We had an adventure in not!Ancient-Persepolis where a small coven had set up shop.
I kept on and kept on dangling a potential lead in front of the players and they just kept ignoring it in favor of a stupid side-quest about a poor family.
Basically, the Mother of the coven only embraced girls or androgynous boys, and all of her children to dress in women's clothing. This infuriated one of the boys she'd brought in, who, once he learned about a band of monster hunters in the city kept trying to betray the coven to them.
Gygax help me I tried, and they ignored me, so the party fell for the trap laid by the Mother Lamia and thus got their shit pushed in. No permanent deaths, and a couple of the children destroyed, but man that stung for them.
Pursuant to the common usage of Lamia though, I use "naga" for a race of ancient, technologically advanced serpent people. The main "quest line" of the campaign is actually about a human kingdom that's suddenly started growing exponentially in power, and the group's gotten hints that the naga are behind it.
Their last combat encounter with some naga went alright, since they were less stupid and actually completely circumvented the giant genetically engineered monster the naga were going to use to guard their own escape. They dynamited the cage the monster was kept in, and almost by sheer luck had sabotaged the escape device of the naga, and managed to kill three while the rest escaped. (A pretty serious deal, between their devices and psychic powers, an individual upper caste naga can be very dangerous, but the two upper caste naga in this fight were both trying to betray each other so they could save their own hide.)

I agree that there's usually a subtle distinction between furry stuff and simple beastfolk, but it varies a bit more than a wolf merely having pink fur and wings. I've actually found that a lot of furry stuff is plantigrade, whilst more 'traditional' stuff remains digitigrade, more like the animal that it is derived from. That's just a vague guide, though. I definitely wouldn't be ruling out anything just because it has a snout.
Plus, literally any anthropomorphic creature besides monstergirls have snouts, or at least a facial structure similar to that of the original animal.

Probably because the human-like head and upper body isn't really suited for swallowing huge things. Plus they have arms so they can just cut their food into smaller pieces.
I don't really consider swallowing food whole to really be a "defining" trait for snake-based creatures; I'd expect any creature based on a snake to either be venomous or be able to constrict their prey (or both), but swallowing their prey who can either be there or not depending on wheter it makes sense for the creature.
Unlike, say, deep sea fish, where their two defining traits are "glows in the dark" and "can swallow things bigger than themselves", and I'd expect any monster based on them be able to do at least those two things (plus look really freaky and probably have some form of weird sexual dimorphism).
