It would be very painful, but it would stop a glancing blow from cutting your face or shrapnel, and could likely stop a dirk going up your nose if someone got it under your helmet.
It would also keep your face comfy in cold weather and stop your nose from freezing off or sticking to a cold metal helm.

Basically, the reason why fetishes strangely both accepted and ostracized in Japan is because during the feudal era, they didn't have any sort of religious force that said 'eh, no porn because it causes lust' so there's a lot of older art and manuscripts that openly displayed sex. This basically allowed them to be freer in terms of fantasies culturally-wise in the future. However, once they began to modernize in the 1800s, the Japanese attempted to appear more Western by censoring and even outright banning pornography. Now days, it's kind of a weird, contradictory mess of 'it's wrong to like porn' and 'eh, fuck it' where porn is both heavily censored there but you're more likely to find the porn you're looking for if you've got a weird fetish.

Pic related is a print by Hokusai. The very same guy who made the insanely famous Wave and Mt. Fuji image, probably the most famous Japanese woodprint of all time. Made around 1810.
It's not unreasonable to assume Hokusai himself was drawing on a tradition even older.
