It is 875 years since the Siege of Weinsberg ended, bloodlessly. Fought within the then-Holy Roman Empire, it was a decisive battle between the House of Welf and the House of Hohenstaufen. During it the Welfs for the first time used 'Kyrie Eleison' for their party cries. The Hohenstaufens used the 'Strike for Gibbelins' war cry.

On the death of Lothar II in 1137, the Welf Henry the Proud, heir of the patrimony of his deceased father-in-law, and possessor of the crown jewels, stood boldly forward as a candidate for the imperial dignity. But the local princes, opposing him, elected the Hohenstaufen Conrad III in Frankfurt, on February 2, 1138. When Conrad gave the Duchy of Saxony to Count Albert the Bear, the Saxons rose in defence of their young prince, and Count Welf of Altorf, the brother of Henry the Proud, began the war.

Exasperated at the heroic defence of the Welfs, Conrad III had resolved to destroy Weinsberg and imprison its defenders. He however suspended the last assault, after negotiating a surrender which granted the women the right to leave with whatever they could carry on their shoulders. The women eschewed their possessions, and carried their husbands on their shoulders. When the king saw what was happening he laughed and accepted the women's clever trick, saying that a king should always stand by his word. This became known as the "Loyal Wives of Weinsberg" (Treue Weiber von Weinsberg) episode. The castle ruins are today known as Weibertreu ("Wifely Loyalty") in commemoration of the event.

RCR_colour.jpg
355 KB, 830x930
Today is the 132nd birthday of the Royal Canadian Regiment. The regiment consists of four battalions, three in the Regular Force and one in the Primary Reserve (militia). The RCR is the senior infantry regiment in the Regular Force, but its 4th Battalion (formerly the London and Oxford Fusiliers) is ranked 11th in the order of precedence among infantry regiments in the Primary Reserve.

The RCR was originally authorized as the Infantry School Corps on 21 December 1883, and established its first three company stations at Fredericton, New Brunswick; St Jean, Quebec; and Toronto, Ontario. In 1887 a fourth Company was authorized and the next year was established at London, Ontario. Now consisting of three Regular Force battalions and one Reserve Force battalion, the regiment's four battalions are now stationed in Ontario and New Brunswick. With many of its soldiers drawn from Ontario and the Atlantic Provinces in recent decades, the regiment maintains a general connection as the "local" infantry regiment for eastern Canada.

The RCR maintains a Regimental Headquarters in Petawawa, Ontario, which has no operational command role but handles regimental affairs outside the responsibility of the individual Battalions. The Royal Canadian Regiment Museum is located within historic Wolseley Hall in London, Ontario. Wolseley Barracks in London has been continuously occupied by some element of the regiment since construction of Wolseley Hall was completed in 1888. At various times Wolseley Barracks has been the home of the Regimental Headquarters, the 1st and 2nd Battalions, and remains the home of the 4th Battalion today.

Does anybody have experience with Lion Rampant?
>>
>>44289798
I've never played it but one anon gave it a memorably bad review some threads back that became memetic. Their biggest issue was with the activation system; their force had sat on its arse for the whole game while the enemy sauntered over and slaughtered them.

>>

>their force had sat on its arse for the whole game while the enemy sauntered over and slaughtered them.
This was more common than you think in medieval and pike/shot period.

Units had to wait for orders via a rider. Sometimes the rider never came, and units ended up standing around all day doing nothing.

My definition of fun involves laughing at historical accuracies like this. I enjoy when things go badly in a realistic way. These are wargames after all, and war isn't usually fair or even. Winning isn't as important as having fun along the way.
>>
>>44290851
I am aware of this, I think the pip
system in DB(x) covers it well. But IIRC anon did not seem to have a lot of fun with the experience. As it happens there are quite a few blogs around that reviewed it, try googling up some AARs.

When it's about big battles, maybe, but Lion Rampant covers small skirmishes. When the enemy is walking ten meters from you, and in your general direction, you don't just stand around, you fucking shoot them. And if you don't shoot them, the rest of your gang doesn't do anything either.
>>
>>44296428
Ah I see. Yes definitely for a skirmish level game you want each soldier to be able to act individually, and ideally you only use orders to "boost" certain men: make them do something extra or give them a morale boost, etc.

Skirmish games shouldn't really have limited command control, or you'll get to chess tier
>>
>>44297516
>or you'll get to chess tier
You don't need a 8+ in chess to activate a peasant.

But yeah, you've managed to sum up mynegative feelings towards the game without a single "fuck".

>Having to roll to activate
ok now I just straight up hate this system.

I can understand having to roll to activate in, say, a 30 years war setting , but not in a skirmish game...

I wrote a TYW last year that used playing cards for unit activation. Each player was dealt 5 cards at the start of the game, and then 1 card each turn. Number cards allowed units to be moved, and face cards allowed charges to be made. Only the movement was command-controlled, all units could shoot all the time, and units could elect to "join combat" with a normal move, but would get no charge bonuses.

It worked well, meant you couldn't move your entire army all the time, but could still give important orders to whichever unit needed them.
>>
>>44298511
Best part: if you fail an activation roll, your turn ends.

According to my notes, Vallejo German Camo Dark green (model colour) with 50% Khaki (game colour) and flat (model colour) Flat Green.

Go with late cold war if you can, Moderns on the large scale, well, there's a lot of game changing technology. And time lags on equipment for everyone else without it that leaves it at the level of late cold war.

I've always understood the land battles of the RJW to be gory blunders, human-wave attacks on entrenched positions like a dress rehearsal for World War One. Certainly it's notorious for the incompetence of the Russian generals, and the Japanese ones didn't distinguish themselves either. I remember there was a RJW campaign in the Age of Rifles vidya many years back, and it was one meatgrinder after another.
>>
>>44310237
That misses a few details.

> Fleet loses all contact with the Kamchatka on approach to Tangiers
> Eventually shows up after several days, claims to have engaged three Japanese warships, firing over 300 shells
> Actually fired at a Swedish merchantman, a German trawler, and a French schooner.

> Later, fleet leaving Tangiers
> One ship's anchor severs the underwater telegraph cable, removing the entire city's communication with Europe for four days.
>>
>>44310360
Other gems;

> In response to repeated 'sightings' of Japanese submarines and reports of mines, Rozhestvensky orders that 'no vessel of any sort must be allowed to get in amongst the fleet'.
> Two fishermen approach the fleet, get fired upon. Because the gunners were so appalling, they make it alive.
> They were carrying a personal message to Rozhestvensky from the Tzar informing him of his promotion to Vice-Admiral.

> After Dogger Bank incident
> Fleet docks at Vigo, Spain
> Rozhestvensky leaves behind the officers responsible for firing on the trawlers, in an attempt to calm the diplomatic situation
> Also takes the opportunity to leave behind one Captain Klado, who was not really to blame for Dogger Bank, but whom Rozhestvensky simply didn't like very much.
> Klado ended up being recalled to St. Petersburg to organise reinforcements for the squadron, sends only old and obsolete ships as revenge.

> To raise morale, the crew stop off on the coast of Africa to collect 'exotic animals' as pets
> Including crocodiles and poisonous snakes
> Fleet becomes a bizzare floating zoo as the animals are left to roam free on deck.
> Around this time, the refrigeration system on one of the supply ships breaks down, a lot of rotting meat is jettisoned from the ship.
> Fleet spends some time being pursued by sharks.

> At port in Madagascar, morale low because of disease and shit.
> Suddenly a supply ship arrives!
> Carrying 12,000 pairs of fur-lined boots and winter coats
> These were considered necessary supplies for men currently sailing through Equatorial Africa.

> During gunnery practice, one ship's torpedo manages to circle around and head back towards the fleet, causing the ships to scatter in panic.

> Fleet intercepts the mail ship Gortchakoff whilst crossing the Indian Ocean
> Hooray! Letters from home!
> Ship is carrying letters the men sent themselves from Madagascar a month previously.
>>

No they aren't, Part of the reason I've played RJW naval battles and not the land battles.

Supposedly there was some good maneuver warfare on land though, with cavalry and mass infantry formations. HMGs were a thing though, so bound to be some shocks as cavalry get fucked by an MG position.

Also representing the incompetence of the generals would be fun and hilarious. I'm thinking about limited command control, or maybe a deck of "Awful Orders" that must be issued each turn.

Trying to get into napoleonics, but i don't know where to start. I have just read some ospreys books. What are some good rules set for nap? What about the scale and size of battles? 1/72 seems to be a good choice but i feel it is too big for the battles of napoleonic wars.
>>
>>44323137
1:72 is a really good scale. Cheaper than 15mm metals (sometimes cheaper than 10mm too), tons of sets and variety...

For rules, if you like lots of troops, Lasalle is fine. You'll need a great number of figures, but with HaT, Italeri and so forth, you'll still be off pretty cheaply.
>>
>>44323137
Frankly I think 1/72 is too big, but that all comes down to personal preference and a little bit what sort of army you want to command, and that also affects rules.

For example if you wanted to play a division sized engagement, Lasalle and 1/72 would make a great choice, but if you wanted to play a whole army engagement I think 6/10mms would be a better choice and you would want rules like Blucher or Napoleons Battles or something.

I've done Napoleonics in 10mm recently which I really liked, and I'm doing some in 6mm which I really like as well. Theres an Anon on here with a very nice 1/72 collection so really there is no wrong answer.

As for rules we need to know what sort of battle you are after.

I have three recommendations for people wanting to get into Napoleonic wargaming but who know nothing about the period. The first is a very good, basic breakdown of the various armies, how they were organised, rudimentary tactics, and so on. It's a great casual introduction to the whole thing from a wargaming perspective, the closest thing I think you could get to a set of generic army lists.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/59ddblmhw9bcuw1/Napoleonic+Armies+-+A+Wargamer's+Campaign+Directory+1805+to+1815.pdf

The second book is dated, being nearly 40 years old now, but I still consider it one of the best of its type. In his trademark eccentric fashion Bruce Quarrie gives a great breakdown of everything a Napoleonic wargamer would need to know. His rules system is really outdated now, but his discussion of how he designed it is still valid.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/yz48dg5v3r4fyse/Napoleon's+Campaigns+In+Miniature.pdf

The third is a really well-illustrated casual study from the "Fighting Techniques" series, covering the whole era in detail including stuff like artillery and naval warfare. It is very entry-level, perfect for beginners but far too basic for a more specialized reader.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/j1a9oh3g2726iyq/Fighting+Techniques+of+the+Napoleonic+Age.pdf

Beyond that are the obligatory Ospreys, and the Napoleonic/References folder has all sorts of more detail materials.

I used to play and love Shako but it's a little archaic and abstract for a new gamer I think, so I join the endorsement of Lasalle.

Doing a bit of research into the Russo-Japanese land wars. Pretty much just taking notes from the Osprey at the moment. Anyone know some systems for this conflict that aren't naval? Would love to see how others handle this war.

Supposedly MGs were excellent on the attack: They'd move them up to support an infantry attack, firing in enfilade and in a fire suppression role, often from as far as 1000yds away, while the infantry used this covering fire to advance. definitely need to have this use of MGs as part of the dynamic. Units would need to be suppressed by heavy fire, like any good system I guess.

Prepping some other stuff after playing another 50-point game of Team Yankee yesterday.
I was using Soviet T-72 tanks (a full company divided 1/3/3/3) supported by Shilkas and 2S1 Gvozdikas vs a US force of M1 Abrams (1/2/2) supported by M901 ITVs and a pair of Cobras. It was my opponent's first game, but he grasped things quite well.
Victory was mine, although I'll give most credit for that to the dice gods; I was rolling well above average while his rolls were abysmal.

One thing to really note from that game: that 80cm range on the Shilka vs aircraft still gives you a huge bubble, especially if you position them centrally on a normally-sized table.
I accidentally moved them close enough to the Cobras to shoot at them on my second turn. That was kind of a pleasant surprise, except for my opponent.

After that game, another local player who had been watching us and wanted to try some proper games borrowed my force and played two more games against my opponent.
Things went pretty well, even though both of them had never played a game with the system before that day. They both do play Flames of War, though.

I really like the game system so far. Units are mobile, weapons are lethal and maneuver is the name of the game.
From what I can find about late Cold War combat doctrine, the game models it decently well without getting bogged down in hyperdetailed special rules, which is a problem I see with many modern warfare games.

The only issue I have so far is that US armoured forces are very fragile morale-wise at 50 points, which is a direct consequence of the high points value of the M1 Abrams. That should become less of a problem as we scale up to 100 points, the default size for an evening-filling game, though.

It's honestly a point about the game's design that I entirely agree with; a game that can easily stop a player having any actions within their turn due to failing a roll is really bad game design. Limiting overall actions is not too bad a thing but it really has to be managed carefully.

The game does not manage it carefully.

Their minikits are as hard as it can get. As it's thinner than your average 28mm, it can be a bit more brittle. Not surprising anon, it's pretty fucking inaccessible to everyone. One the one hand it expects the viewer to be fluent in the language and culture of the WW2 British Army, and on the other it's staged in a really confrontational Brechtian style that's all very arty and avant-garde but renders the whole thing incomprehensible. I've watched it several times, I enjoy it despite its many faults. I love the subversive humour, but it's very much a Vietnam-era anti-war movie with all that entails.

I see. I watched it in german when i was a kid. That didn't help i suppose.

Chaps, since you are more reliable than my Google skills most of the time, I'd like to ask for information on the M60 in Vietnam.

How were they employed? In the Ambush Valley supplement for FoF, it's rather vague, and I've found mentions of it employed as a separate weapons team (gunner+loader). How was it used in 'nam? As a SAW, or as a support weapon?

Thanks in advance for the help.

hey guys, first of all merry christmas!
second of all, I've not come here for a long time, stopped playing historical wargames after the club I went to shut down.
I want to restart bolt action with some bersaglieri.
is the build an army set on warlord games website good? and are the models good too?
>>
>>44378672

thats how the models look like

http://store.warlordgames.com/collections/italy/products/italian-bersaglieri-squad

There are minis with different heads (sunhats) available too, but the poses are the same.

The Armybuilder is great deal generally speaking, some armies benefit more than others though.

>>
>>44380302
'ppreciated, pardner. Hopefully I'll find the answers there, but after some more reading the M60 gunners were either kept in their own weapons squad, or used to fill up holes within squads along with their MGs.
>>
>>44380380
No TO&E survives contact with infantry
Especially ones on a prolonged campaigns.
>>
>>44380628
And especially in 'nam.

I'll probably start with a standard TO&E for the US army or something similar - HQ, 2-3 squads, each with 2 4-men fireteams, and a squad leader with an M79 armed grunt. Plus a fourth squad with the 3 M60s (prolly in 3 fireteams, each with 3 men). Not sure if it's correct, but it sounds it'll give me a nice platoon to play with.

Army builder is good, but you get two (iirc) boxes of infantry in the deal, so of you get plastic minis that'd be 2x30 minis, metal 2x10, and bersaglieri are metal, so if that's the army you want it's the best you're gonna get but somebody using it for German grenadiers for example would get three times as many infantry.

Vehicles, command figs and weapons teams will not have this discrepancy, just rank and file infantry.
>>
>>44386082
Nations with no plastics available get to choose 4 boxes of infantry though.

What do you guys think about having a skirmish wargame having alternate-activation (similar to LOTR SBG for example, which means, everyone moves, then everyone shoots, then everyone fights, instead of I move, I shoot and I fight, and then you do), but with a twist.

Everyone does 1 action (shooting, moving, climbing, hiding, using abilities, rallying troops, etc), first starting with one player's units and then the other.
After that, everyone does 1 action once again, by the same order, and after that, both resolve their melee engagements.

The good thing about this is that you can shoot and at the same time charge, or shoot before you charge, whatever, and then move away. Or different combinations, but not necessarily "move then shoot".

Any game does that?
>>
>>44390921
Action points based systems tend to be like that. Reaper's Warlord is like that. Separate figure activation, all of them have two actions which they can use however they want.
>>
>>44392289
I meant something more akin to 'phases' but with different actions occurring in these phases.

instead of Player A moves, Player B moves, Player A shoots, player B shoots, etc.

It's, Player A does 1 action with each unit, Player B does 1 action with each unit, Player A does another action with each, Player B again, and then both fight in Melee combat

It's in its box as I won't play/paint it for a good few months. The rules for both games can be downloaded from their website for free.

Miniatures are decent enough, being true 25mm (can't remember what scale that is offhand) the details are very fine. I've only got 3 broken yari out of the whole lot though.

I'm liking the command and colours system more than art of tactic.

Generally the build an army deal is pretty good. There is a 10% discount going on with the voucher: Bad Santa

Bersaglieri is a rare army.. which means higher production costs. If you want to snap up a great deal try fallschirmjagers or grenadiers which both got nice new plastic kits.

Since you are posting on HWG on 4Chan i would say fuck the deal and get that rare army and just generally be an awesome opponent.. because who wants to face another nazi twat?

Hey, the pastebin for the "List of Historical Tactical, Strategic, and Military Drill treatises" doesn't seem to be working.
I'm specifically looking for pre-WW1 Imperial German wargames. Reading Tuchman's Guns of August (I know, I know, it contains many inaccuracies, exaggerations, and simplifications) and I can't help but want to reenact the thinking of von Kluck.

Correct, the DB(x) games and Hordes of the Things were written by the WRG guys. I used to play a lot of DBM years ago, just using handmade bases on drawn-up maps. Haven't touched it in a long while, but surely someone on /hwg/ still plays it today.

>>44405072
That and the Vietcong box are an excellent set. The US forces are even molded in jungle green. Some of them are so characterful; also a few could double as merc-types for moderns games. I used some as a kid to make a Rambo: First Blood Pt 2 game! I particularly love the casualty figure, the beret-clad SF nco with the M16/M203, and the crouching bloop gunner.

I have the Revell reissue in sand yellow as you can see on the base. I plan to do a headswap on the beret armed figures to a helmeted head, and use them as squad leaders with the underslung grenade launchers given to them to test them. Sadly there's a bit too much M60s in the box compared to M79s, so I need to get the Pegasus set too. The shotgun armed blokes are really good looking too.
