Back when the hobby was about being creative and GW didnt take itself seriuosly.
The Golden Demon 1990.

I've always been more of the collector/builder/painter type of player.
I used to collect all sorts of interesting trash and plastic scraps to make terain.

Very cool
Thanks for the pics OP
What is it about 80's and 90's paintjobs that's so strange? There's just something odd about them. They ALL seem very gaudy. Nothing wrong with that, but almost every old mini I see is painted in the same strange style.

It isn't called the era of fabulous for nothing, son.

Golden Demon 1992.
I remember how overwhelmed i was by the quality of the painting and the awesome conversions.
>>44372897
I spent hours looking at this dwarf army, admiring the attention to detail that went into eveyr single mini.

That paintjob on the dragon was just so fantastic, just like the visible energy fields on the termies power weapons.
>>44372942
That dirty ugly paintjob on those chaos commandos makes them look like rotting corpses, fantastic.
And those absolutely over the top orc commandos.
>>44372965
>>44372979
>>44373005
Thid GD featured so many very different painting styles, like this very dark dragon ogre for example.
>>44372931
That Land Raider is beyond words.
>>44372942
Given the time, the dragon is surprisingly subtle in terms of its color scheme.
The diorama isn't awful, either. Yellow wire for the powerfields is cute, as are the tripping termis. The depth effect for the chasm actually sorta works, too. Curious.
Thank you for all these wonderful images anon. I really should be peeling carrots or something but I'm sat here trying to see how many of these figures I remember instead! I've got.that space.marine captain with the power first and cloak somewhere... I'll have to dig him out!

Nice heaps of shit m8. Like any of this compares to modern miniatures like the Sigmarites or Goretide. Painting is average, at best. Technology has moved on, why don't you?

The 80s and 90s loved color.
A person from our era of beiges and grays would take some time to get used to it.

Golden Demon 1993.
awesome stuff

1994 was the year when painting took a change in direction, look at the extreme fading and hi-lighting.
Also an interesting article by Mike McVey.

And thats it for my Golden Demon pics.
So when did having a shitload of banners stop being a thing?
>>44374771
god, I love that old terrain
>>44374607
do you know what the cause was? was it an improvement in tech or models, or simply people getting better at painting and trying new things?
>>44374799
around 4th IIRC, paper banners can get finkiny, and with the skinny banner pole, they snapped if you did not put them back correctly fro transport. They made a small comeback with the molded plastic ones, but with GW not including guides on how to make them out of green stuff, and leaving plastic card/polystyrene as this strange magic material that they only seem to know where to get, rather than using it for robust banners. (spoiler: other hobby shops or general model suppliers)
>>44374921
I think it was probably due to Painting guides and painting sessions in stores, which lay a solid foundation of skills on which people could develop new techniques and ideas.
>>44372588
>WAAAGH ROLEPLAY
WHY ON EARTH ISN'T THIS STILL A THING
MY GROUP WOULD TOTALLY PLAY GROTS
>>44374921
My guess would be that as Golden Demon started to draw prestige it attracted higher standards from other painting competitions like Euro Militaire and some big international shows. The standards now are phenomenal. The prestige value placed on Golden Demon somewhat tarnished in recent years when they choked their own events, but in the late 90s and 2000s it was a big deal.
