I need your help, /tg/. Help me find the most interesting reason for a fighter to wear an eyepatch, which is neither a loss of an eye nor that pirate thing they do to see in the dark.
>>
>>44382954
It's a magic eyepatch
>>
>>44382954
It looks cool.
>>
Hiding heterochromia in order to conceal his Marty-Stu-ness.
>>
>>44382954
He's trying to improve his lazy eye?
>>
>>44382954
being born without an eye - it's technically not a loss if they never had it to begin with
>>
It seals his power? It's for targeting? It's magic? It's so he can see into the spirit realm with his SPIRIT EYE? Demons (just generically)? Because he can see through it anyway?
>>
>>44382954
Make it the depth-perception equivalent of the classic leg-weight gimmick; he fights competently with it on, but when he takes it off his spatial awareness reaches new, unrestricted heights; suddenly he goes from capable to unstoppable. His hits are unerring, and he only ever fails to parry an attack when he knows it won't actually hit him in the first place.
>>
>>44382954
He uses his sword as a magic brush, but to do so he needs to see the world in 2D as if he was painting on a canvas. Two eyes would ruin the illusion. He writes magic runes in the air or something to cast spells. There was a 4E Swordmage paragon path about writing runes in the air with a sword now I think about it.
So basically he has Okami's celestial brush.
>>
It's power consuming parasite which keeps him from using his full battle potential, thereby allowing him to enjoy fighting people more on their level.

He has the soul of a legendary swordsman, perhaps even one of his ancestors, sealed away inside one of his eyes. The eyepatch keeps the spirit dormant, and removing it allows him to call upon the spirit's guidance in battle to enhance his combat techniques.
>>
>>44382954
He's hindering himself on purpose because he's so skilled combats aren't interested anymore.
>>
>>44382954
being born with third eye and trying to hide it - he wears bandana all the time, the bandana is actually eyepatch
>>
He was born blind and the eye patch is a rare magical artifact that allows him to see out of that one eye.
>>
"They're terribly comfortable. I expect everyone will be wearing them in a few years."
>>
>>44382954
His hidden eye sees a little bit into the future.
It's actually incredibly distracting and usually useless so he hides it. Doesn't matter if it sees into the future if it's perpetually in darkness.
>>
Eye infection.

Witch mark.

Willful handicap (aka - I'm actually left-handed)

Geasa

Actually born with just one eye/asymetric face and the patch/bandage conceal the deformity

His left eye shoots lasers all the time so he needs a patch to block it.
>>
They're wearing the eye patch as a symbol of their solidarity or commitment to a cause/order.
>>
>>44383083

I like this.
>>
He's actually completely blind but wants to bluff opponents into thinking he's less attentive on one side.
>>
>>44382954
The patch has a magical HUD on it. He can see where he is on a minimap, and communicate via text by looking and winking at letters.
It may have additional functionality
>>
Spring-loaded knife
>>
>>44383048
>my god! it's like fighting a man with two eyes!
>>
>>44383191
I call it the iPatch.
>>
>>44383083
So that one knight from Code Geass then?
>>
>>44383225
Sure why not he's like from the oriental living drawings.
>>
>>44382954
Ready to go full weeaboo? Sharingan
>>
>>44382954
Maybe he has a magic eye which does something cool, but gives him a headache (Or even something more dangerous) when he uses it?

Maybe he's just doing it to cripple himself and give his opponents a fighting chance?

Maybe the eyepatch is just magic and gives him a realtime readout of some vital statistic?

There are a bunch of reasons. Personally, I'm a hack, so I'm a fan of the sealed magic eye option.
>>
one of his eyes is actually a vagina
>>
>>44382954
Philosophical reasons.

His motto is "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind".

His eyepatch reminds him every day never to use his sword to avenge.

In a world where military and martial might are the measure of a man, indeed the only real power, violent revenge is the obvious answer to any slight. His father died on a quest to avenge his grandfather, who himself had died on his own quest of vengeance. He's seen too many close friends and kin die either on quests for revenge, or as the victims of vengeance themselves.

He knows that none of them were happy as they died, and he knows nobody was really happy in achieving vengeance. It only leaves behind more vengeance, more suffering, more hate. Another generation of pain.

So he'll suffer any price to avoid that savage cycle of revenge. No matter how deserved or sweet it would be, no matter how painful or humiliating the offense, he'll bear it. Because he knows can't bear the alternative.

>>
He's half-gorgon, so he wears the patch over his gorgon eye to stop it from accidentally turning random people to stone.
>>
He was cursed by an anime witch to have a single heart-shaped pupil. He covers it with an eyepatch because seeing through it is kinda weird.
>>
Think someone mentioned it earlier as something else, but perhaps he wears the eyepatch to hide something that could tie him to a real identity? Perhaps a birthmark that a certain prominent family has in their bloodline, etc.
>>
>>44383307
Before all the bullshit Sharingan was some of the coolest shit ever. That concept is loved and copied for a reason.
>>
>>44382954
It's glued to his face.
>>
>>44383589

How can you be sure the natural limits of your field of vision aren't heart-shaped already?
>>
>>44382954
His other eye is a gorgon's eye.
But it works differently than normal gorgon's eye, it can only paralyze people, not turn them to stone.

So when he takes it off he shouts: ZA WARUDO, and "time stops"
>>
>>44383625
Later on it's copying shit was really rather forgotten wasn't it? That was the unique selling point of the sharingan. You could see a jutsu once and be able to do an inferior copy immediately. With practice, an equal or superior one.
And then they turned into dream world, infinite flame, pocket dimension magic eye... Things that you could implant in your arm or something.
>>
>>44383654
Yeah it went downhill fast. I'm making a few concepts to mimic it in my setting.
>>
>>44382954
Covers up a port-wine stain birthmark. He's very self conscious about it.
>>
>>44382954
The eye under the eyepatch is actually a parasitic insect that is kept docile in complete darkness.
>>
He's created the foolproof, perfect deflection spell that amplifies any attack 100 fold and returns it to his enemy. The only problem is it takes so much energy he can only cover a range about the size of a quarter.

Solution? Put a giant target sign on one eye by wearing an eye patch on the other, then cast the spell on that eye.
>>
The eye was blasted with a backfired spell, and now it releases chaotic energy when exposed to light.
>>
>>44382954
He's read one too many works of fiction and thinks that, as he's too nondescript without the eyepatch, he'll get cut down like some nameless mook if he DOESN'T have some kind of distinguishing trait.

Bonus points if this is merely his latest attempt at not being a Red Tunic by having some sort of gimmick.
>>
>>44384127
I kinda like this. It's a bit OOTS Elan, but there are worse gimmicks. Maybe he grew up around too many bards.
>>
The eye behind the patch was once the eye of a lover, who he later discovered was a nymph. Things get awkward when they eyepatch comes off.

The man is not the character. The eyepatch is the actual character, controlling the physical body. Lich gone wrong.

The eyepatch is a portable hole. He stores his stuff in there.

The eyepatch is a portable hole. He stores any enemy he couldn't beat in there.

The eyepatch is a portable hole. He stores the woman he loves in there. She is in suspended hibernation. He has her eye under the eyepatch.

The eyepatch is a portable hole. All three of the previous at the same time.

His covered eye sees things as they truly are. This was somewhat okay when he was looking at normal people. When he looked at an outsider or aberration... He put on an eyepatch.

His covered eye sees everyone naked. Everyone.

His covered eye sees the contents of a parallel universe overlaid on the contents of the normal. The eyepatch helps him keep things straight.

The guy is living in Groundhog day. His covered eye shows him what he did on his last go-around.

I could go all day.
>>
>>44383083
Close to what I was going to suggest, if less severe.
>>
>>44384255
>His covered eye sees things as they truly are. This was somewhat okay when he was looking at normal people.
>Knowing the intimate nature of every single person you ever see
>somewhat okay
Fuck that. Eyepatch is a go.
>>
>>44382954
Different kind of character, but I once had a mage with a cursed eye that let him see the future. The only problem was that he saw ALL possible futures at once in the eye and not anything always useful. It's disorienting and confusing so he keeps it covered up.
>>
>>44384255
Hurry up, then.
>>
He made a pact with a seven-limb demon to gain his current strength but to solidify their contract, it used a needle to scratch an arcane sigil onto the sclera of his right eye.
It can still see just fine but he faked an eye injury because he doesn't want his friends and all the people who look up to him as their champion to know what he did.
>>
He wanted his wizard buddy to give him better eye sight than any man in the realm.
The wizard was successful but in 1 eye only and it too successful, 1 of his eyes is now super enhanced so much so that the smallest amount of light is as painful as if he was staring into the sun.
>>
>>44384349
Not to mention you'll see ghosts haunting people, grudges and strands of fate, auras and magical bloodlines all the fucking time.
Turns out he's a twin seventh son of a seventh son. His brother has the same problem.
Can be useful though,
"that guy is the head cultist. I can tell because I can see the clerical chain binding him to his god and power flowing into him from it. Also I can tell you that you and your wife aren't soulmates. Red threads aren't connected. Sorry man."
>>
>>44384440
>Red threads aren't connected. Sorry man.
"Well then who's it connected to?!"
And thus began the most successful dating service of all time.
>>
>>44383640
Maybe the doubt is the true curse?
>>
>>44384470
>your right hand
>>
>>44384470

Seems like you'd need very wealthy patrons of it turned out their soul mate lived across the fucking ocean.

Eyepatch is actually a cursed item put on him by someone he pissed off. If he doesn't do what they tell him to, the inside of the eyepatch turns into a portal. Not even the guy who made it bothered to figure out where it lead, but it isn't gonna be pretty.

The eyepatch has an illusion spell cast on it. It shows him porn 24/7.

The eyepatch has an illusion spell cast on it. It shows him porn 24/7. That porn stars an eldritch abomination and his girlfriend. It's a live feed. He can't take the eyepatch off.

The eyepatch records everything that eye would have seen. By placing the eyepatch flat on a surface, it plays stuff back for him.

The eyepatch has an ornate sealing spell inscribed on it. Anything immediately behind the eyepatch has its magical power cut to 1/3. He wears another, normal eyepatch under it. Fooled you.

The eyepatch collects electromagnetic energy in a jewel in the center of the eyepatch. He can throw the jewel and it will act like a grenade. A new jewel is then generated by the eyepatch.

The eyepatch is normal, but a momento of his most epic adventure ever. The high seas is a lot safer now.

The eye behind the patch is the last vestige of his divinity. He likes to keep it clean.

The eyepatch is normal. It makes you ask questions. He's a jerk like that.
>>
>>44382954
Barbarian was the strong guy,Thief was the nimble guy, Wizard was the smart guy, Cleric the wise guy and Bard the charismatic guy. Nobody cared who Eyepatch guy was untill he put on the eyepatch.
>>
A sentient, parasitic worm ate half of his brain and is coiled up in the empty section of his skull. The man begrudgingly allows the worm to stay since it controls most of his bodily functions (digestion, heartbeat, etc). The eyepatch covers his eye hole, which is the worm's breathing hole, and also muffles the creature's numerous snarky comments. Occasionally, the worm emerges to feed on the flesh of dead enemies.
>>
The "in over his head" trope is always fun: he's impersonating another (dead or living) famous fighter who lost an eye. If the former, maybe he eventually comes into his own and takes over the legend; if the latter, maybe he has to confront the person whose identity he stole?

He keeps a spherical Daern's Instant Fortress where his eye was. That's no eye, that's a space station.

A wizard friend of his managed to shrink a beholder.

He pissed someone off. They decided to keep tabs on him by tying his left eye to their crystal ball. Anything he sees, they see. Enjoy the live stream of the inside of an eyepatch, douchebag!

(Let's run with the matchmaker concept) His left eye sees the person's soulmate instead of the person. He doesn't like what he sees in the mirror.

What guy with an eyepatch? I see a guy with a peg leg. What's that Mel? You see a guy with a hook hand?

The goddess of love and beauty once kissed that eye, and he's never washing it again.

The man is actually a Terrasque. The rest of his mass is stored in a pocket in his eye.

Eye socket is actually a tiny portal to the bog of eternal stench. The patch keeps the fumes in.

Eye socket is actually a tiny portal to the plane of fire.

Eye socket is actually a tiny portal to the plane of water.

Eye socket is actually a tiny portal to the plane of lightning.

Eye socket is actually a tiny portal to the plane of bad comedians. If they get to see anything, the terrible puns and heckling won't stop for hours.

Eyepatch can be transformed into a brilliant disk of light and thrown. Whatever the eye it covered is looking at is its target.

Magical Google Glass.

On a raid, his eye was contaminated by a shard of glass from a love potion thrown by a mad witch he had been sent to deal with. The cleric who healed him gave him the eyepatch and told him that once he had recovered vision in the injured eye, he would fall madly in love with the first person he saw with it. Since then, he's worn the patch to keep the potion's effect at bay.
>>
>>44384887

The eye he covers was stolen from an elder god, and gives him incredible power. However, it's very, very sensitive to light and anything other than pure darkness means debilitating pain.
>>
>>44382954
A simple if a bit contrived one would be that the eyepatch is a keepsake. It belonged to the man who taught him the blade, who fought with precision and acuity in spite of one missing eye. After his master's demise, the warrior decided to keep the one-eyed swordman's legacy alive.

The Fighter isn't actually a Fighter but Level 1 Commoner, he is just some poor, dirty farmer living in the middle of nowhere until he found a magical Eye-Patch that is possessed by the spirit of a great warrior.
