I think the modern Mall started in French's Arcades. Having trouble finding an example and I can't remember the names of them.
Malls seem to be what they are due to inventory diversity and ability to window shop. Wandering around on foot as diverse spectacles and art styles vie for your attention/wallet.

Some of my fondest memories are in the Padre Staples mall in Corpus Christi, and I have a few really special times and scenes I play in my head constantly about hanging around in the Riverwalk Mall in San Antonio around this time of year when I was in college.

I kind of thought that there might be hintings that Marcille had some affections for Laius in the earliest parts of the manga. He is a pretty handsome dude, after all, and she stayed with him even when two other members of the group left. But the whole 'I want to eat monsters' has put a damper on that, and Laius never seemed to return any affections or even really notice her beyond as a friend and wizard (being our lovably autistic warrior), and she seems overall more focused on learning and magic anyway.
Honestly, I'd just be glad if they stayed friends. I don't want this to turn into some romance manga, and it'd feel out of character to even hint at anything at this point.

They spent an entire chapter or so going over how Marcille feels inadequate, and even though they proved that she isn't, I doubt her feelings just went away.
And again, like I was saying - maybe people are thinking too much about friendships. I feel like Marcille learned a lot from Farlyn, and maybe she feels she needs to return the favor? I don't know.

The manga hasn't gone into much detail on magic in the past, so I'm not going to argue much about it. But there was a chapter about how Marcille thought Farlyn was better, or at least felt she wasn't being as useful as she could be.
