Honestly, I find 5e to be worse. In 3e, even if playing the game quickly became a chore, at-least the character building process was genuinely fun. Hell, I'd go so far as to say that it's the most entertaining character-building game around.... it's just that actually playing it at the table once you've build the character is boring.
5e, on the other hand, takes 3e's playstyle, format, and aesthetics, but removes the engaging character-building process for something streamlined and balanced (which you'd think would make the actual gameplay better, but it doesn't.) It's like non-alcoholic beer. It does literally nothing well.

My problem with 3.5 is that most games I played in (as in most groups) it was all about numbers. Even when trying to get the game going everyone though mechanically. It was also my introduction to RPGs so that's how I started to think (I don't care about numbers so much now). Out of the 5 3.5 DMs I remember I can say that I only genuinely had fun with one of them.

Personally I need a bit more than that myself. I'd like some sort of categorization of what is the most defining and what is only a part. Maybe it's because I still have some of that 3.5 mentality. But the loosest characters I would want (for a player at least) would be Heroquest 2 or the knockoff (though I admit I don't know much about Other Worlds).

The fact that 3.X was not intended to be best at chargen is irrelevant, and the fact that playing "3.X chargen" is not the same as playing "3.X gameplay" is also irrelevant.
It's the same sort of thing as that stereotypical Christmas gift that the kid it was given to is so excited about, until he ends up having tons of fun with the box it came in instead. The gift that kid's parents thought they were giving sucked (at least, relatively speaking), but the actual gift that was given was great.
Or, if you don't like that example, it's like those Lego kits. They're meant primarily to be assembled according to the directions and then played with, but are often more fun as a pile of new pieces to build whateverthefuck with.
