The issue is not that it's an acronym. Acronyms are fine. PC? Player Character. GM? Game Master. Short, useful, with a clear line of reason.
BBEG? Big, Bad, Evil Guy? Aside from sounding childish, it doesn't actually tell you what it's supposed to mean until it is further explained, and you can find a wide variety of examples for definitions of what exactly a BBEG is, ranging from the final boss, the power beyond the final boss, the primary villain of an arc, the boss of a dungeon, the strongest enemy in a group, and so on and so forth, to a degree where you might as well just use Villain or Boss (with the latter being the same amount of characters as BBEG). Some people actually don't even know what BBEG stands for, with some examples including "Big Bad End Game."
What we've got is something senselessly convoluted, an exaggeratedly long term used when a four letter word suffices, that is then shortened down to a four letter acronym to add another layer of convolution.

When you use the term BBEG people know you're talking about the particular villain that the campaign is based around you attempting to stop, whereas the term villain could be used to describe literally any antagonist you face on your journey.
