I'm sure next year the Tau will get an anti melee Riptide. With a 3+ rerollable melee invulnerable and gives a regulat 3++ in melee for any other Tau in 18". Multiple strength D stomps and a tractor beam that can move any unit it target 12" to get them closer or further away as they please.
Then the rest of the Tau will be able to leave melee in their own movement phase and shoot at close range. Might need to use a markerlight, for balance.
It's the only logical thing to do.

Using allies is your best bet. Necrons and Eldar especially. Just kitbash as many weird mini parts together to create new aliens that function as the allies units they count-as would. Strap some Tau weapons and armor to WHFB lizardmen and get yourself some Tarellian dog-soldiers, etc.
