Truly nothing I say will convice people otherwise will it?

Like, legit I was looking for art for a character and this was one of the closest I could get, I've never played FF4 so I don't have any context for Rydia, and I'm not ashamed to admit I changed the color of the dragon itself in the image because... god describing this character makes her sound like a mary sue... the character is a dragon bound to elven form.

Actually. That wasn't too bad.

There... is no system... I just make a LOT of... lets say literary characters and character concepts, and while some of them make the cut and I end up playing as them in a setting... she hasn't yet. They have backstories and stuff but that's about it... though if I did stat her... she would be the blinking high mobility rogue archetype with heavy use of acids and poisons(breath weapon translated) on two daggers(fangs and claws) and whose clothes gave protection as if leather(her scales and hide, toned down a bit cause I aint no munchkin, I'm one of those chuckleheads who insists on theme decks in MTG.)

>No System

I see why you were afraid of revealing your power level, free-form is an Ebola to structured tabletop RPGs.
Now if you played straight DnD I would recommend you either going Sorcerer, Rogue or refluffing a Warlock, but if you played Pathfinder there is a class that would represent this pretty well and it's a variant on the Summoner Class.
The Summoner class itself gives you a way to build a specific creature you can summon almost any time, building a dragon is enitrely possible.
The Symbiosis variant of Summoner lets you change yourself instead, you become a kind of super hero who can turn on all these different little evolutions. Essentially your character would become more Dragonlike overtime but still have a Human Form to revert to.

As for Rydia, I think you should give FF4 a try, particularly the DS version which is more challenging and has a more true translation.
Or if you want I will give you a quick synopsis on Rydia.

I went over the word limit twice so I'll just condense:

>FF4 is the first FF game with characters that have pre-determined roles and capabilities
>This is signifiant because in a lot of FF games everyone is generic and can do anything, so during story scenes they're actually not able to do anything in case you built them differently.
>You find Rydia after accidentally killing her mother. Your summon being killed while you're summoning results in your death
>Her Mother summoned the Mist Dragon to protect the village, but you just slaughter it wholesale.
>The Main Character and Dark Knight Cecil and his best friend Dragon Knight Kain didn't intend to kill anyone on this trip, but they were tricked by their King and the magic ring they're holding onto explodes and swallows Rydia's village in evil fire and fire monsters.
>Cecil tries to apologize but Rydia won't hear it and Kain starts talking politics and how they need to overthrow the King.
>Rydia gets pissed and summons a Titan that causes a massive Earthquake and splits Cecil and Kain apart.
>Now Cecil and Kain start at level 10 because they're big bad Knights, but Rydia starts at level 1 cause she's someones 10 year old daughter.
>Cecil and Rydia are stranded together on the wrong side of everything and have to wander around looking for support to overthrow and retake Baron
>Rydia doesn't trust Cecil at all until Cecil kills a bunch of Baron soldiers to protect her.
>At this point Rydia is pretty gifted and one of the few characters who can cast Black and White magic, but refuses to cast fire because it ruined her village.
>Eventually people talk her through it and she's able to melt some ice blocking your way later on
>If you play the DS version she slowly becomes more and more trusting of Cecil as events unfold in the menu where you can read everyones thoughts and they change at every major plot point.

>Eventually Cecil, Rydia and some others get on a boat with the intention of taking on the Kingdom of Baron
>But Leviathan, a giant sea serpent dragon, wrecks their ship and scatters everyone around the planet.
>Cecil ends up going to the Village he pillaged in the first part of the game to redeem himself
>Rydia ends up going to the Feymarch, where all of the Eidolions/Spirits/Summons lives and here she loses the ability to cast white magic in exchange for the ability to summon some serious shit. Some serious shit including the only Holy elemental summon in the game: The Mist Dragon.
>In the Ferymarch time moves way different and she ends up aging very quickly to the point where she's a grown adult when she returns to the plot
>Most of her plot from here has to do with recruiting more spirits and living up to her summoning heritage.

If anyone is listening, I would love some help as for some ideas on how to 'do' dragons in my setting.

I currently have no idea what they look like or what kind of dragon they are, but I do like wyrms and additionally I have a bit of a cosmology where humans (and potentially, dragons) are creations of the Volcano God on their planet. The idea is that humans and dragons could either be both his creations or somehow they rose together.

Still, I have no idea if I'm going to make dragons common or extinct, or what other details they have. Any ideas?
>>
>>44256970
Personally, I never saw the attraction of 'volcano gods'. Gods generally have some sort of specific purpose or impetus in mind. This one? Yeah he just makes some volcanoes. Then waits tens of thousands of years. Then maybe makes one erupt. Oh, and apparently can influence biological creatures?

To the subject: Start with basics and general outlines. Do you want them to be born of evolution or from the fingertips of an entity full-fledged? Is the evolution catalyzed by an entity or miraculously on its own?

From there, you can start molding the basics of what environments support dragons, and move onto characteristics based on environment, traits, size, all the good stuff.

Though, if they are all extinct anyway, I guess it's mostly just lore fluff?
>>
>>44257224
>Personally, I never saw the attraction of 'volcano gods'. Gods generally have some sort of specific purpose or impetus in mind. This one? Yeah he just makes some volcanoes. Then waits tens of thousands of years. Then maybe makes one erupt. Oh, and apparently can influence biological creatures?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. He's not 'really' a Volano God, that's just kind of like his thing. He's a planet. All the planets are Gods. He's really a God of the whole planet, and has life, water, weather and all of that, but is characterized by Volcanoes because they spew forth his blood from the earth in the form of magma; that kind of thing.
>>
>>44257411
>Planets are Gods.
Not a bad idea, reminds me of that one indie game where you control elemental giants on a tiny planet and try to co-exist with nature and humans and stuff. No idea what it was called.

So, with the magma being god-blood, I guess you could have dragons having learned how to adapt to lava and even use it inherently, eventually making their own biological imitations of volcanoes and magma to breathe fire. Unfortunately, that somewhat puts a damper on all non-fire based dragons since their obviously wouldn't be rolling around in magma god-blood to get water affinity, etc.

So, dragons are all fire-based and have their own subspecies that have variance but not big ones that dramatically change their archetypes? Live in and near tectonic activity zones where all the magma flows are richest? Slow, methodical, overwhelming, just like magma itself. Some measure of intelligence since they buffed up their own manner of fire breathing and hunting, but not sorcerer levels of intelligence (unless planet god here wants to influence that, too).

Hot? Cold? Something you can work with?
>>

That image is actually rather inspiring.
Imagine a Dragon that hoarded knowledge and wisdom, that personified prudence rather than greed and lust for gold.

Imagine that slithering about a dark and ancient library in which the adventurers had to find a tome including the true name of an ancient dead god they had to seal away. As the adventurers climb about mounds of old dusty tomes it hisses from the shadows, as prestidigitation lights the candles about it's face, it speaks:

Gold is naught but glitters,
Yet Rhymes are what for this snake slithers.
Word for word, word must be had for word in trade.
To leave here wiser, one must leave wisdom,
Such is the ancient laws that must be obeyed.

And in order to leave with a copy of the tome they need, they'll have to discuss philosophy, poetry, and their adventures with the dragon, as the dragon records any notable wisdom in a book on a lectern that's writing itself with an enchanted quill.

Is it great technically? Of course not. Even if Paolini wasn't as young as they tried to play it, it was still the first attempt of an inexperienced author, its going to have some issues.
That doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable. "Farmboy raises a dragon secretly and then Adventure" is an easy thing to like.

Because

1-it doesn't appeal enough to the masses, which is how a lot of good videogame ideas die
2- If it does have dragon, they are an enemy, non-character or flying bus for the party
3-If it is a romancable dragon they are always in human form, and most likely of the "I'm actually centuries old dragon" loli

that was actually a character concept Mercedes Lackey had for a book draft (I think unused, I don't know where the file is either... dammit) she let me peek at once.

Actually ended up with a similar concept myself.

Though that evolved to just dragons in general in my setting being avid collectors of anything that's "the best" of it's class.

This will naturally include a library of books, usually though dragons home in on 'first editions', or will kidnap the writers themselves.

>>44271359
odd issue with that is that dragons in mainstream culture tend to still be depicted as beasts or malevolent. Fuck, even Pone seems to see them as monsters with one character being the sole exception (and is doomed to never get laid because girl's show).

Closest I can think of to a popular game where a dragon shows romantic interest in humans is the Fire Emblem games I think?
>>
>>44271414
Full grown and terrifying, but still friendly, or at least not particularly hostile, dragons are the best.
There are plenty of good or friendly dragons, but they are never really dragons; they're like a half-dragon or a young dragon or something. If the "dragon" is cute and non-threatening, they're being friendly losses all impact.

Wandering through ominous caves, coming across an intimidating dragon's den, seeing a giant fire-breathing lizard, and then being offered to trade books with said monster is infinitely better.

it sort of depends on the dragon.

Generally though a kidnapped author is treated more like having the ultimate autographed copy. They're dragged out to clarify some points the dragon might not get on a story, or to show off to others.

Because dragons are pretty asocial outside very immediate family, this is usually "showing off" to prisoners or new people added to the collection.

Funfact: these habits mean dragons will sometimes kidnap princesses, not because of their beauty, but because they might be the best needleworker or best sandwich maker in the lands. Princesses everywhere are soon offended.

>1-it doesn't appeal enough to the masses, which is how a lot of good videogame ideas die
How would a dev get around that?
I'd think that if they played it like most romance options, it would be fine.
Romancing an alien or someone of the same sex isn't too mainstream, either, but it's done all the time with the same basic romance design. The romance is initiated by the player, meaning that if one did not want to have any alien/gay/dragon romance in their playthrough, all they need to do is not select certain dialogue options, and it would be like the game never had any of that programmed in it.

Additionally, if the idea of a dragon romance is considered REALLY non-mainstream and detrimental to the game's popularity, they could make it less obvious than other romance options. They could even make it more of a secret.
Really, that might be for the best. The dragon romance option being somewhat hidden and not blatantly thrown in your face as an option could just make it even better.

Sorry, I should have clarified.
I'm sure there are plenty of dating sims and similar low budget games with dragon romances, and I'm sure a lot of them are pretty good.
But I meant "why are there no large, popular, big budgeted games".
The lack of dragon romance in larger games confuses and frustrates me because they have had plenty of similarly weird or "non mainstream" things.

I think dragons as playable in general seem to have this aversion effect on developers. There is still not one game that basically lets you play as a dragon doing dragon things in a non-rail-shooter format besides Spyro.

As for romancing dragon-dragons... I guess dragons are seen as too bestial to romance despite the intelligence. Most Mass Effect aliens were pretty human-like, or their females were. (I'm honestly a little saddened that Japan hasn't gotten more into it thanks to the dragons as lolis thing)

While dragons are traditionally a personification of greed and wrath, I'd like to see them as other sins. Gluttony is easy enough, one that actually eats every person it can find, but I think a Pride dragon would be fucking sick; one determined to be the greatest, to show the whole world it's terrible majesty.

Yes, sorta mispoke though, it was about how dragons represent all 7 vices, not about different types of vice dragons

>Dragons are Prideful
They are powerful, they are grand, they are magnificent
Each and everyone of them believes they are the single most important being in the world

>Dragons are Envious
They have the grandest treasures and the greatest magic
Should something of their's pale in comparison to another's? Well someone should fix that...

>Dragons are Wrathful
Their rage is quick to gather, and slow to leave
Their egos are quick to bruise and few can stand against their power, cities may burn over the smallest slight

>Dragons are Greedy
Their hoards are grand, infinite and ever growing
Every dragon knows they own everything, or at least they should, woe to those who disagree

>Dragons are Lustful
They desire, more and more, and they take what they desire
Not just flesh but they also want more wealth, more power, more food, also there is a reason why there are so many half-dragons

>Dragons are Gluttonous
They demand their vices be fed, uncaring what is sacrificed to do so
They will burn a great trade hub for a few handfuls of gold, they will lay wast to field and storehouse for a meal for a meal. Why should they care if a few tiny lives are ruined?

>Dragons are Slothful
They care nothing for anything beneath them, and what is not beneath you when one is so grand?
They do not care, about the lives ruined, about cities burned, about dreams crushed, instead they sleep soundly in their dreamless sleep surrounded by proof of their magnificence

For The less serious/comedic version I do things a bit differently, I still play up the sin aspect but they're more along the lines of bored immortal than engine of destruction and sin or them being an extremely hedonistic (and powerful) hikikomori

>>44274620
>>44274690

>>
>>44274690
Did you make this up yourself?
>Greed
Wanting more than need, excessively. You got this more or less right with 'dragons knowing they own everything'. But then...

>Lust
>They desire, more and more, and take... not just flesh, also wealth...
No, lust is strictly a sexual thing. Wealth? Greed. Eating more and more food? Gluttony. This is shown in the next point.

>Gluttony
>They demand their vices be fed... do shit for gold... razing storehouses for food
No, gluttony is strictly the act of eating excessively. Razing shit to the ground and murdering in order to get your food is simply adding selfish and uncaring to the list of character traits.

>Sloth
>Don't care about how many lives/cities/dreams destroyed on their way to magnificence
No... sloth just means really, really, really fucking lazy. Like, so lazy you don't get up to eat until you're starving, just staying in bed half-asleep not doing anything.

But hey, at least you got Envy right and didn't mix that up with jealousy. You get points for that.
>>
>>44275074
Well, I did a bit of research on the subject of the sins, in the original context there were actually 8, with the sin of vainglory (boasting about oneself basically) later being folded up into pride, in the older christian versions the sins were a bit different than their modern counterpart

Lust was about desire, not just sexual but any sort of unwarranted and/or destructive desire, both bloodlust and sexual lust fell under that sin

Gluttony was about waste, not simply eating excessively, being a picky eater and eating unnecessarily fancy dishes was also under the sin of gluttony not just gorging oneself

Sloth was about not laziness, it was lack of interest, not caring about things was the sin regardless of how it manifested

A few of the other sins were different from the modern, simplified versions as well, greed was about wanting to possess things and not being able to separate a want from a need, pride was a sin only when it was undeserved, envy and wrath are basically the same though wrath did not cover justified anger, getting pissed at a crime was not a sin

>>
>>44275706

>>
>>44275875
Oh, well, like..

Take sloth for example. You say it's about lack of interest. If you apply that to the previous post and say that it's technically slothful for the dragon to be callous to everything he steps on to become magnificent, I feel like that's a cop out. He's 'disinterested' about some things but not others, when the sins seem to be more general, overwhelming features (usually).

Might also argue that since he cares about being magnificent, he does technically care about stepping on peoples lives to become magnificent, in a twisted way. But then I'd just be pedantic, wouldn't I?
>>
>>44276041
Eh, sorta, like I said >>44274708, that's the shorter version of it, the longer version I couldn't find also went on about how dragons are a mix of vices, the exact amount and ones they prefer to feed varying by dragons but even the good ones are heavily motivated by their vices. That post I made is just generic to dragons on a whole, some would be extremely lazy fuckers, some would be full on WORSHIP ME MAMMAL, but most are some degree of all seven with a few they focus on above the others

In a modern setting, even mountain-sized dragons wouldn't be too difficult. Modern fighter jets would tear it to shreds, what with their missiles and ridiculously large guns.

This is barring any bullshit about impenetrable hides, of course. Although I sort of think an impenetrable hide would just mean that the dragon gets to dire of massive internal bleeding due to trauma instead.

The Draconomicon 3.5 splatbook. It's actually what got me interested in gaming in general.

My oma (grandma) got it for me one christmas many years ago, basically on a lark. Guess she thought it was a kids book or something. Still one of my favorite game books. I have it on my shelf, right behind me.

This will be my first christmas without her. Maybe I'll give it a re-read for her.

Miss you, oma.
