This was a game full of wasted potential. The game was decent, but it could have been improved on with alternate game modes. Too bad WizKids died and it has gone silent. Any thoughts on the game?

I loved collecting all the ships.
Only got to play the game a couple of times, using a way too small pool of ships.
Longships seemed broken though.
>>
>>44393558

My giant Box O Ships comes in surprisingly useful while playing 7th Sea.

Or, for that matter, using them for historicals. They're generally acceptable for use playing Wooden Ships and Iron Men, for instance.

1. Sick trips.

2. NEA, go back to the BattleTech containment thread. Don't you have something involving WarShips to post?
>>
>>44394023

Oh, oops. Forgot to turn my name off outside the BT thread.

Also, on-topic, I never really liked the base game as made by Wizkids. Running around grabbing gold just felt pretty "meh" to me.

Man O War or bust.
>>
>>44394073
Yeah, but the game had a lot of space for alternate game modes. The mechanics and base idea were decent.

>Wizkids
>Game full of Wasted potential

Man, no kidding. Shadowrun Duels would have been amazing with a smaller mini size and equipment packs instead of full action figure sized stuff.

Mage knight 2.0 started off slightly wonky but okay, and then went full retard when their figure designers literally stopped talking to the guys who made rulings, resulting in cavalry figures that could move 28 inches on a 26" battlefield, and attack twice without ever rolling to break away. They also banned water terrain after somebody basically made an army that was literally unbeatable unless you were building counter to it, rather than address their design choices.

Arcane legions (technically but not sorta Wizkids. Made by their remnants after they folded) had a so-so setting, but a cool mechanic and a very damn snappy and tight way to check ranges and movement that wasn't subject to fiddly ruler hovering. And then they made random booster packs for specialist units, and you could literally pay to win by subscribing to their unit designer which let you instantly power creep to the upper limit and break the standard unit design.

And yes, I mad.

28 inches on a 36 inch battlefield, rather.

I ate sooooooo many of those tiny dice!
I mean, they were so tiny, everyone did, right?
>>
>>44394113

Oh, I definitely agree. And honestly, just the minis were worth the price of admission. I probably dropped $200 at area big-box retailers when they were selling the $10 tins with 6 boosters in them.

/tg/ homebrews PCSG when
>>
>>44394482

I've got nothing else to do, why not?

The real question is "what do people want out of a homebrew?" Further development of the "run around, grab gold" game? Development into a lightweight historical game concentrating about just blowing up some timber ships? Something else? What's the scope of the project?

Regardless of the scope, I recommend dropping the "pull the masts off the ship to represent damage" mechanic. Nice idea, but the masts are too prone to damage when doing that.

What about both the alteration of the original game mode, to make it a bit more interesting, and the addition of other game modes, such as custom missions. DESU i think the game would also work as a "players vs dm" given enough ships. I think the original game could use not only the gold as a means of scoring, but also enemy ships destroyed, and their cost giving that player points. Maybe a deathmatch style that incorporates the gold, and the last person left standing gets the sum of all the gold on the map combined/2, because we still want to incentivize collecting gold to some extent.
>>
I still play it with my brother.

Unfortunately I tried to introduce it at my campus gaming club and no one was interested.
>>
I like the models, but I'd rather play the gensha games ship game, if I'd wanted a rules light ship battles.

bamp for tiny ships
>>

That would be worth looking at. I'm away from home for the holidays, but I'll look back over it and see what I can do when I get back Monday. If I come up with anything worthwhile, I'll put up a thread.

http://www.pojo.com/pirates/CotD/index.shtml

Review and strategy site for various crew and ships. I found it useful; it's too bad PotSM kind of faded away prior to the "game wiki" explosion.

Also, Crimson Angel is the most waifu-tier character. Fite me over it.
>>
>>44393558
Reworked it to include magic, which is almost entirely support as a mechanic and is exceedingly rare. Characters roll up Captains.
>>
>>44398620

RPG or the tabletop wargame?
>>
>>44398636
As in, what did I turn it into? A fusion of those two concepts. As a Captain character, you were shit without a ship and a crew. Even then, banding with other players was the only way to avoid running afoul of small groups of ships on patrol or pirate hunters, unless you were a playing a Gov campaign.
>>
>>44398676

I'm sorry, I was unclear. There was an actual tabletop RPG published for PotSM. I wasn't sure whether you were referring to that or whether you were using the collectible game as a base.
>>
>>44398753
Oh! The tabletop. I basically tacked on a 1-5 of basic stats and kept things exceedingly simple. Stats were a direct modifier that gave a roll bonus. A Captain who went Cha would have better negotiations, higher crew loyalty and morale, but didn't necessarily have good tactics or combat prowess during a boarding action. Int would give bonuses to tactics and negotiating deals, but people would be more likely to backstab you than a Cha captain. So on and so forth.

>>44393558
I got my first ever job at the same time as this first came out. Purchased a stupid amount of ships to play with. Fun game.
>>
>>44394177
Oh man, Mageknight 2.0 was so broken. I won tournaments by playing an Atlantean mage army that could cast a spell turning all of my enemies to Golems and then rusting and blowing them up with some other spells in my spellbook, along with Tezla's Manual that stopped Golems from attacking my caster. Players would immediately surrender.

She's an ugly slut, a terrible waifu, and your taste is shit just like she is.

Pretty fun.

I had a *mean* Spanish fleet, suited for combat games.

Towards the end of the game's run, and my extent of playing it, it started to form a solid Mercenary fleet but never really finished.
>>
Off topic, but somewhat related -

Anyone know where I can pick up historic / fantasy ship and boat minis? Kind of Man O War scale, but perhaps more generic, less race-based sculpts. It's for a homebrew, so it'll be pretty easy to incorpoarate any generic ships in the campaign.
>>
A booster driven wargame with cheap boosters to reel in the kids seems like a great idea. You'd think somebody would have picked it up and run with it in non-shit way.
I don't know how it is in Freedomland, but around here nobody gives any shits about Heroclix.
>>
First /tg/ game I ever got into, and probably started my interest into wargames. Played the dogshit out of it in middle school. I still have my collection around here. I was even lucky enough to get a couple 5 mast ships and some sea monsters.
My friend and I had an arms race to see who could acquire the best ships and then we would have all out battles with our fleets.

Someone was starting in on MoW equivalents a couple years ago. Don't recall which of the little casters it was though.
For more historical Age of Sail in about the same size range as PotSM, look at Magister Militum 1:1200.
