Hey, /tg/, I need help with the name of a class for an RP I'm in. The central Idea of the class is that it uses big swords and parries a lot. Like a duelist that uses a greatsword, essentially. This class is supposed to be a base class whose schlick is that its a hard hitting "evasion"(parrying) tank, like a Duelist/Barbarian hybrid, I guess. Could you help me think up of a name?

I'll dump big swords in the meantime.

Doppelsöldner.
It's actually a more specific subcategory of Landsknecht which >>44305967 already mentioned.
A Doppelsöldner (literally "double pay man") was a Landsknecht who was entitled to twice the normal rate of pay.
There were two ways to be so entitled. One could volunteer to fight in the very front rank, earning double pay in exchange for higher risk.
Or one could be a certified Meister des langen Schwerts (lit. "Master of the Long Sword") of the Marxbrüder (the Brotherhood of St. Mark, who had a monopoly on the title by decision of Frederick III), wielding a bloody great zweihander, thus being automatically entitled to double the pay of some common slob.

Why would you use a big weapon when your focus is parrying.?

I'd feel the need to add in the "double pay" part, but don't want to get too jewy.

In the same vain, what would be a good Western European name for light cavalry specializing in mounted archery and scouting? Hobelar/Hobilar seems pretty close but maybe there are some German, French or Spanish units of that type.
>>
>>44306982
Well a German Scout is literally a Kundschafter, but you could also call them Schützenreiter or Berittene Schützen for horsearchers.
>>
>>44305921
Why not just something simple like swordsman, or you know, duelist.
>>44306982
Chasseur would fit I think.

>>44306969
I never said that. Stop making shit up.

I'm not sure about Chassuer, for a low fantasy setting relative to 15th century Europe its too anarchistic

No anon, don't call it landsknetch, their signature weapon was the katzbalger, call him something like Montante if you liked Zweihander.

Kek. Mounted archery wasn't really a thing in western europe desu, but perhaps sagittarii? It really only just means "archers", but you could rely on the zodiac imaginery for the horse element.

More blade to parry with, often parying hooks and extensive quillions.
If you look at most manuals of arms that actually dealt with Longsword (historical, what gamers would call a bastard or great sword) they had many defensive and entangling maneuvers.
>>
>>44305921

Samurai might be interesting, or maybe 'Bastard' named for the sword.
>>
>>44310016
>Bastard named for the sword
But the bastard sword is a totally different concept than the greatsword. Also although nodachis were a thing (but very rare and not the same concept as the greatsword either), it's not exactly what people usually associate with samurais.

Fucking this.
Why is there such an obsession with creating a new class for every minor difference in playstyle?
>>
Dreadnaught?

Even if it implies resilience or invulnerability through fortitude or bulk, the word literally means "dreads naught", "dreading nothing".

Blademaster, because of his skill with a blade?
Armsman, for the historical-military vibe? Guardian, a little more basic/obvious?
Paragon, as his skill with a blade is an exemplar of swordsmanship, and his role in defending others is worthy of praise?
>>
Praetorian?
>>
>>44306982
Yeoman
>>
>>44310322
because some people are such special snowflakes that they have an entire class dedicated to their special character's playstyle

I mean it's not as bad as being so unimaginative that they feel the need to project depth by creating a special snowflake race/half race for the character or anything

It's just a fighter or barbarian. Just be Guts from Berserk with a different name/face. That's essentially what you're rp'ing and you don't need a special name for it.
