In the US Northeast the amount of rock in the soil is beyond belief. A couple centuries of farming attempts from everyone before the industrial age hit moved a lot of the surface rocks away, but 2 feet below and under is still incredibly rocky. I'm not talking pure rock, I'm taking a fuckton of small and medium rocks in the dirt. This causes frost heaves in the ground due to a different expansion rate between the dirt and the rock when temperatures change (dirt expands and retracts far more than rocks).
Because of this, American houses used to get utterly fucked by bumps coming out of the ground every season. To stop this, they put in state laws that all houses need to have a foundation reaching be 4-6 feet below the surface so the expanding soil can sort of hold the house in place despite the bumps. Since our houses go 6 feet under anyways, most decided to add an extra 2-4 feet and make another level to live in. That's why basements are almost all concrete, it's easy to repair and replace after a decade of erosion from asshole rocks. Since the northeast was settled first, lots of other regions modeled their houses off of the Northeast's homes since globalization wasn't that big of a thing and the alternative was asking Native Americans what to build in between both sides scalping each other (bloodiest genocide in history, Hitler eat your heart out). Coincidentally, that's also why you hear the joke that the US Northeast calls summer "Construction Season", our roads get fucked just as bad as the houses did, but we haven't fixed that problem yet.

This explains in a way why Americans and things that the American Media and people spread have so much to do with Basements, and why every American has a basement.
If you want extra space and have already built a house you can build a garage or some more rooms instead of a basement for more space.
Anyway if you want a basement for storage its usually more of a room or two and not under the whole house.
Construction must be somewhat more expensive with having to basically build what is effectively almost a basement under the entire house.
And having to reconstruct or consolidate must be a pain. I know, because my gran's house had some troubles with soil shift and we had to dig under the foundation and pour supporting reinforced concrete pylons.
Having to do that, even from a basement must be costly. Probably why Americans like wood houses. To us Europeans they just feel unsafe and flimsy, but when you have to contend with yearly repairs and consolidation it makes sense. Still a fire hazard.

We actually have alot of floor and a halves as well. The basement is 50/50 in and above ground then we can put the mainfloor as a split level then the 2nd floor is another. Then a good few have true basements below that half basement so the basement and foundation can go around 15' sometimes. This is often used to solve soft ground issues as this makes the foundation go much deeper and more solid than simple pylons though pylons may be used as well in certain cases albeit shorter.

My parents' old home was one of those older labourer homes, so there wasn't any extra rooms but a small kids room, a master bedroom, and a shower. The loo was in a 1x1m 'room' two steps away from the front door.
Because it was one of those post-WW2 rebuild era homes they didn't have the space for modern necessities as they only had the minimum of space, so washer and dryer were in the kitchen, had to be stacked and couldn't be larger larger than average because you'd have no walking space.
Then we actually moved into a modern home and we'd had a giant bathroom, so they were there.
My sister has a shed in her backyard for some weird ass reason with the dryer and washer, but most homes have them in the bathroom or a separate spot for them.
