New OOTS is up, faster than the previous one.

So THAT'S what the teleport orb was for...
>>
>>44246014
Really? the council made up entirely of divine casters are going to allow a magical loophole like that?
>>
>>44246045
They did say "pass through these arches".

Technically, you aren't when you're teleporting.
>>
>>44246014
>I brought snacks now

Don't clerics have the ability to magic up food?
>>
>>44246099
they also have the ability to jump through planes and explode vampires
>>
>>44246014
Of course, the fact that he said it out loud now means it's not going to work out as planned.
>>
>>44246014
So, does it mean that all good clerics of the gods that don't want to end the world can go to the dwarven elders and dominate them themselves?

WOOOOOOW.
>>
>>44246130
He's going to bring death and destruction to the dwarven lands. Sounds like this is his shot.
>>
>>44246142
I don't know if you get this, but Hel is the only one who is actively trying to subvert everything. The rest of the gods, even the evil ones, abide by the Godsmoot's laws.
>>
>>44246014
>inb4 Ritch forgets that this would invalidate Durkon/Hel's vote because this is influencing another voter
>>
>>44246170
They need more CG gods, then.

This kind of bullshit is exactly why CG exists.
>>
>>44246170
But it means that their representatives can do just that, right? Either Durkon and Hel are cheating and should be disqualified, or dominating people into voting is legit, and all the representatives can do that. Which is it?
>>

Do clerics even have access to dominate?

>>
I'm surprised the hall isn't warded against teleportation just to prevent any kind of screwing around with the vote.
>>
>>44246345
Didn't they build the whole thing in a day or something like that?

I imagine the hall probably just contains enough to be comfortable, since they no one really expects a vote on 'Should we destroy the fucking world?' to take long enough to permit that kind of fuckery.

Thog edit when?
>>
>>44246345
I'm hoping he tries to teleport out, only for wards to stop him, while the priest of Odin calls him an idiot for thinking that would work when they have fucking Loki around who would spot that kind of loophole a mile away.
>>
I swear to God this is the lamest most drawn out OOTS plot so far. The final fight with nylon is going yo take ten panels over one year of all time to cover, whereas the first battle took, what, four?

Can't divine casters of that level teleport?

This is the plot, dude. The whole point of the moot is that by the time they get to the final area, Xykon set up shop and the heroes need to dislodge him.

This arc is a huge stall because a huge stall is what needed to happen.
>>
>>44246224

A better question is, don't Dwarves have fucking racial bonuses to all saves?
>>
>>44246547
Not to mention there's no way for them to contact him, since Roy is also not allowed to leave and I assume any spells to communicate with people outside are forbidden as well.
At this point we're just waiting to see what Belkar will end up doing.
>>
>>44246581
yep. and the chiefs should be mid level at worst, so they'd have a reasonable chance of making their saves if the plot didn't demand they fail with no repercussions for Durkula
>>
I don't like this arc.

I want to see Xykon do awesome shit, not silly vampire dwarves.
>>
>>44246623
To be fair, vampires get Dominate at-will. Those Dwarves are gonna fail their save EVENTUALLY.
>>
>>44246581
Dwarves have a +2 racial bonus to saves against spells and spell-like abilities which is awesome.

Unfortunately, the vampire's domination ability is a supernatural ability.

On the other hand, as elder, most of those dwarven leaders ought to have at least a passable wisdom score.

For awhile it seemed like a legitimate reason to stall the Gate plot, and in a lot of ways this is the story arc that he originally wanted to write.
We might also be a bit hasty in damning this castrated Cleric UN because we don't know how they'll react to a fucking Vampire going to fuck with their super important voting system that determines the fate of the whole world.
I know they said they have to stay and wait but maybe every-fucking-god-in-the-setting might be able to do something when informed of the treachery.

I can't really defend this stall beyond that.
If they just say to let it happen and its okay then everyone is fucking retarded and its amazing this world lasted this long at all.

It's already a little retarded that Hel would automatically get all those Dwarven souls in the first place, dying to a disease and dying fighting are things that could easily overlap. Like you can die fighting Cancer, you can die fighting the destruction of a planet.
If not, then how the fuck does Thor get any souls at all without starting a war every now and then?
How does a mostly isolated people living in the distant mountains get killed often enough in combat that Hel is already not the most powerful God ever?

Why are they even holding this vote? Why don't they just tell Hel to go fuck herself and just smite Xykon now?
Go shape stone around the open tears and cast some permanent force-walls, go make some new gates on the broken tears.

Pretty sure they won't be getting to the gate in this book though.

There's a pattern.

First, third and fifth books are about the gates.

Second and fourth books aren't about the gates.

And this will be the sixth book.

They have ranged attack spells.
They have cure wound spells that would damage a Vampire directly.
They have spells to summon, possibly undead, things that could cross the barrier or have natural ranged attacks
They could dispel the barrier, blast them with sunlight, blast them with fire
They could send and anchor them in the Plane of Positive Energy
Any of them could potentially Resurrect Durkon or douse the area in an anti-magic field.

One of the bigger offenders was buffy, for example.

No, Wedon, it's not clever to have someone invincible to the weapons of man suddenly blown up by an RPG, you flaming faggot.
>>
>>44248151
Wait, could you elaborate on that, for those who have not seen buffy?
>>
>>44248236
Ancient Demon impervious to any weapon.

The prophecy was like 500 years old and weapons sucked then so they just blow up him up with an RPG.
>>
>>44248236
A demon was said to be "impervious to any weapon forged by man". Buffy realized that the prophecy was written in like 1200 something.

So, she shoots him with a rocket launcher. Demon explodes.
>>
>>44248236
As >>44248303 and >>44248327 wrote, the demon was impervious to weapons forged by man.
The RPG was considered to be manufactured or something like that, which doesn't count as forged by man, thus it could kill the demon.
>>
>>44248303
>>44248327
So... According to my ability to do math, Buffy is set in the 18th century?
>>
>>44248327
grenades are machine-made, not forged by man. It's the same situation as Macbeth's "no man of woman born" or the Witch-King's "no man shall harm me"
>>
>>44248236

There's a monster in the second series who's said by medieval tomes from the last time he was chopped into peices and stored away (wihtout killing him) to be "immune to human weapons" and it took some magical bullshit to split him up.

Then on the day he's going to perform his first big massacre at a mall, Buffy whips out a rocket launcher that her support group had stolen from a military base and blows him up in a single shot.

there's a second instance of this happening in the next season, when a monster who is functionally and practically immortal before he morphs into a giant wyrm at the end of season - said giant wyrms are supposedly unkillable by anything short of a volcanic eruption. So Buffy got the wyrm into a school that she'd FILLED with military grade high explosives, tricked it into winding its entire body through all the main hallways, then blew up the school, which killed it

One webcomic had a huge monster that ate dragons and could only be killed, according to the old legends at least, only by reflecting the light from full moon into its eyes from a silver mirror on [some day that only comes once per century.]

They killed it with rockets and then talked about how the old myths really need to be updated.
>>
>>44248736
Huh? The symbol of insanity would have a minimum DC of 22 for being an 8th-level spell, and Xykon definitely has more Charisma than 18. Plus having it bounce around for several hundred times in the room and thus forcing the save several hundred times (which is dubious to work, but Burlew wanted to try such rules abuse into the comic for the sake of joking too) ought to be able to overcome all those low-level paladin's Will saves.

Placing money on belkar turning into a vampire and killing vamp durkon by getting through shield.
>>
>>44249766
Wouldn't he just get a Hel spirit stuck in him, though?
>>
>>44249834
Durkon is beholden to Hel because he's a dead dwarf, not just because he's a vampire.
>>
>>44249766
How will he rise faster than 3 days, though? Unless he gave the staff to another one of his vampires?
>>
>>44249766
Will be kinda hard, since if Belkar lets himself get killed to awaken as a vampire, he would be a thrall to the vampire that killed him. Also, he would first need to be buried to rise as a vampire. And lacking the sunlight protection spell, he would burn and then turn to ashes during the day.
>>
>>44249854
Okay, fair enough. You're right, it isn't some kind of vampiric lineage thing, because Malak had a Nergal spirit.

So why are the non-dwarf vampires till obeying Durkon, like that goliath out front gearing up to fight Balkar? Is it just a vampire's spawn obeying it's master? What kind of spirit inhabits that goliath body? I suspect Belkar would still obey Durkon even if he doesn't get a Hel spirit.
>>
>>44246274
You're forgetting that she'll still have dominated all the council, who pretty much run everything. She's still going to bring death and ruin to the dwarves, even if it isn't the way she wanted.

>Is it just a vampire's spawn obeying it's master?

Belkar also was looking for an item to help against domination.
>>
>>44250089
Does a vampire's mastery over their thrall count as domination, though?
>>
>>44249766
I think it's more likely we're not going to see him again until he knocks Durkula out of the antilife shell with the hurled head of the goliath. His prowess with throwing things was established during his fight with his previous nemesis, Miko, and his willingness to use severred body parts as tools was established with his 'nemeses' before that, Yuk Yuk and Yik Yik.

>>44250107

Dwarves have high con, get an extra bonus against poison and maybe also disease on top, and are long lived. It's more likely for them to die violently than to die naturally, especially since while their mountain halls are generally distant from other civilized races, they are in a hotbed of activity for their racial enemies: goblinoids and giants.

Isn't Xykon AT the last gate already?

I thought Roy was going to kill Durkula here and end this hanging plot thread, but it's really starting to look like this is gonna be a THING, and I'm really wondering how much Redcloak's dragging his feet if he doesn't finish the ritual by the time this plot arc is wrapped up if they take much longer.

It's like, they don't really have TIME to have another arc about fighting Hel's plan rather than resolving this HERE and now, but they're also boned if they fight Xykon without Durkon, so where's he going with this?
>>
That's a pretty boring way to wrap it up. Also a boring way to show the halfling was alive
>>
>>44248428
So your complaint is that the medieval slayers didn't try strapping him to a petard before using magic? Because from what I've seen of Buffy, magic is way less dangerous than medieval explosives
>>
>>44255687
Xykon will have to deal with all kinds of high-level monsters, and then probably have to somehow overcome the last defenses at the gate itself, which the halfling chick will hopefully not have mentioned in her diary.
>>
>>44256741
Yeah, I think the Buffy example wasn't really that bad. The demon was perceived to be invincible TO the people of THAT era. People from those times don't have the level of technological weaponry we have now, so I don't find it a stretch to think that 'invincible' from ye olde standard might just be a tad different, i.e. is not so much it's invincible, just that they don't have the level of weaponry needed for their time so it might as well be considered invincible for them.

I feel like in OotS' world the council of dwarven elders should #shrek two mid-level vampires.

He's certainly epic level, and does have enough spells, but he doesn't really make efficient use of them, and some of the monsters could very well be resistant or even immune to most of his spells that likes to use, like meteor swarm, energy drain, and other stuff.
He will certainly power through in the end, but it might take a while, when he has to retreat, rest, and regain spells to overcome the next deadly trap and monster with whatever brute force method he normally employs.

>>
>>44258695
Not saying that he's dumb. But he's impatient enough, and as a sorcerer, he does tend to fall back on using damage-dealing spells often enough.
Also, does he really have any undead-creating spell except for animate dead, which can only create lame-ass skeletons and zombies? So far, the better kinds of undead had to be created by Redcloak and Tsukiko.

Also, my memory of dominate is kinda fuzzy, but can't you still not force someone to do something that is against their nature with it?

A vampire can crush an opponent’s will just by looking onto his or her eyes. This is similar to a gaze attack, except that the vampire must use a standard action, and those merely looking at it are not affected. Anyone the vampire targets must succeed on a Will save or fall instantly under the vampire’s influence as though by a dominate person spell (caster level 12th). The ability has a range of 30 feet.

>>
>>44260650
He's also got O'chul and Lien up there who have had several weeks to prepare defenses against him. Now I'm not expecting two mid-high level Paladins to stop him, but they can probably slow him down. Especially since O'chul is aware of most of Xykon and Redcloaks capabilities.

>>
>>44260689

Much as I like OotS's Shaft, I imagine the best he'd be able to do is survive, as opposed to slowing Team Evil down.

So, for those familiar with D&D lore, what's the most likely result of Nale's death? Will he turn up again as some kind of demon, or is he gone for good?
>>
>>44260725
Almost certainly already had his soul chewed up and turned into a maggot demon.

>>
>>44260725

Right now Sabine is likely just trying to find his soul or somethin'
>>
>>44260705
No, but it'd be funny if it was something other than a Warhorse. Like a Celestial Moose or something.

>>44260725
In most cases he'd appear in one of the Lower Planes as a Petitioner and have his soul tortured and broken down into its base energy that would be used to feed the creatures there. Since he was fairly high level the husk left behind could then become a low ranking fiend.

Sabine might have altered the process though, maybe by claiming his soul directly in which case his fate would belong solely to her as long as she could hold onto it.
>>
>>44260725
Standard is for his soul becoming a petitioner which is then turned into a low rank fiend.
OotS seems to have something different with the afterlives, with people remaining themselves instead of turning into petitioners (since IIRC they do that in the good afterlives too, it's just they do it in Good Ways there), so there may be a LE afterlife for him - either ETERNAL TORMENT or The Best Thing Ever for LE.
ALso possible is Sabine pulling some strings with her bosses to keep him being him in some form (even if he ends up with a fiendish body or something)
>>
>>44260782
>>44260795
>>44260797
Did he ever mention selling his soul to Sabine? It seems like something they might do.
>>
>>44260797
Rich hinted that Nale wasn't actually Lawful though in some of his forum posts. So he's more than likely in either the NE or CE afterlife.

CE would make the most sense, since Sabine is a Demon and would hold the most sway there.
>>
>>44260797
Actually, IIRC petitioners on most planes remain mostly themselves
It's just in the lower ones that you turn into a maggot with a face. Punishment and all that
Also at least in hell important/useful petitioners can be upgraded directly from petitioner to something more useful if they prove themself worthy
>>
>>44260797

Except that "the gods can destroy the universe as a last ditch move to stop either the tear being released or The Dark One getting his hands on it" is a fairly large plot issue that needs to be resolved first - only once the Gods have decided to not blow up the world can the plot with Xykon and Red Cloak continue.
>>
So, how will the inevitable Redcloak vs Xykon going to be? Redcloak tries to backstab only to have Xykon revealing that he knew what shit he was trying to pull all along or Xykon doesn't actually know the truth but wins out of sheer epic level magic?
>>
>>44260448

Redcloak uses his Command Undead class skill to make Xykon do his bidding, Xykon only says "....Yes, Master..." but he secretly resisted the command through some obscure trinket or spell or feat. Hilarity ensues.

I thought it was you could command undead with up to twice your level in HitDice, but apparently
http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Turn_or_Rebuke_Undead#Commanded
>At any one time, the cleric may command any number of undead whose total Hit Dice do not exceed his level.

I was wrong.

The lich template doesn't grant any additional HD while granting a +4 Level Adjustement from the wiki I just consulted, so if Redcloak is within 4 levels of Xykon's level he could command him, I think. If Xykon was built like a Player Character and Redcloak doesn't have any feats or items that empower his Rebuking/Commanding Undead class skills.

-

At any rate, Xykon has a failsafe with the Monster in the Darkness
>>
>>44267410
>and those that would be destroyed are commanded.
>If you have twice as many levels (or more) as the undead have Hit Dice, you destroy any that you would normally turn.

I feel like Redcloak's plan won't be so direct. He's probably banking on the fact that once the ritual is completed he's in a "do what you must, I have already won" situation.
>>
>>44255687
WHY are you TALKING like THIS? Is this some sort of JOKE?
