>Your standard Final Fantasy game only has three girls in your party. Each one corresponds to either being "the Aerith" (the pleasant good girl main love interest), "the Tifa" (the dark, mature, or nuanced action girl), or "the Yuffie" (the hyperactive lolita). The line continues on respectively as Rinoa/Quistis/Selphie in VIII, Garnet/Freya/Eiko in IX, and Yuna/Lulu/Rikku in X, and Paine replacing Lulu as "the Tifa" in X-2. This was nearly-avoided completely in XII with none of the three female PCs being easily fit into those categories beyond their visual age. XIII reset it back a bit with Fang being the clear "Tifa" and Vanille being the "Yuffie" of the game, but Lightning truly breaks the mold as being nothing at all like her Aerith predecessors. This is the first time since VII that the role is taken up by an NPC in the form of Serah.

Points to Lightning for being different, but the Tifa is always the best girl.
>>
>>44310612
Isn't 10 the baseline for stats? She's below-average definitely, but something like a 5 Wis makes you a desensitized wreck and 5 Cha is almost inhospitable to everything.
>>
>>44310732
That sounds about right
>>44310681
Damn. I wonder how early that started. IV had Rosa and Rydia, but I don't remember a third girl. V only had Lenna and Krile. Terra, Celes, and Relm match up pretty well to those three archetypes, though.

What in the fuck?
Did these people never play FFVII?
Tifa is a demure, reserved, quiet girl who endlessly crushes on her childhood friend while Aerith is a sly wicked girl from the slums.
It was Aerith who convinced Cloud to crossdress to sneak into a mob boss's sex dungeon, remember.
These descriptions are ridiculous.

It's a shame that the original Tifa was the worst girl, because every other "Tifa" is great.

No, that is extremely incorrect.
Rather, she didn't contradict Cloud when he spouted off his revisionist history because she didn't have the nerve to contradict him.

Basically, she starts as sorta a cold aloof Merc type, but when the shit and the fan meet, she busts out to help her little sis.

I have played every Final Fantasy game to storyline completion. (Only up to 3.0 on XIV though, sadly I dropped it by 3.1.)
Honestly, I don't share much of the problems people seem to have with XIII. I found the paradigm system to be fast and furious once the game got underway, though I certainly think XIII-2 pulled it off better.

So my question is, has FF had the same kind of recycling character types for their male PCs? I mean, there have been more than 3 dudes in a lot of FF games, so I don't think it matches up so well.

Also XII only feels different because they focused so intently on making the cast match up to Star Wars characters. Vaan and Penelo were Artoo and Threepio, Balthier was Han, Ashe was Leia, Basch was Obi-Wan, and Fran was Chewie. Everyone took turns being Luke depending on who the plot was focused on at the time. The Judges were each different aspects of Vader over the whole original trilogy. No one really got to be Palpatine, though. Venat was too much of a bro.

No, and the vague "recycling" mentioned in that post is barely accurate (and in the first place, inverted) to begin with.
It's a rudimentary simplification to character archetypes as "introvert", "extrovert", and "extrovert I don't like".
How is Eiko hyperactive? How is Rinoa a pleasant good girl? How is Tifa dark or mature? How does a pattern that only apparently works for four games create a standard?

But Vaan just grates after a while, and I guess if he was just along for the ride it'd be easier to deal with, but the game tries way too hard to make it about him and it detracts from what would have been a fantastic story and turns it into a merely great one.

Say what you will about the gameplay, XII probably had the best plot of any FF, and the characters were more nuanced and interesting than many games in the series.

Also, Ivalice a best. No other FF setting even comes close in terms of depth, mystique and scope.

Character progression is made into an absolute joy. Everyone was kinda same-y in XII core. IZJS means you assign a job to a character, locking them in to a dedicated role. It's very fun.
Also you get a fast forward feature to zip through towns with to ease the game's flow.

I recommend having a black mage and a white mage, but the other four can be whatever you like. There's 12 jobs but only 6 characters, so you can get some odd combos.

Imo X was the last real FF and even it suffered from trying to appeal to to many people instead of FF fans
3D gaming and the popularity of FF7 in america put such high expectations on the franchise that they had to raise its mass appeal and 8, 10 and all the later ones suffer because they look like anime characters, and everything is stylized and and fancy instead of gritty and real like 6 and 7

III, V, FF:T, VIII, X-2, XII, XIII-2, LR, Type-0
Characters/Setting/Story:
FF:T, FF:TA, VI, VII, IX, XII

To be honest, almost all the FFs have at least alright gameplay, excellent soundtrack and shit story. I'd say XIII-2 and LR fit in more than adequately, with XIII-1 sadly being one of the lowest points of FF.

FF XIII has one of the worst group of protagonists I've ever seen -- they're so fucking stupid that they do *exactly* what the villain has repeatedly told them he wants them to do and help him DOOM ALL LIFE (for completely nonsensical reasons that are never actually explained to the player), but it all works out because of the Deus Ex Machina of Friendship. Which only works for them because fuck you we don't understand how to write a story.
Lightning spends a chunk of the game willing to kill innocent people to save her own skin, Fang is a literal fucking pedophile, Vannile is the most insufferable thing ever, Snow is duller than a bag of hammers, Hope's a whiny shit and Zasz threatens a child with a gun.

In addition, the entire game is just a single long-fucking corridor with nothing interesting going on driven by a story that makes no sense and is largely not actually told to the players but hidden in datalogs for no reason, and relies on a combat system that requires virtually no player input whatsoever.

And to top this turd sundae off the entire plot shits itself to death the *instant* Barthandalus speaks because the previous ~20 hours of aimless and goal-less meandering happened because the Fal'Cie aren't supposed to be able to communicate well with humans -- AND YET BARTHANDALUS DOES. It's seriously a major contender for the worst written piece of fiction I've ever seen in my entire life. And you think it's . . . good? Are you trolling or just severely brain-damaged?
>>
>>44316979
Huh. I thought Spoony was exaggerating throughout that one. That's awful if the game really was like that. The fuck, Squeenix. You used to be decent at this before you grew that Enix-sized tumor.
>>
>>44317259
He exaggerates a lot.

He wasn't with FF13
>>
>>44311343
Lightning falls apart midgame when she starts seriously considering genocide despite having little to no reason to do so. Plus she doesn't really get a character arc at all (they try to set up a "learns to have friends" thing, but shoot themselves in the foot by not having it go anywhere) - the plot gets resolved when the other girls do magic things that they apparently could have done all along.
>>

>>44317351

What bugged me *most* about XIII was the paradigm system. Every fight ultimately boiled down to "commando until broken, ravager until not broken, medic as necessary." Played through the whole game and I don't think I needed to engage my frontal cortex one goddamn time.
>>
>>44317452
That more has an issue with how the auto command is almost always the best command to use in the game, and your real input is switching paradigms and using items. The game is stingy with money and items for the first 75% of the game anyway...

Synergist and Saboteur were actually pretty effective if you used them since only one debuff can't affect most bosses, and sentinel has great use in the telegraphed heavy damage moves.

But overall, yeah the game sucks with how Autobattle is the best option to do 9 times out of 10.

>favorite FF game?
Hands down, FF Tactics. If I have to choose from the main series, IX.
>favorite playable dude?
In terms of their character, Cyan. Just mechanically, Ramza, once I turned him into a blade-grasping one-punch-man who yelled at himself constantly.
>favorite playable chick?
That brief bit in IX where you get to use Beatrix in combat. If she doesn't count, then Freya.
>favorite antagonist?
If he counts, Delita. If not, then call me cliche, but Kefka.
>favorite boss?
Pretty much any of them from X. That game had some slick boss fights.
>favorite NPC?
I really like the concept of Planet in VII. For a normal NPC, I'd go with VI Cid.
>favorite setting or world?
I really like the feel of IX's world.
>favorite individual level?
Ancient Library from V. But I'm a sucker for haunted libraries.
>favorite summon and/or monster?
Red Chocobo in Tactics. Totally counts.
>favorite weapon?
Any fisticuffs, honestly.
>Have you ever based something in your games on something from the Final Fantasy Franchise? How'd that go?
Airships airships airships. IX was a fantastic inspiration for them.

Alternate retelling:
It's a story about a bunch of protagonists thoroughly screwed out of their lives, their hopes, and their dreams, and constantly hounded by the only people who could possibly help them. Even when they start to recover and try to make moves forward, they find out they're trapped in a massive conspiracy involving the very gods of their setting to commit mass genocide.

Lightning is the only party member who needs little coddling or help, managing to stand up from being branded anathema to the universe and immediately start setting goals. Hope is 14 and just watches his family get gunned down and otherwise murdered for the sake of 'peace,' intending to get revenge but eventually moving on emotionally.

Snow is a terrorist with a hero complex, thinking he's fighting against a terrible system - And while he's right about the system, he has to realize that being a hero is harder and takes more than mindless violence. Sazh is a single father who's driven to suicide when his family is taken away - Worse then death, his son is threatened with the same celestial slavery that he was cursed with, but for a different, even more unpleasant god who then decides to do it anyways for the luls.

Fang and Vanille are actually the last remnants of a civilization wiped out a century ago because they're the embodiment of the last apocalypse that tried to destroy all humanity - But they failed, so they were kept for use later on. Vanille spends the game trying to run away from her past where she turned into a demon and killed thousands of people, and Fang spends the game trying to reunite with the only person in the world who she gives a damn about.

None of the characters can do a goddamned thing about their fate, especially when they find out that their malevolent masters can just make more pawns and try again, even if they try to run away.

Then the Hand of God fixes everything in the end because Square is a bunch of hacks.

I've still never gotten around to playing IX. How is it?
>>
>>44317684
Oh, there are definitely some great details in the plot, but the over all structure (and what ends up happening to get them from point A to point B) is really fucking stupid at times.

Shit, at least in FF8 they use an excuse of "We'll allow and even help the big bad sorceress from the future to compress all of time and space SO WE CAN PUNCH HER FACE IN and then revert time to normal by doing so."

FF13 didn't even have that.
>>
>>44312865
>favorite FF game?
Gotta be Tactics, for a whole host of reasons, with IX as my favorite from the main series. The ultra mega chibi weaboo art style doesn't matter when the writing's that damn good.

>favorite playable dude?
Goin' with Locke. Best treasure hunter there ever was.

>favorite playable chick?
Tifa. You only play as her for a short period, but all the other girls that could fit this category suck, so...

>favorite antagonist?
You, with a woman? You can't even catch a ball!

>favorite boss?
Titan EX from FFXIV. Nothing gets me pumped like butt rock, and that huge-ass rock is damn fun to fight (assuming you have a good ping).

>favorite NPC?
Beatrix babyyyyyyyy. She kicks your ass twice (three times?), and you never get revengeance, leaving her undefeated forever. Plus she's got this whole Paladin Bodyguard vibe that I love.

>favorite setting or world?
Ivalice. FFT's version, with the lost generation and the oppressive mega church.

>favorite individual level?
Motorcycle fight in FF7.

>favorite summon and/or monster?
Knights of the round. Then again, maybe getting it was such a pain in the ass that I have to justify the effort by loving it. I'll never forget the hour I spent save scumming to get a green chocobo, or the satisfaction of casting KotR for the first time and watching KING MOTHERFUCKING ARTHUR wreck house.

>favorite weapon?
Lance, as used by Dragoons, because Dragoons are the best Final Fantasy archetype.

>Have you ever based something in your games on something from the Final Fantasy Franchise? How'd that go?
The BBEG's right hand man was a Dragoon (because see above), and his boss fight was him leaping 10,000 feet into the air and plunging into the party before leaping again, hit-and-run style. They beat him by throwing down a web spell and standing in the middle of it, fucking up his ability to jump out, and grappling/gang stabbing him to death.

They really want it to look like they've decided to pull an FF8, but it's really hard to look cool doing that when that is literally what the bad guy wants from you. It's hard to make a simple, effective plan based around breaking in and NOT killing the bad guy.

In Square's defense that's a really damn hard plot to do, but then they have to write their way out of it. And as evidenced recently, they can't really write their way out of a paper bag.

At least XIII-2 was a blast to play and Lightning Returns is a lot of fun if you skip all the long, boring monologue cutscenes that re-iterate information we already know.

In lieu of my FF folder being eaten recently, have an agrias.
>>
>>44317696
First two discs are a great retreading of the more classic oriented Final Fantasy games.
Discs 3 and 4 shit the bed by trying to steal VII's thunder, and just generally going batshit.
>>
>>44317696
>Gameplay
So you know how in other Final Fantasies, it doesn't really matter who is in your party as long as you have the materia/job abilities/junction magic/licenses? FORGET THAT SHIT! Every character has a distinct set of abilities, and which characters are in your party changes frequently for story reasons, so you better be familiar with who does what and when or your going to be having trouble. It isn't best to blindly equip the best swords and armor you can afford since the abilities you have access to are tied to your equipment, and the crafting system - while a simple Item A + Item B + Gil = Item C affair - offers a lot to discover as well.

>Story
What starts as a pretty grounded tale of medieval intrigue escalates. I won't say how, but it's pretty good. The characters are likable enough though you may find some of them annoying (I'm sure the lack of voice acting is a blessing to this game in that regard). They're all proactive in the plot and have their own character arcs, never simply following the protagonist around because reasons. The overall tone is among the most upbeat and adventurous in the series.

>Visuals
This is what turns most people off from this game, and all I can say is that you'll either love it or hate it.

>Optional Content
A metric ton of the stuff. Not FFXII levels of it, mind you, but a lot of places to explore and things to discover and at least one uber boss that you can lose to. There are even a couple segments of the game that play out differently based on your choices earlier on - it doesn't effect the overall story, but it adds some "save before you walk into this area and try it a couple different ways" replayability.

>Time
Reasonably fast, despite the four discs - most of that space is taken up by the pre-rendered cut-scenes. The ATB in random battles moves at a decent clip, and against weaker enemies you can set your spells for AOE to end the battle fast.

What really irks me about FF13 from a storytelling perspective is that they could have explained things a bit better or had the characters reason things out a bit sooner.

Lightning's only goal was to save Serah after she got hit with the fal'Cie brand, and when she got branded she almost immediately spent the rest of her time trying to figure out how to get un-branded and save her younger sister. She is a soldier through and through and doesn't put up with anyone's bullshit.

Hope is a 14 year old who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and is struggling/failing to deal with all these new powers and watching his family get ripped away from him.

Snow got branded cause he was with Serah, and he knows that the system is flawed. But he's got a hero complex and thinks that if he just induces chaos and anarchy that the rest of the populace will wake up and realize what's going on.

Zasz is a father trying to reunite with his son after they got branded and is willing to do some pretty evil things in order to do that. Don't really know why he's got a baby chocobo in his hair though.

Fang and Vanille were people that were supposed to destroy Cocoon a century ago but didn't, and got re-awakened to try and do it again this time around. Fang just wants to protect/fuck Vanille, while the other just wants to live a normal life.

If they didn't spend ~20 hours of keeping the protags separated from one another until they all got to Pulse (like if they all joined up after the major fight at Hope's home as I believe that is the only time all 6 meet up before Pulse) and tried to figure out how to use their new powers to stop/destroy the fal'Cie before being turned into monsters, I feel it would have made for a better plot.

I also think there should have been more exploration of Cocoon and not just sticking us on a railroad until we got to Pulse. 13 had potential, but Squeenix can't seem to write a decent story since the PS2 era.

Completely and utterly over-rated.

She is not a compelling or interesting character. She is the result of somebody trying to make a female cloud and failing.

Why are there three waste-of-time games devoted to this cardboard cutout and her hack world?
