Devlinson is exhausted. His eyes are red-rimmed and his white shirt is rumpled, the front carelessly smeared with tobacco ash.

“Big night on the town, Dev?”

The olderman wipes his face with his hand, pulling down his lower lip. Peeling it back reveals a misaligned row of nicotined stained teeth. Brown rot festers visibly in the crevices.

“Yeah,” he says, lifting his eyes to meet yours, “You could say- aw, Christ.”

His gaze is fixated on your nose or maybe more honestly, on your schnozz.

“It’s too early for this, Vince. Take it off.”

“I… I can’t.”

“Oh God.”

“I’m hoping the swelling will go down eventually.”

“Me too Vince, me too. I hope you didn’t spend a lot of money on that.”

You keep your silence. You’ve been trying to convince yourself that your little makeover isn’t really that bad since this morning, when you climbed out of bed and undid the bandages in front of the Shan family’s bathroom mirror.

"Shit, I'm sorry Vince."

"It's fine," you say, gathering up bits and pieces of information and absorbing scraps of the day’s job as you go.

“Looks like I’m going to Ma Wan Island today, huh Dev? That should be nice, the weather’s grea-”

Mid syllable you give Devlinson’s desk a sharp kick and watch as he nearly jolts out of his chair. That’s a nervous reaction, not a hungover one. And with all the cigs he’s obviously been smoking, he must be genuinely stressed by something. Considering how cool he was under pressure from the corporate inquisitors when they were after you, the issue must be pretty serious indeed.

“Jesus, Vince. Don’t scare me like that.”

He’s clutching his chest.

>Shit, just tell me what’s really going on Dev.

You finish getting all the papers together and neaten them before handing the file back to Devlinson.

“Thanks,” he tells you, running a hand through his curly hair. “Now, today, uh.. Today…”

He flips back and forth through the pages, rubbing his eyes. He squints.

“Today…”

“Let’s have a drink, boss.”

“Eh?”

“I’ve got some good whisky in my car that I was saving for somebody special. But I think you need it more today. Just stay here, I’ll bring it up-”

“Uh, wait. Let me come with. I need to get out of this office, it’s stuffy in here.”

The office is perfectly air-conditioned but you don’t mention it. You hold the door open and walk out behind him, pacing yourself not to overtake him as he hobbles past the cubicles.

“You know I gave up day drinking years ago,” he tells you, pressing the button to summon the elevator.

“It’s never too late to start over.”

“I guess not.”

You end up taking your newly decontaminated van and driving Devlinson off company property before cracking the bottle and pulling out your decanting set. The brown liquor rolls in the glasses as the van continues to drive the both of you on a scenic tour of New Kowloon.

“Now this is how to start the day,” remarks your boss, tilting back 3 fingers of expensive whiskey at once.

“I’m glad you like it.”

It really is good stuff but you make a mental note to pick up some coffee after this… and to try not to get too drunk.

“Is it helping calm your nerves at all?”

“A little. You’re a good kid, Vince…”

[1/2]
>>
>>44195991

[2/2]

He reaches out to grab your shoulder in a friendly way but you wave him off.

“Neither of us is drunk enough for that yet,” you remark, taking a slug of the brown stuff yourself.

“But you know, maybe you could tell me what has you so worried.”

“Ah, well…”

Devlinson swishes his drink in his glass.

“I made some bad choices last week, Dev. I was down in this place I like to go to after work and I saw a fellow I recognized and… we shared some common interests.”

“Common interests? This is’t about to get gay, is it?”

That succeeds in bringing some color back to his face.

“What? No! We just made a bet was all.”

“For how much?”

“10 grand.”

“Holy shit.”

“Yeah. And I lost.”

“Russian bot fighting, Vince. I lost almost everything on Russian bot fighting.”

“I’ve never even heard of that.”

“It’s illegal Vince, they use replication plants to build the bots. Both teams get a little ration of raw material according to their weight-class that they have to design a drone around. Then they fight them.”

“Sounds… interesting.”

You’re lying, of course. That sounds unbelievably nerdy.

“There’s variants, of course. The guy I made the bet with, he was watching the mini-mecha bouts. And you know, that should have been my first clue. That and his suit. But wouldn’t you have bet everything on an American team in the face of a wannabe commie muscleman?”

You tilt back another drink. You should start your day like this more often...

"Well, they just wanted to fight like men, Vinny. It's not their fault the Russians gave theirs a gun."

You almost spit out your drink.

"The American's didn't give theirs a gun?"

"No! They wanted to go mano a mano, that's why their odds were so long!"

"I'm gonna have to make a note in my diary, boss. 'Today I was the smartest guy in the room for the first time in my life-"

"Ah, shaddup."

You seem to have made him grumpy.

"Just a joke."

"From the entire GEC extermination team. They say you've got brass ones."

He looks down into his liquor. Good recovery, Vince...

"I've got a little reserve fund, Vin. Just enough to get clear of Hong Kong and maybe catch a flight somewhere. I'd have nothing and I'd have to start over but... maybe starting from the bottom again is all I deserve."

"What? You worked your ass off for... for GEC, man."

"And what's it got me? A cushy desk job?!"

You put down the empty glass. It clinks against the decanting set.

>temporary trait gained
> Inebriation (1) : +1 to Nerve Pool max, -1 Awareness, further drinking will stack different effects (3 hours)

You look away from the boss and then back.

"Old man, I spend all day in pits for you. If I can't pull you out of a little one like this... I'm not very good at my job, am I?"

He laughs, the first genuine release of tension you've seen from him all morning.

"No, you wouldn't be," he admits, "But we both know better, don't we?"

You smile, semi-sincere.

"Just tell me where you need me to go."

"The place is... underneath the old Opera House. The guy, his name was Sergei Ramnoyovich. He was a moose, Vince. A moose!"

Devlinson expands both his arms to their full wingspan for emphasis, almost slapping you in the face by accident.

"Yeah, he was big. Got it. They open this time of day or?"

"Ah, there's always somebody to take the money. That's a life lesson, m'boy..."

He's settling into the passenger seat and you start to worry he might fall asleep soon.

You crawl backwards over your seat and grab the bag, setting it down next to the booze in the middle of the van.

"Just wait until we stop, okay?"

"Sure... sure."

The old man glances from the bag and then back to you.

"Just wait!"

"Okay, okay."

He begins to fill you in on the details of the day's assignment.

"So... we're headed to Noah's Ark."

"Say again?"

"Noah's Ark, issa Christian theme park that was built way back in 2009 by the billionaire Kwok brothers. It was part of the deal they made for helping with the Tsing Ma Bridge development, yada, yada, yada. The whole turd was abandoned after one of the Kwok's finally dissipated one of the brother's and the other went into hiding. The park was already dying out due to lack of interest and that kind of distraction dried up their flow of funding. Place has been empty since... pre-war times."

"And nobody has touched it since?"

"Couple groups have been looking at it. But the real estate is garbage and it's too expensive for anyone to bother purchasing the land to demolish the thing."

"Well, how big is it?"

"It's full-size, Vince. Crazy bastards built it literally to biblical proportions."

You turn your focus back to the road in an attempt to silence the discussion. Since the van is doing all the driving for you, it isn't very effective. Or dignified.

"A long time ago? How long?"

"Long enough that I don't want to talk about it. It's a stupid story, anyway."

"Maybe you just need to drink more!"

Dev pours out some of the remaining whiskey for you, but you decline.

"You have it. And hand me the file."

"Sure."

You're going to have to clear at least three floors of this place to be sure it's clean, all of them filled with different creationist exhibits. The gate'll be unlocked when you arrive, as the lock was cut by the bridge owner's last night. There are some play and queing areas outside, all covered in tall grass.

An abrupt change in the sound from the tires announces that you've reached Tsing Ma bridge. The sky, which was bright when you started your journey, has grown gloomier as you've progressed.

The Illegal dings twice as it pays the tolls and you discreetly check the status of the tracker you implanted in Mrs. Shan's daughter before embarking on your run earlier today. It looks like she's still at home.

The van parks itself outside the gate. You look down at the bag of cocaine. It's calling to you, but not so strongly that you can't say no...

Uncertain of what you'll find, you decide to bring a mix of firepower and suppressives. You don your body armor and helmet, lowering your thermal goggles to scan the entrance area that lays beyond the parking lot. Lots of little heat blips, some as big as dogs. Those might muta-rats, but anything cold-blooded, no matter how large, would be difficult to pick out at this distance due to thermal noise.

Turning around you spot a very large heat signature indeed as Devlinson tries to fit himself into your hazmat suit.

"Give a man a little privacy, will ya?"

"Sure, sure. Part of me thinks we're gonna need a picture of this though."

A few minutes later he manages to worm his way into the suit and from the back of your van he selects your fire axe, the taser, two frags, your spare gas mask, and he tries to pull out your sniper rifle but you tell him off.

"You're too drunk for that."

"Fine. I'll go with old reliable then" he says, pulling out your wrangling stick.

"You'd be surprised what you can do with one of these..."

"I wouldn't be so sure about that..."

The two of you close up the van and walk down to the gate, which has already been unlocked as promised. Ahead is the overgrown entrance area. Some portions still have walkable paths but it would be faster just to cut past the various barriers and walk through the grassy parts.

You tell Devlinson that you'll be proceeding silently from this point onwards and he nods, wrangling stick in hand. You spend the best part of an hour staking out the spot but no snake. You get excited when you spot something emerge from the water but it reveals itself to just be some variety of over-sized waterbug when it reaches the beach and scuttles off into some nearby reeds.

Thoroughly bored, Devlinson vents his frustrations by tapping on a nearby animal sculpture with the wrangling stick, which angers a needlefly nesting inside. It crawls out and takes flight in the old man's direction but he swats it neatly with the stick.

"Still got it..."

Looking past him, you finally spot the grass rustling as something enters it and moves towards Devlinson at high speed.

Devlinson hears your warning and pivots in the direction of the threat. He crouches down into a ready position and using your thermal goggles, you're able to track a line of heat as it flies beneath the grass cover. When it reache's Devlinson it leaps but he catches it handily with the loop of his wrangling stick and flips it over. This is no mean feat; the creature is at least 2 meters long and looks to be as thick as Dev's arms.

Dev calls you over, clearly pleased with himself but also struggling to keep the creature under control.

"Found your ex, Esperanza!"

Laying on it's back in the grass is the biggest centipede you've ever seen.

Not wanting to expend your limited number of grids, you snatch the handheld taser from Dev's belt and jab the many-legged horror right in its soft underbelly.

This is something of a mistake. The electricity causes the only partially restrained centipede to lash out in pained and frantic spasms.

Devlinson struggles mightily to keep his hold and ultimately he succeeds in keeping it from escaping but only because the struggle causes the body of the centipede to shear off from the point where it is held by the wrangling stick.

>Devlinson expends two STR/STA

The large part of the body goes largely limp but the smaller portion attempts to escape until you capture it under your boot. Even then it attempts to gnaw through the sole, painfully but not severely piercing the underside of your foot before life leaves it entirely.

"Any experience with uh, centipedes?"

"Not of this size!"

Devlinson sounds like he's still exhilarated by all the action.

"How big then?"

"Oh, like a foot-"

You jerk loose the embedded jaws of the colossal centipede from your boot as he talks.

"-but still really vicious. They're predators, you know? The tigers of the insect world, hunting and mauling whatever they can grab, which is everything. They're so quick. Like you would not believe."

"You just had one line, right?"

"Yeah. Did I mention they're usually venomous? And nocturnal?"

"Well, this one wasn't. Unless he just got up for a midnight snack. And I hope to hell they're not venomous..."

"Well, they're usually not venomous to humans. Maybe he came out because he smelled the rats?"

"Maybe. You know anything else about these guys?"

"They like humidity, darkness, and enclosed spaces?"

"Like the inside of the ark?"

"Probably."

Looking around you, there are plenty of places more 'pedes could be hanging out. Dilapidated convenience stands, drained pools full of trash and leaves, trash cans that haven't been picked up in years, and the animal sculptures themselves, which Dev already demonstrated to be hollow.

You move the rat corpses nearer to the ark, hoping to lure out more centipedes. Then you go to inspect the pools.

They're concrete obviously, but their drainage systems have been clogged for decades and thick mats of compressed garbage have settled into them, filling them nearly to the brim. The top layer is soggy and loose but the stuff on the bottom has probably turned into something very much resembling a dirty concrete thanks to pressure and the passage of time.

It stinks to high hell.

You note stuff swimming in the surface puddles and long-legged pseudo-arachnids who step through the scum and muck without paying much heed to you.

You don't notice any movements on the surface of the pool but you see some holes bored in the center of at least two of the ponds which you are tempted to investigate.

Your boss looks back at you; he's been watching the ramp to the ark for more 'pedes.

"Dev, I'm gonna frag the pool! You need to find cover on the other side of the park!"

He nods and retreats to a safe distance, sheltering behind a convenience stand. You put some distance and one of the nicer trashcans between yourself and the pool as well before drawing the pin on the frag grenade.

Now, did the instructions say three seconds or four?

Your baseball experience isn't too helpful for lobbing this grenade but you somehow manage to land the grenade neatly in the center over the small holes. Without warning, the holes then collapse under the weight of the grenade and it tumbles beneath the surface of the pool.

There's a muffled "whoom" and then the contents of the pool seem to bulge out and erupt in a deafening explosion. Pulverized aluminum cans and plastic fills the air with shrapnel and it takes a good minute or two for everything to finally settle down, though your ears are ringing again, irritatingly enough.

Approaching the remains of the pool, you find the cratered smeared with burnt ichor, the few oozing remnants of whatever massive creature lived beneath the pool being a blue/green hue.

Devlinson sprints up beside you.

"It must have filled almost the whole pool."

Despite the ringing in your ears you can still hear something slithering behind you and you whirl around in time to see long pink and brown tendrils moving along the ground in your direction. They’re immensely long, having emerged from the center of another one of the pools. You turn Devlinson around so he can see and then you both bolt in opposite directions. The tentacles pursue but ultimately cannot extend far enough or quickly to grab either of you before you get away. They sweep back and forth, searching within their entire radius. One finds the centipede carcass and wraps itself around it before snapping back into its hole. The rest continue to search until they touch one another, at which point they snap back as well.

“Ever seen something like *that*?”

“Nope.”

You and Dev sprint for the nearest entrance but despite you being the on kitted out in heavy body armor, Devlinson is the one wheezing on arrival.

"Agh, holy hell... hold on a second man..."

He hacks up a loogie of impressive size and lands it in some nearby overgrowth.

"That's better."

He pulls out a pack of cigarettes.

"You want one? It's the second best thing for your comedown."

"No, I'll suffer through."

"Suit yourself."

Devlinson unzips the helm of his hazmat suit to spark up just inside the entrance. The smoke curls up towards the ceiling, seeping into the crevices between planks of rotted wood. You can hear movement up there but without flashlight of your own, you have to wait for Dev to finish his cig so you can start exploring using his helmet light.

It takes about 7 minutes for him to finish and then the two of you are off, exploring the "museum" room by room, starting with Noah recieving the instructions on how to build the ark. Here is a broken but still standing manikin of the bearded man and his many sons, whose faces have all melted or been vandalized. His wife gazes up from the floor, having been tossed across the room at some point.

A detailed infographic explains the dimensions of the ark, how it was 300 cubits long and it's total water displacement. Your head aches and you feel your high slipping away.

Clock cycles, RAM, flash drive integrity, where's the damn wireless?

You give up in disgust.

Moving onward, you enter into a room that is a vast diorama of some ancient patch of land. A miniature of the ark sits half built on the far end of the room, while denizens of nearby cities gather to mock Noah's efforts.

God watches from the corner of the room, his eyes flashing red.

You can see something curled up inside the half-built ark.

What the hell...

You lean in a little closer. That's definitely a little box strapped to the back of the 'pede's head.

"I think this centipede is wearing a wire!"

You pop the taser grid and turn around. Oh no.

"Why would it be wearing a wire, Vince?"

"Uh, it doesn't matter! Just walk towards me, slowly. And don't turn around."

Your boss is virtually invisible against the crawling wave of heat signatures behind him.

"Alright, I'm doing it!"

"Okay, keep walking."

The approaching mass is taking its sweet time. It must not think you can see it, even if it can see you.

Devlinson moves up beside you and you lean in.

"The doorway is directly behind me. Run for the stairs or the nearest exit when I say so."

But when will you say so?

You pull out both specs and unload on the Holy Father, reducing his paternalistic sky god features to rubble in a hail of man-made fire.

Dev sprints forward as fast as he can and you follow after him, running upstairs (there are no other exits). You bust through a pair of still functioning metal doors and stick a piece of nearby rebar through the handles.

Devlinson is again breathing heavily but the tide of 'pedes cannot reach you here.

"Lucky escape, eh?"

You don't answer and instead look around. Red lights blink in the corners of the vast open space you've entered into and you're sure there are other ways onto this floor. You need to escape this place...

"Shine your light around."

Your boss complies and reveals that the second floor of Noah's ark was really a food court. Dusty chairs still sit upside down on brushed steel tables and ancient condiments decay behind the counter of Taco Bell.

You activate Perseus, the camera hacking app on your phone. Despite your earlier fumbling, the program has little issue hacking into the security network, though it does notify you that it had to pass through several layers of security to do so.

As before, you record a loop where you aren't present and set it to run for the discernible future. Whoever is watching will know what's up as soon as one of their own arrives on this floor but they won't be able to locate you using the cams.

>>
>>44205241

You and Dev move deeper into the food court, Dev nervously handling the fire axe and you your pistols.

You're still fiddling with the phone. It's occurred to you that you might be able to access a camera that'll give you a clear picture of your tormentor and so you flip through cam after cam of different bible scenes. You can see the 'pedes are on the move, rushing to the opposite side of the building to try and reach the staircase you assume is there.

Finally you get an image of something else. Darkness, with a single red blinking light in the middle. For a second you think you've stumbled on a camera staring at itself in a dark mirror but then the image pans and you're looking down a long hallway which terminates in a chamber of white-blue light. In the center is a chair, no, a throne, silhouetted against the light.

Then the camera's feed cuts off. Perseus switches automatically to the next cam, which shows the inside of an elevator. An elevator might be your salvation for getting to the ground floor or the roof (or to whomever is orchestrating this)... or it could be a deathtrap.

"What are you contemplating, Esperanza? We're in a dire situation here! We've gotta turtle up!"

Dev is probably right, though you might be better off just running to try and make it to the next floor or the roof.

The first thing you do is run across to the opposite end of the food court and bar the door there. That'll keep the 'pedes out at least a little longer though probably not forever. They're metal doors but they do have little windows of reinforced safety glass that you can already hear the bug slamming themselves against. Nature finds a way, it seems.

You search the old restaurants and find plenty of highly flammable and slippery oil and grease, which you might use as a final line of defense on your way to the exit (however you're planning to exit). You also find a huge reservoir of flaming hot sauce that might still be good, a bunch of breakable glass, and a half a dozen fire-extinguishers. There are also some caustic cleaning chemicals. With that and all the metal furniture around here, you might be able to make something if you work fast.

>Give a basic plan and a roll of 1d100 to see how well you can execute it. Better plan will produce better results.
>>
Rolled 52 (1d100)

Uhoh.

Shards of glass and caustic chemicals would do well in combo with something that showers the swarm with it.

Like with the pressure from a fire extinguisher.

Once they break open safety windows to come in that is a useful choke point to riddle with bulllets.

Metal furniture precariously balanced makes for good trap triggers I guess, bringing the caustic/hot sauce covered glass, in this Home Alone re enactment of Outer Kevin.
>>
Rolled 60 (1d100)

Get the biggest metal container. Light a fire under it.
Pour all your caustic chemicals in the container.
take any intact glass bottles you find and fill them with oil and a rag. Make molotovs. Fire extinguishers that have as much glass shards as you can wrapped around them hidden near the doors.

If you enjoy number-crunching, I suggest continue to hold onto that desire at least until I run Mach Quest sometime down the road. I'm still working on that system and while it's a bit overwhelming for someone weak in math like myself, I'm hoping to achieve a decent simulation of high speed racing.
