One thing to note about "elves" in Celtic/Irish folklore, they fit the bill of 'ancestral race' - the fey of Ireland are the remnants of the Tuatha de Danaan, the godlike inhabitants of the world that were driven underground by the invading Milesians (modern humans). There's a little bit more to it than that, though you're not wrong.
The idea of a lost or dying golden age is everywhere in mythology and has been since the dawn of recorded history. The first four ages of man in Greek mythology, the Garden of Eden in Christianity, the 50s in your grandparent's memories, etc. Tolkien's elves are just another manifestation of this, a last lingering remnant of a once glorious past. Dying elves can represent the same thing in other settings. In 40k, for example, both elves and humans are the slowly dying embers of great empires now doomed to be consumed by demons and fungus and insects and robots and Games Workshop's business practices.
But yes, a lot of people misinterpret elves dying out as some sign that humans are great, when it's actually that the past is great. Humans are the future, but the future is shit.

Ireland's history and mythology are both a series of one people invading and conquering the last settlers.

They escaped Greece and return to Ireland, where they plow the fields and establish the Kingships of the land, dividing it into 5 parts (North,West, East, South and Center).
The Fir Bolg were driven out by the next wave of conquerors, known as the Tuatha de Danaan (people of the Goddess Dana), or simply the Tuatha de. Incidentally, the burning of their invading ships by the Tuathan king Nuada may have inspired the Burning of the Ships by Feanor in Lord of the Rings. Both burnt their ships so that none among them could try to return to their old land, a promise to conquer Ireland and Arda respectively.
The Tuatha were eventually defeated in their own time by the next wave of conquerors, the Milesians, who forced them beneath Ireland where they eventually became the Aos Si.
After this, the Milesians were superseded by the Celts, who were superseded by the Vikings, and then the Normans, and finally the British.
No wonder the chief source of Irish mythology and pre-history is called the Book of Invasions.

I always went with the "Long-lived races have less children and that strategy is fucking them over when faced with other faster-breeding races." so they keep to themselves and thrive where others can't.
A more biological reason instead of a more metaphoric one.
Being able to breed like rabbits while, at the same time, being able to live a few centuries leaves you with a population you can't support in the long, or even the short run.
