravnica Format that only allows cards from ravnica and RTR block.
but this is too kitchen table magic to be mainstream right.
>>
>>44446997
>even though the game is still actually pretty fun and we all play it anyways.
What do people playing the game have to do with new sets? Where does this belief that people who still play the game approve of recent sets just because they still take part in the game come from? I keep seeing this shit.

So a legacy player who hasn't played a new card in his deck after RTR can't call the last 3 sets toothless, boring piles of poop JUST because he still enjoys some old part of the game?
>>
>>44446997

I think that BFZ just plain sucks over everything else.
>>

It's gotten so bad in my area my lgs just stopped holding standard and limited altogether it's 100% modern FNM now.

>>
>>44446966
I can't say I know the deck particularly well, but I'm looking at Jim Davis' players championship winning decklist and it already has 9 colorless lands and a one off plains, which seems to be there only to enable 2x Radiant Flames and 2x Hallowed Moonlight in the sideboard.

In the main deck it seems like seagate wreckage would be strictly better than that plains, and you're getting Kozilek's Return to replace those sideboard slots.

Though I think seagate wreckage is a card you would have to actually play with in order to see how good it is.

They absolutely will keep playing it safe. And no, it's not easier to fuck up that way, that's what 'playing it safe' means. Urza, Affinity, and Cawblade - none of these were a result of playing it safe.

As far as the 'but muh legacy" argument, you already know wizards gives zero fucks about you. They want Legacy to die and be replaced with Modern. Call new blocks what you want, it'll have no effect.

>>44448452
While I suppose a randomly rotating ban list does accomplish that, it's certainly not my idea of a good time.
>>
>>44447208

If you're not the majority it means you weren't even the type of person they were talking about, you basically just burst into a discussion in which your existence is off-topic and tried to make it about you. It isn't about you, nobody cares about you. It's about the morons that buy into every new set and enjoy them while screaming that Magic is dead and being unable to see the dissonance between those two things. If you'd like to talk about that feel free but I have no idea why you're laying into that guy essentially because they weren't accounting for your personal experiences and attitudes as though that were in any way relevant to anything.

If you don't drive an ice cream truck then don't rush to defend yourself when someone criticizes ice cream truck drivers, it just reveals that you're a self-absorbed prick unable to comprehend conversations in which you aren't the primary topic.

Except that the game is stale, every game basically comes down to who can go off first unless you deliberately decide to play at a lower power level. OTK: The Game gets pretty boring after an afternoon, let alone the lifespan of a major CCG. Mid-era yugimon was a pretty decent game but they have absolutely not succeeded in keeping it that way.

I get the impression that Gideon is very much a Half-Godling with the father being Heliod.

he very much feels like a Hercules character, and they specifically said they "left Hercules out of Theros" which is fitting as Gideon left and never came back.
>>

To be fair, it's essentially the Doom Blade of the next year

It fucks with essentially anything that's basic goal of winning partially involves hitting someone, and it's conditions only go that far. As long as it's not Indestructible, it's pretty much the best removal you can get for a mere 2 mana.

>Super-amazing and equally expensive card came out that you want? Just wait a bit and it will be mass reprinted.
Anon, the whole problem with Yu-Gi-Oh's business model is that by the time that mass reprinting happens, they've already printed a new card/archetype that blows the one you liked out of the water. That's the whole point: the latest rares dominate, so people Crack packs looking for them. Once the rush is petering out, they reprint it in bulk to destroy it's aftermarket presence and replace it with something more powerful that fills the gap. The old card is now no longer valuable for mechanical dominance nor scarcity, so it becomes another bit of junk-binder fodder. Repeat ad infinium.

You will never, ever have a competitive deck with your buying strategy.
>>

It's basically a much worse Valorous Stance.

Same cost, but it can't protect your creatures, can't kill defensive/utility creatures, and can only kill during your opponent's combat step. Anything with less than 4 toughness is probably something that can easily be handled by white's creatures, so the restriction on Stance doesn't even really matter.

What's spooky about this card is the mana fixing options we're going to be getting in Oath.

I could literally just drop the colorless rock, get myself a free white mana from it's ETB effect, and cast Call to get myself a spicy planeswalker of literally any other color.
