Thanks to the airing of Digimon Tri I've recently gotten back into my love of digimon, and because of that I've been trying to think of the best way to incorporate it and my love of tabletops. Right now the idea I have is to use Monsters and Other Childish Things and fluff it to digimon, letting the players make their own digimon. I'm looking to see if anyone has used MaOCT for a Digimon game before, how it went, or for suggestions for any other system to use.
I'm afraid I can't help you there. I've roleplayed in a Digimon setting before, but not with that system, though it seems like a great choice to me.

I played that back in the day. Super fun, actually - Torments encourage you to play up your character's weaknesses, and ending up in a torment spiral where everyone gets upset at each other and it ends like that one scene where Tai's punching the shit out of Matt are great.

Yeah, I noticed. It went pretty well; the numbers weren't very balanced so we had one guy using his physical stat for everything and digimon generally having to choose between being able to hit and being able to hit, iirc, but it was still pretty fun to just wander around the digimon world having adventures.

So humans have connected with the digital world and have launched a huge VRMMO called Digimon Online, where human kids can meet their own partners and go on adventures. Our heroes are a select group of kids who managed to get special 'Beta privileges' on their first day playing the game. Cue some fights and unusual things happening (Shurimon attacks us on our way towards the main hub city of the game, weird wireframe digimon fucks everything up for local digimon). By the end of their first day the kids learn that their 'Beta privileges' actually means that they signed up to save the digital world.
Turns out the digital world had a war a long time ago, or maybe not too long ago, we don't really know, where 5 heroes managed to stop an evil force from resetting the digital world at the cost of their lives, more or less. We're still getting the details on that part.
So the evil first (The Host) have returned and the children's partners just happen to be those heroes from before and it's the children's responsibility to help the digimon get back to their former strength and help mitigate The Host return to power.

Yes, I realize that on Wikimon, you "Digivolve" Beelzemon into Beel Starrmon, but really, according to the card game, you just need to show the opponent a Beelzemon card you have in your hand to bring it out, then send a Demon Man or Fallen Angel Digimon to the Dark Area. I'm thinking the plot would revolve around freeing the digital world from the tyranny of the Seven Great Demon Lords and their minions. I want to include the Royal Knights, but they outnumber the Demon Lords by a fair margin, any suggestions on how to justify the Royal Knights having not already beat the demon lords back down?

the demon lords may be fewer in number but they have the ability to have slight control of whatever land they claim which while they're in said land they're stronger and have a powerful regeneration that let's them heal from most attacks rapidly. While this makes them almost godlike it only works in whatever land they have claim and if they want to claim more they have to leave there land to do so making them venerable.

Well you're free to play with power levels however you like, just say the demon lords are stronger, have the lore for the royal knights be a bit different to justify it.
Like rather than the chosen of Yggdasil they're just a round table of knights, particularly powerful knights, but not the strongest ever ever like the lore usually puts them up to be.
The demon lords could also just be stronger than they usually come off as or maybe they found some source of power that's pushing them over the limit. Maybe the same power could be used to support player eventually reaching their heights.

I like to think of this one as a cute and cuddly little blob of a Digimon that steadily grows more dangerous until it becomes positively frightening at Champion/Adult level, and then you get the "MUH AIBOU" moment and then the feral monster gets something of a handle on its beastly tendencies and Digivolves into Grademon, who still struggles with their darker, more destructive tendencies but is definitely not fucking liable to kill his partner in a rampage anymore until all that character development leads into the Digivolution into VictoryGreymon.
There really should be a better evolutionary link between Qinglongmon and Thunderbirdmon, I mean just look at the fuckers.
