How do you support your hobby/addiction?
Plastic crack ain't cheap.
>>
>>44311931

With a job. Because I'm not poor.
>>
>>44311931
I do work in return for currency.
>>
>>44312590
>>44312646
My question was more intended as "What kind of jobs does /tg/ have?"
>>
>>44311931
By selling real crack.
>>
>>44312722
Wanna throw a freebie my way?
>>
>>44311931
>How do you support your hobby/addiction?
>Plastic crack ain't cheap.

By buying gunpla instead of this stuff.
>>
It helps when you work in a gaming hobby store and can buy it discounted like yours truly

Other than that, it's called having a budget
>>
>>44312707

Working is for losers!
>>
>>44313213

Gundams aren't cheap either unless you're collecting an armada of 1/144's.

Any MG or even HG 1/100 aren't so cheap that you can buy boxes and boxes of them. Any higher in quality/scale and you get into 40k prices. Don't even get me started on Kotobukiya or resin garage kits for Gundam.

Even action figures are like 2-3 times as expensive as they used to be.
>>
>>44311931

I use the "buy one, steal one" principle, or as I call it, "buy one get one free". And when I say "get one free", I mean "five". The neckbearded clerk at my LGS is a slow dipshit and always distracted by whatever he's playing with the regulars anyway. Makes me laugh how he always watches black and hispanic strangers in the store like a hawk, but never suspects me even once!!! I even walked out with a "free" Land raider one time.
>>
I don't anymore. Age of Sigmar is literally so terrible that I've not bought a single mini since it came out. It is actually so heinous that its mere existence puts such a distaste for wargaming in my mouth that I cannot bring myself to buy anything related to this hobby.
>>
>>44312771
No freebies. Bring me a Land Raider and I can hook you up.
>>
>>44311931
Tabletop is the cheapest out of all my hobbies, so pretty easily
>>
>>44313237
Maybe I'll hand my resume to the FLGS.
That'd be a pretty sick job til I've got my degree.
Hell, with a job like that, if the money's good screw the degree.
>>
>>44313320
Where the fuck do you live that's giving you price hikes?
>>
>>44316738

America? You realize action figures were like $5-8 in the 90's and are now $15 right? Coffee used to be a buck and now it's $3-5. Fast food restaurants used to sell burgers for a buck and meals for $5 or less, now the average combo meal is $8+. The price of groceries has gone from $20-50 to $50-100.

Do you not pay attention or are you just a spoiled manchild?
>>
>>44311931
Same way my regular crack addiction: small doses over long periods of time.
>>
I'm a junior sysadmin so I'm in that weird grey zone where I can't really afford a house yet but my hobbies are chump change.
>>
>>44313328
Muricans confirmed to be psychos.
>>
>>44318462

Half-time junior db programmer here. Same here.

I mean, I could rent a flat (as I did during my horrible gf fuckup) but my family has a history of going bonkers while living alone.

So, I'm doing my engineering thesis, get paid from numerous sources and live with my parents. This leaves me with quite a lot of money to buy splats/ figures/ dice/ craft beers/ whatever even though I regularly save 50-75% of my income for the future.
>>
>>44317075
You've got the poors, anon; I don't make the crazy money ($13/hr), but I can still afford to buy 1-2 kits a month without blinking. MGs are going for like $20-40; more than that and your store is jacking you over.
>>
>>44311931
I work in a huge international concern and operate injection molding machines. Sadly we mold nothing /tg/-related.
>>
>>44313328
I remember the regular "look what i stole at my local gw"-threads.
>>
>>44313328
>>44321743
While I probably could steal quite easily from my FLGS, especially GW paint pots, it'd be shitty to steal from such a mom-and-pop place.
>>
>>44311931

>Plastic crack ain't cheap.
Oh. Wargames. Yeah no thanks.
>>
>>44321480
12-13$ per/hr not crazy when the avarge income is 4-5$/hr. I like the sarcasm.
>>
>>44322059
What are you on about?
Federal minimum wage is $7.25 ($6.25 after taxes).
Are you suggesting that the average American works for less than minimum wage or are you just that dumb/poor?
>>
>>44322110
Americlaps need to pay taxes on minimum wage?
Thats pretty fucking shitty
>>
>>44322110
GL getting more then 3-4$ per hour, you would have to have a green card for it. The avarge is 5-6$, but only because prostitutes and plumbers have a much higher income. Everyone else is lucky if he gets half of it.
>>
>>44322114
The only people working minimum wage are lazy fucks anyway.
In a place where a degree in anything is pretty fucking easy to get, below the line work is for illegals and the truly incompetent.
>>
>>44312707
>what kind of job does /tg/ have?
Sailor. Most sea-related stuff in rpgs is inaccurate and that pisses me off to no end.
Those fucking docks. Every. Time.

And the worse is that it extend to spaceship, so I can't enjoy a sci-fi setting when I see deckplans lacking any sort of bulkhead.
Kudos to WEG Darkstryder campaign for having an actually well-made ship.
>>
>>44322156
Almost went to SUNY Maritime and did the whole officer thing. How is is being a sailor? How would you describe your work?
Also, Bridge or Engineering?
>>
Some government money i get for studying, money from relatives, odd jobs for people i know, really anything. Can't really get anything else in Sweden, huge immigration and scum of the earth weak shitfaggot politicians has crushed the job & housing market.
>>

>The only people working minimum wage are lazy fucks anyway.
This is why your government and businessmen had the chance to buy you all; you don't give a fuck about anyone else and don't care about your nation.

Congrats on that shit vid. I made it 15 seconds into that shaky cam work and god-awful music, but I guess you got your view.
>>
>>44312707

I work in sales. It's nice, but the amount of money you can can vary. One year I made $40,000. One year I made $120,000. This year I made $80,000.

It's all over the palce.
>>
>>44322603
That's still pretty nice.
I could support myself on 40,000 and the rest would be fucking gravy
>>
Cheaper than winter hiking. That shit costs me a fortune.
>>
I work for an investment bank. I just do collateral management, so I'm not making the supreme bucks. But its a career, not a job, and I'm given a lot of free-time and I'm right out of college. So its hard to complain.

I think the only thing I dislike about working full-time is that if I want to play some cube on MTGO, there goes my entire evening. I really regret not taking advantage of free-time I had in college.
>>
Work in the kitchen at Hot Belly Mama's Cajun Cookery, an independent restaurant in Peterborough, Ontario. There is one large kitchen that has doubled equipment because we have a small brew-pub called The Olde Stone Brewery in the same building, and both work out of the same kitchen. I recently (beginning of November) have started helping brewmaster Aaron in the brewery downstairs on Thursdays, which seems pretty /tg/ related. It's a lot of information to retain and one of our cleaning materials is very hazardous but overall it is really interesting, challenging, and rewarding.

And I usually get to drink a pint of beer on my break which is sweet. Usually the seasonal casks. Tried mint chocolate porter and chai spice red fief wheat ale recently.
>>
>>44324978
>I could support myself on 40,000
damn, where do you live/do for fun? My calculations revealed I could live comfortably on half that (5k of that being play money), and I own a house. Don't own a car though.

>>44325185
well shit. I'm in philly and pay $550/mo mortgage for a 3 bed rowhouse in an okay neighborhood. I realized several years ago that if I knew I was going to be staying put for a while, it's cheaper to buy than it is to rent.

Would have had the house paid off by now too if I hadn't had to help the folks out financially.
>>
I'm a lawyer, and I make around 70000 dollars/yr when converted from yuropoors.
>>
>>44325303
In highschool, I was making 8.50 an hour barbacking part-time.Better paying jobs are out there. When I worked as a day-laborer, I was making $10 an hour (untaxed, in cash).
>>44325432
I'm pretty adamant on buying over renting, which limits me to waiting till I'm out of college to do anything.
>>
>>44322174
It's cool. Drills + workhours + watchstanding can be pretty tiring at times, though. You'd better like reading/watching movies, too, or spending hours at the gym, because there isn't a whole lot to do and everyone has different hours.
Also I'm a sailboat teacher during my holidays. That's an easier job but the pay is worse.
I love the ocean, love to travel, can't honestly think of any other suitable life. Notwithstanding, it's a good thing that I don't have a family, because that would be pretty hard for them. It's already quite a bother with the friends.

Oh, and bridge. Only rats can live in the hold ;)

What are you doing, anon ?

I make $18/hr explaining shit at a museum. Unfortunately I'm in NYC, so I'm still living with my parents in my late 20s and it's wrecked me psychologically. On the plus side, my cost of living works out stupid low and I can put money away and still buy tons of minis.
>>
>>44322216
>>44322136
for the record this anon does not speak for all americans, nor is his appraisal remotely accurate.

A large percentage of individuals working minimum wage in this country are citizens or legal immigrants. Most of these individuals are very competent at their jobs because they lack the kind of job security benefits that allow people to be lazy and not do their jobs well.

In addition, a degree in this country is not a guarantee of a job above minimum wage. When degrees are seen as "pretty easy to get," they are not seen as something special which sets you apart from other potential candidates. At most a degree will keep your resume from being thrown out immediately - an advantage which for many is not worth copious amounts of debt.

When I was looking at SUNY Maritime, I had just gotten out of a shit ROTC program and the last thing I wanted was to be in another environment where I had instructors up my ass 24/7. Made the mistake of getting invested in a relationship that makes committing to months away impractical. Working oddjobs while at community college.
Maybe I'll find myself a sailor one day, I'm always reading up on oceanography and I've been driving/repairing smaller boats for as long as I can remember. Never worked on anything bigger than 100ft though.
>>
Working actor. Travel and the nature of the job leaves me little time for gaming, but I love both like hell still. If I know I can afford time and the private space for a while, I'll ask my gf to send me some WIP stuff to pass the time on.

Software Engineering job at a rate that is well below industry standard (despite all the senior engineers vouching for my ability I can't get a raise or promotion because of my age) but still pays my mortgage.

as much as I love my /tg/ hobbies I don't spend that much money on it actually. In the past year I've spent around 300 dollars.
>>
>>44332334

$300 a year is more than enough for 40k as long as you're not buying brand new MSRP FW or something. Even then that's actually enough, that's like 10 infantry kits or 3 large tanks a year.

As long as bills are being paid and food is on the table. Can never understand people who complain that 40k is "expensive". Is it expensive for what it is? Sure. But if you can't afford it AND want to bitch about not being able to afford it, that says a lot about you as an adult, more than it does GW's pricing. Even worse if you can easily afford it but whine anyway. So do you want it or not? If you do and can afford it, why bitch? If you don't, why bitch? Seriously.

I bought a couple boxed paint sets (vallejo), a Dark Vengeance kit, a new carrying case, a 100 pack of 32mm bases (marines look gorgeous on these), and an ibook codex (someone gave me itunes money so that one wasn't out of pocket)

are there tons of awesome kits I'd love to have? absolutely! Do I even have enough time to play with my toy collection as it is? no

just buying stuff will not fill the empty void in my life.

I try to keep my business the least emotionally involved for my johns as possible since I feel that I'm extorting them emotionally.
Still, there was this old guy that offered me 1k dollars to stay with him for a full day, watch movies and talk about his life. I was tempted to accept it, but the guy was rather lonely and his late wife left him some decades for being gay.

Instead of accepting it, I read and excerpt of the I Ching for him and told him that what he had to seek something more sincere and that my services weren't going to fix his problems. Luckily things got better for him afterwards.

>barred from real employment due to every place requiring 2-5+ years of experience, which is impossible to get because every place won't hire you without experience.
Isn't that what internships are for?
>>
>>44334203

Internships are a scam and not offered everywhere anyway.

Because working for years without pay when you need to pay bills makes sense, right? Otherwise you might be labeled lazy or stupid for actually trying to have a paying job.
>>
>>44334203

You really think all the baby boomer management and CEOs had to do an internship or work years before they got their job? They went in straight out of college with a bachelors, but these days you are either under or over qualified, as if overqualification was a thing. I have a job and I'm not mad, but retards like you are why they get away with this shit.
>>
>>44334387
>Internships are a scam
Not all of them are, but it's frequently the case, yes.
Also, in my experience, having the right friends matters as much, if not more than, having a degree, nepotism makes the world go around.
Ideally, you want to have both of course
>>
>>44334409
>as if overqualification was a thing
It is to employers. They think if they hire someone with a Masters when all you need is a Bachelor's they'll leave as soon as a better job becomes available.

Its more about turnover rate than qualifications.
>>
>>44313358
This is a good deal.
>>
>>44334409
The baby boomers are running the game right now.
The fuck is anyone supposed to do but play by their rules til we're the ones in a position the change things?
I'd rather put my time into working towards something I care about that working anywhere that will throw me a bone.
>>
>>44334432

Yep, it's all about connections. Landing a job can be done through a simple connection right there, bypassing all the requirements and possibly even the interview/qualifications check.

>>44335395
I'm no expert but here's a quote.

"Back in the dark ages, it used to be if you wanted a computer, you built it yourself. And I don’t mean order the parts and put them together, I mean soldering the chip sockets into a breadboard and assembling all the bits by hand." - http://techcrunch.com/2010/07/27/apparently-you-can-still-solder-together-your-own-computer-if-you-really-want-to/
>>
>>44335484

That's not even building at that point, it's manufacturing your own PC. Which is technically a form of building something I suppose.
