You don't need to thin your paint edition.

Seriously, always thin your paint on palette, you dont need much water, just wet your brush and start mixing.

I'm thinking a white, but uncertain.

White could work, or mix white into the pink and highlight with that.

So I got gifted an airbrush yesterday, and I'm really excited to use it. Am I going to need to pick up some medium to thin paints for it or can I just use water?
>>
>>44375807
You can run anything through an airbrush that you can thin (milk thin, like a wash). Water alone will do, but water+medium would be better.
>>
>>44375807
Airbrush thinner is usually best, as you don't want to interfere with the paint too much.
>>
>>44375848
>>44375857
Thanks anons, is there a brand of airbrush thinner you would recommend?
>>
>>44375873
That question is practically bait. I personally use a homebrewed mix, but plenty of things do the job - water, alcohol are the nirmal go tos.
>>
>>44375873
I use several, but it depends on what is easily available to you.
My personal favourite is the Vallejo Air Thinner and their Premium Reducer.
Should that be hard to get hold of, you could try Scale75, Createx or Schminke Aero.

Especially the Createx stuff is quite widely available, as it's also used in other airbrush applications, not specifically model building.
>>
>>44375913
>>44375906
I can get Vallejo stuff pretty easily, so I'll go with that. Have a merry /wip/mas anons.
>>
>>44375906
My mix, for the record:
- 50% acrylic artist's medium
-10% flow aid
-distilled water to fill

Airbrush Depot TC-20T AIRBRUSH TANK COMPRESSOR WITH WATER TRAP AND REGULATOR https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0038D38AA/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_uAAFwbZTVQSR5

Upgraded from the Harbor Freight double action (a complete waste of cash). Chose the Iwata over other brushes because of parts availability. Compressor is on the louder end of the spectrum, but hasn't done me wrong.

just slowly score the waist and leg joints with a sharp small hobby knife if you don't have a jewelers saw and take your time working through it, rushing it will fuck it.
>>44376408
>>44378251
using it without a tank is cheap and lazy, a tank provides continuous smooth airflow which if your doing anything but base coating is critical. It also provides a reservoir for the air making the compressor work less, overheat less and prolonged the life of the unit. Getting a compressor without a tank is a MASSIVE cheapskate move that will only lessen the life of your purchase and hinder the quality of your work. People who argue against are mentally ill and should be sent to the gulags.
>>
>>44378251
My old compressor didn't have one. A tank is a strong want for a couple of reasons, though:
- Compressor longetivity. Without one, it's running all the time (and wearing itself out while it does so). With one, the conpressor gets a chance to cool off while you work.
- Air pulse. Not something I've encountered, but some people say they have problems with the pulse of the compressor running interference with their spray. The tank acts as a baffle between the compressor and the output (no chance of pulsing).
>>
>>44378313
4 Squads (15 each), command (6) and 81mm mortar (the most expensive support weapon you can pick for 7GBP) bring you already to 73GBP.
With the build your army deal you get 2 vehicles on top of that. Not sure which ones are good so no idea about how much you would save there.

Even with 10% off the "Build an Army" deal wins in my eyes.

The premade bersaglieri army is 97gbp btw.

>>44378471
I can't say anything about the Italian models since i don't have any but from what i saw in the shop just a minute ago i don't like them. There is that "feather"-thing at their hats/helmets that i really don't like. I wouldn't want an army of these.
But besides that the actual poses of the soldiers look fine, and warlord pewter minis are usually very good quality. (i have several waffen ss soldiers).
They should come with seperate heads btw.

A FrostGrave warband, made out of the Reaper minatures Bones line.

I am liking the look and detail on these models a lot - and they have a nice price to boot. Not much in the way of customization options (they are single-cast miniatures) but I don't need a lot of miniatures for this game.

Letting the primer dry tonight, then I'll give them a lick of paint tomorrow and see how things go.

(reposted as I forgot to resize the picture and it was ten times larger than the miniatures I photographed!)

Keeping in mind that my room is about 16x16 feet, can i get away with just having a desk fan running and open a window, or would i need to invest in some sort of fume hood/ventilation system?

A catch pot for spraying your cleaners in is a must, along with some brushes:

4 SET Airbrush Spray Gun Wash Cleaning Tools Needle Nozzle Brush Glass Cleaning Pot Holder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0154HN2NA/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_mNCFwb69NTJM9

The pot can double as a holder. While on cleaners: I use ammonia free window cleaner for acrylics (don't use ammonia based; it'll eat your brush's chrome).

Open a window and invest in an appropriate dust mask. It's not obvious how much dust you're throwing until you start to clean your table after a session; what you clean is what you're breathing.
>>
>>44379183
This dust you're talking about. I haven't tried it out yet, so i don't know how much of it there is, or how far it flies. But could the mess be contained by simply spraying into an old cardboard?
>>
>>44379317
Not to the point where you're not breathing it.
>>
>>44379317

Buy a $60 airbrushing station with vent hose. From the sound of your questions, you're just going to kill yourself and cover your room in paint otherwise. You obviously can't be trusted to do it properly on your own, so just pony up a couple bucks and buy the easy premade option.
>>
>>44379512
In that case i'll probably go pick up a dust mask tomorrow.
Thanks for the advice :)

Speaking of, I'm now debating which chapter to paint the Marines in.

Why wait for the battlemat when you can make your own snow? Buy a box or two of baking soda, and some hairspray. Pour the box over your table, and blow it around. Then when you're satisfied with the snow, cover it liberally in hairspray.

Hairspray is hot-water soluable adhesive, so long as nobody spills coffee on the table, your extremely fast and good-looking snow will stay indefinately.
>>
>>44383925
Probably because he wants to be able to have stuff other than snow once in awhile

>>
>>44383454
Fucking awesome. I'll have to experiment, then. Browns and tans for base colors, right?
>>
>44384491
I use Vallejo for most colours and Citadel for metallics and their technical line. Citadel also has a larger range of washes and glazes.

Citadel base paints correspond with Vallejo 'Heavy' paints. There's a good guide on Dakka Dakka that shows which VMC and VGC paints match with which Citadel paints and it's fairly on target. I don't think the blues quite match.

Vallejo has dropper bottles, which I prefer since there is zero chance of cross-contamination and it's harder to not close the cap properly like with Citadel. (Seriously, people keep forgetting to close the back half of their Citadel paint pots.)

I think if you're basing in a colour you could do worse than investing in a Citadel or Army Painter spray primer + base. I use Daemonic Yellow to prime my Imperial Fists and it's a decent time saver and near-guarantees me a smooth base coat.
>>
>>44384720
I meant to add that if you're priming in White, Black, or Gray save yourself some money and get normie spray paint from your local hardware store. Krylon and Rustoleum make decent stuff. If you need a colour like Green, Yellow, Silver, etc. you might need to go with a hobby spray paint.
>>
>>44384739
haha yeah all the orks are sprayed in Krylon Black vehicles or White Orks. I think i'm going to grab a darker yellow and then glaze it like GW Orkanaut painting video.

Merry belated Christmas tg, not shown is a bunch of infantry I've just primer but have no idea what to paint. I want an urban like scheme for the whole army, anyone got any suggestions for what paints I should use? Been thinking the last few days but I'm apparently quite unimaginative.

super fucking easy, mix 50/50 rhinox hide and nuln oil, then thin that down to a tiny bit thicker than wash consistency and fucking slather that shit everywhere, comes out super smooth, and is perfect for sponging later

So, grey/black/white, or blue/navy/ice. Grab an accent color for the markings of the different squadrons and platoons.

Alternatively go crazy and replicate some berlin brigade style camo.

from 2 30k threads ago:
Why guess, when FW answers.
Challenge mode on: FW did not say which clear red, so assume it's Tamiya as usual, or their own Angron clear red.

>Metallic Scheme:

>It is black undercoat, airbrush with Iron hands FW paint leaving the lower parts of the armour plates black, airbrush upper parts of the armour plates with runefang steel as a highlight.

>Then a few thinned layers of clear red are airbrushed all over, waiting for the previous layer to dry before applying the next (so it would be useful to paint large batches of marines at the same time).

>Shade the recesses with nuln oil and then weather the edges with runefang steel.

>The gold is retributor gold, shaded with seraphim sepia and highlighted with runefang steel.

>The brass is runelord brass, shaded with seraphim sepia.

>The eyes are painted black, single line in the centre with white and then washed with FW clear green paint.

>The white on the bolters and legion icon is celestra grey, ulthuan grey and then white highlights. The hollow tactical arrow is from the Iron Warriors transfer sheet.

I am planning on having three units of eight acolytes, with a Wyrdvane as a psyker in each. The only problem with IG is the weapons, but i doubt anyone will refuse to play me because they hold lasguns rather than bolters. Will anyone really mind if i paint them with black, white and red, and clearly say what they are? If need be, i could always just do up a big pile of scouts in =][= colours, but thats 40 ausbucks for five, which is too big a hit right now.

I don't have a camera, but I'm using the lid from a Kool-Aid flavor powder jar and an old Holiday Coke bottle (the round ones) to make an objective, I just haven't decided on wether or not to slap a large cannon on it and consider it a Laser Defense Cannon for taking out spaceships, or putting a bunch of antenna on it and making it a communications grid of some sort.

More than likely it will be a Laser defense gun, I'm hoping to use it as an objective for a Nid vs. Mechanicus campaign eventually.

nup, if you mean money-wise they cost as much as scouts-40 bucks for 5 models-and pointswise theyre much more expensive per model, and lack the ten-point psyker available to the =][= goonsquads. I have about 200 points to play with remaining, so any major allied force is out.

There's nothing wrong with it as a base. It just needs a lot more ornamentation.

Put some more chaos symbols, banner, severed limb, etc on his body and you'll be good to go. Maybe wrap some tentacles around his left arm.

So I know we had that bout of nail polish remover questions but I have another, should I be soaking the models in it, scrubbing, or rubbing soaked q-tips on them.

Also the models are resin DeffDreads

Two sponges and a toothbrush. One to rub off paint and the other to wipe it clean quick. These are corrosives so wear gloves, don't inhale the fumes and don't let it stay on the model.

AV black primer,
AV grey primer zential highlight,
GW averland sunset to grey area,
Apply VGC dark fleshtone to bend black and yellow together,
hightlight with GW yriel yellow,
GW lamentor yellow to whole model,

Paint brush time,
Lining with GW argax holyshade,
edge hightlight with ushabti bone.

Lamenter yellow really brighten up the effect, it is sad that GW discontinue this pot. :'(

Hey /wip/, I've received a set of paints, but they seem to be too thin. They're still usable, but they're a pain in the ass sometimes.

Shaking helps somewhat but I've heard ceramic lava balls used as agitators would fix them up well. Anyone have advice?

if they're settled out, then yes agitators are your friend. The material is not particularly important as long as they do not interact with the paint (corrosion, that sort of thing). I personally prefer glass (received a ton of glass chromatography beads at some point, it'll be decades before I run out), but plenty of people use stainless BBs and other small spherical objects.

Complete novice here, with a question: what setup do you guys use to hold the minis while you paint them? Holding them by hand is obnoxious and gets fingerprints everywhere on accident, plus it's easy to drop and hard to turn. I see a lot of pics of people with the mini stuck on a paint pot with some sort of tack, so I tried something like that with 3M poster tack but it doesn't have enough adhesive strength and the model deflects when I try to paint it. Other posters have some sort of helping hand contraption; I picked one up off Amazon but the alligator clips mark the minis.

So, basically, what the fuck man. How do you guys make it work, and what do you use?

Also how do you guys do dark skin?
>>
>>44396262
I usually do skin with

white primer

vermin brown (dont know the new color)

leather brown (army painter)

Dark tone ink( army painter)

re highlight with leather brown.

I usually just stick my models to a cork with a tiny drop of superglue.
Easy enough to dislodge without damaging anything, and rock solid for painting.

Claiming that you HAVE to have a tank is a massive overstatement. If you're airbrushing a harley or basecoating 300 space marines in one sitting, then yes, you'll want one, but for 99% of what the average warhammer hobbyist uses it for, you really don't need one.

I have a nice compressor with a pretty large tank in the garage hobby area, and I still end up using my tiny tiny iwata neo air most of the time, which is a tiny tankless desktop compressor and not much different from the small, cute compressors that they sell for nail or cake decoration and face painting. I can use it for about 30 minutes before giving it a rest for 30 minutes or so, and in that time I can pretty much paint my entire desk Goblin Green if I wanted to, so as long as you're efficient and not sitting around thinking of what to paint with the airbrush in your hand and the compressor running, you're good.

The correct answer is "whatever works for you, anon" and in this case, it's very individual. If you're going to slap some coats of paint on a few space marines or a dragon, the tank is not needed. Just keep in mind that tankless compressors make more noise since they have to work whenever you use up air to keep up pressure (so they make noise while you use them, not a lot though), and that you'll wear them out if you leave them on for too long without resting.

I still have so much stuff I need to get painted by the end of February for a tournament, need to hurry up a bit.

So how do you guys paint Deff Skulls other than "blue". Only blue accents? Maybe a "I threw a bucket of lucky paint at it"?
>>
>>44396856
make sure you have someone equipped for as much defence as you can muster (a shield at minimum) and absorb the hits from him. Just stay away from the chain attacks.

Heya /wip/, I was just wondering if I could get some suggestions off you. For christmas I got a big pile of Empire Greatswords, 40 of 'em in fact, because I want to made a feudal Guard/Knight army. I've got a pile of lasguns and the special weapons I need to make them guardsmen, but I'm thinking about different heads, so I don't have 60 bearded old men marching across the battlefield. I'm looking for any decent replacement heads, be them male or female, helmeted or bare, just as long as they can pass for a relatively low-tech planet. I'm open to ideas for them too; I'm thinking about putting my command squads on horseback to make them represent nobles, but I don't know if anybody would get anal over that.

I'm having trouble priming with white.

I'm using Vallejo paints, see image for my recent results.

Left is surface primer, came out absolutely rubbish. Any tips?

Middle is normal white paint, slightly thinned. Only a bit better than the primer.

Right is black, no trouble applying this thinned.

Does anyone else have this much trouble priming with white?
>>
>>44397092
Have this stuff myself, just checked, yeah it is have no trouble applying this with my airbrush.

Did you shake it excessively for like 2-3 min?
>>
Suggestions for black and blue chitin?
>>
>>44397092
If you are hand priming get some Gesso, it's a art product used to prep canvas but works really nice as a brush on primer. It has been to cold to use a can primer and while tedious it has real nice coverage and you get quite a bit for like 12$. If you are talking about using a airbrush I have no clue.
