This is shaping up to be a great source of entertainment:

> some judges are responsible for leaking New Kozilek/Wastes
> Wizards bans them AND uninvolved people just for being in a Facebook group, including people reporting the leaks immediately and trying to help Wizards
> US Southeast region is fucked because they banned multiple L3 and L2 judges
> judge stuff is entirely run by a third-party site (http://apps.magicjudges.org) because Wizards is a bunch of tech-illiterate monkeys
> said third-party took down their site in protest as response
> Need a Regional Coordinator? Can't use magicjudges? Better go to Wizards's site and look there! Except everything on
> http://magic.wizards.com/en/content/judge-regional-coordinators
> links to magicjudges with their statement that Wizards can kindly go and fuck themselves for their latest action

I don't know what any of this means. Can you explain this to an outsider?

Wizards PR is nonexistant. Probably underpaid and unqualified like the entire rest of the company.

No judges, no tournaments. The higher the level, the higher tier of tournament they can run

You have to understand the relationship between judges and Wizards, basically. In order to not have to compensate judges with wages, the entire Magic judge program is separate from Wizards of the Coast. Basically, Wizards took it upon themselves to suspend most of the level 3 judges (there are five levels) in the Southeast region of the US. This includes the regional coordinator. Some Level 2s and I think one or two L1s also got suspended. Note that they didn't get their judgeship suspended, they got their DCI numbers suspended, and as a consequence of that cannot judge events. Most of the suspended judges had nothing to do with the leaked cards, so everyone is angry. Two of the suspended judges were two thirds of the Judgecast podcast. Basically WOTC is shit, once again.
>>
>>44331160
You need a certain level of Judge to run certain type of events.

Not only did they ban EVERYBODY for the SE region (good luck with your qualifier tournaments, Florida!), their heavy-handed approach fucked with the wrong guys.

Remember, judges are volunteers who are badly compensated for their work. Wizards relies on them. In response to the unjustified bannings of innocents, they took down the ENTIRE infrastructure to organize judges because Wizards could never be assed to do it themselves.

They didn't ban everyone from what I saw, there's only one level 3 left, though. They did take out the only L2 in the entire state of Mississippi.

I don't see the remaining Southeast region L2s and the L3 sitting on their laurels about this, though.
>>
>>44331221
>>44331407
IIRC, a Level 5 judge is going to handle one of the bigger events in that region as replacement for one of the banned L3 judges.

The same faggots will be there, they'll just be spamming a different game - probably FoW or Netrunner or something. I'm okay with it, just because of Magic's status as a Bad Game (I don't blame the current devs, they're doing reasonably well with it, but the core rules are stuck in 80s game design when they didn't know shit about shit) but don't pretend they're just going to vanish into the Æther.

You're the Wizards' Judge Promo distributor.

After this debacle gets out of hand and ALL the judges go on strike, Wizards finally caves and agrees to their demands. Among the list of demands, the judges also request a special apologetic judge promo, to show how sincere you are.

>The people suspended were members of a private group receiving stolen confidential information about upcoming sets before this information was available in any public forum on the internet. This happened over multiple sets and well ahead of preview season for the sets in question. Viewing never-before-seen Magic cards in a private group — and not seeing these cards anywhere else on the internet — should be a red flag that the information you see is likely stolen. If you come across information like this, you should immediately report it to Wizards. Major leaks in the past have been prevented by other members of our community reporting similar situations to Wizards.

>Another concern that has been raised by some individuals is that they did not participate in the group during the latest leak. The issue with the passive participants is not a one-time affair; this information was shared within the group for multiple expansions.
>>
>>44334470
>>44334995

This is kind of irrelevant because D&D!WotC and MtG!WotC are almost entirely separate animals. D&D sometimes gets reassignments from the MtG division, yeah, but only nonessential personnel, and almost never the other way around. In other words, it's a demotion. And due to how Hasbro's rules work, the properties are also financially running separate books. As far as I can tell, they don't even have a shared marketing department, or if they do, they're timesharing but MtG has at least 10 slots to every one of D&D's, as suggested by e.g. Mearls taking the lead on marketing and branding. So, basically, you shouldn't let your opinion of one affect your opinion of the other. If they suck on both levels, it's just a coincidence.

Your point is valid, but I was trying to frame the comment from the judge's perspective.

At some point as a player or judge if things get too actively hostile; for example against white men, or safe male spaces in general you at some point would decide to just walk away.

Every time I see Helene Bergot's smug disgusting French face I get enraged. This woman is the cause of the bans, and a general villain.
>>
>>44340934
Sure, fine, dont call it retconned. Regardless, they forcefully written the character into that position. She/he/it couldnt just be a strong warrior woman, no - they had to play the LBGT card.

I've been hearing rumors of a strike, and honestly it feels like both sides are over reacting. We won't know the reasoning behind the other bans unless WotC makes a statement (which I think is unlikely). WotC seriously needs to hire a PR guy, but the judges should really wait for something before making such actions.

It's not like Alesha is some huge character in the long game of mtg storytelling. If it were a current pushed walker then I could understand the frustration even though I don't agree with it and they would probably fuck her up as a character somewhere when handling the gender issue. But Alesha appears in one set and is fucking dead now because she was ancient Tarkir.

I was out of the game when Theros rolled in, was there a big fit over Ashiok because they had no gender?

2011: 1

2013: 6

2015: 12
NOTE: I think a lot of people got banned for name duplication, in any case they were not counted as separate cases. There are also more ambiguous cases where people have the same last name but different first names, I assumed that they were siblings, but it could just be a pseudonym.
I'd guess the increase of bans is happening mostly due to the increase of counterfeiters, I agree the rapist case was fucking retarded though.
Looking at bans other than lifetime bans is clearly fucking retarded (at least without comparable durations) so don't.

Legal reasons I'm sure. Something like libel.

Exactly. What if it's not true?

Brand someone a cheater, and they've lost several thousand dollars of sponsorship money. They have a friend's video proof that they didn't cheat, so off to court we go.

Neither is gambling because only one person is making an offer that is contingent on a future event. You would have to add something like "and if that doesn't happen you give me $20 and tacos" to make it a bet.

That quotation is actually a decent summary of the Alesha story.

70-90% of Magic characters are one shots that we never see again. Even the ones from planes like Ravnica that have multiple blocks.

Except where they actually bothered to write a story and come up with a reason? It might be a stupid reason, but it's still more thought put into than no explanation at all.

>70-90% of Magic characters are one shots that we never see again. Even the ones from planes like Ravnica that have multiple blocks.
The point, which you so expertly failed to grasp, was that they did it with a one shot character literally nobody else would care about as opposed to a popular, recurring, or well established.

Hell, they actually did pander with Ashiok the gender neutral planeswalker but nobody ever brings THAT up, just Alesha.

As a last minute shoehorn it serves no purpose other than pandering. 100% pure pander.

Except that it didn't do that. It included a trivial explanation for Alesha choosing that specific name, but nothing about how or why he decided to become a ladyboy.

>The point, which you so expertly failed to grasp, was that they did it with a one shot character literally nobody else would care about as opposed to a popular, recurring, or well established
Because a parade of tacky, hamfisted one shot pander characters is SO much worse than one recurring one.

>Hell, they actually did pander with Ashiok the gender neutral planeswalker but nobody ever brings THAT up, just Alesha.
Ashiok is unknown, not gender neutral. Not that I expect anyone who likes Alesha to grasp subtlety, but you could at least read the MTGS Wiki.

This pisses me off more than Kiora Atua's retcon.

It wasn't even a fucking offensive name. The Maori are thin-skinned faggots who complain about everything.
>>
>>44346589
It's worth noting that, given the way the Mardu work, it's implied to not be something really WORTH mentioning in the set's flavor text.

Sure, one pissed off dude brought it up in the middle of an argument. But the rest of the Mardu reacted as if that were an out-of-line response.

I'm not saying their depiction was good, but rather that this is the hopeful goal of most transgender people: to be treated as their gender without comment.

Personally, I was more irritated that the story implied it was the helpful orc's own fault he wasn't named, because he kept saving other orcs rather than letting them die, then implied he could just claim a war name because of what he did. I mean, I get the core message was "stick to your principles", but they handled it just as shittily as the rest.

That pissed me off a lot, too. And then they tried to say it was offensive in Maori.

It isn't. Kiora isn't a fucking work in Maori. One fucking Maori poster was offended because Kiora was SIMILAR to another Maori word that meant "hello (informal)".

It would be like if someone made a character called Bo God.
>holy shit, Bo God
>that sounds a lot like Yo God

In Maori, Kiora Atua means "god kiora". And considering the fact that she's a planeswalker and the events on Theros, that's hardly offensive at all.

Fuck the Maori. Nuke will come soon.

where MaRo says " Ashiok does not choose to use labels".

You could also refer to Doug Beyer's comments.

Ashiok is WILLFULLY gender-unknown. Ashiok does not want you to know Ashiok's gender. That forces Ashiok into a gender-neutral zone, because Ashiok wants to remain as ambiguous as possible, in order to abuse fears latent to interactions with both genders.

There was no listed reason for Alesha wanting to identify as a woman but the reason for wanting to identify as another gender is 99.9% that you feel more comfortable as the other gender. It's safe to assume the same for Alesha and being that she was unnamed until she gained a war name it feels really dumb to argue about it. It's not a Ross to Sophie effect it's literally this kid wants to be a girl and has no name so let them name themselves what the fuck ever because some fucks are gonna call themselves god damn Zurgo in the future.

The grandmother bit was just what she wanted as a name
