Other than entertainment. What other reasons might a city have for an arena. Perhaps to appease the God of games. Any other practical reasons such as economy or anything like that?

Parading stuff?

>Why would a city have an arena?

An arena can be used as an amphitheatre, a grounds for professional sports, racing, animal fighting, and of course gladiatorial games.

It pacifies the populace with cheap entertainment, brings big bucks in for the city, makes the ruler far more prestigious, and brings in tourism.

And that doesn't even touch upon the people whose lives operate AROUND the arena, such as vendors, food stands, beggars at the gates, scammers, gambling on the games, you could have an entire city whose economy revolves entirely around their arena.

Arena's are the shit.

You could probably turn it into a market or center of worship. Emergency meeting locations and evacuation centers are also good secondary uses too. But if you are going to build an arena in the first place, the only primary purpose economics-wise is to profit off of the entertainment and tourism it brings.

Entertainment is a very broad category, and that lone is enough justification.

Arts, music, combat, sports, feasts, these things maintain an economy and keep your populous in check.

Otherwise, it can be used as an open market during non-event times to save space, or as a venue for news.

Every year there's a martial arts tournament. You have to be on the lookout however, sometimes weird guys come in with smokescreens and special effects and try and make the champ look bad.

This. Arenas are a major source of culture and revenue. Even if your city isn't big into bloodsport you can have games and jousts and non lethal shit.

It's also a potential advertisement for any number of things, from weapons and armor to mercenary troops and trained soldiers. Anything in the arena down to the costumes is put on display and brings prestige to the creator/owner

What this guy said.

This. Anon is absolutely correct that a small city can build an entire economy around pandering to people who come to the arena, especially if they catch on to the idea of merchandising and fast food. (Don't laugh too hard, the Romans did it.)
>>
Civilizations that can build arenas to seat thousands of people must have sports and entertainment that aren't gladiators, jousts, and chariot races. Team sports, theater, and music have their places in modern arenas, why not in old-timey fantasy arenas?
