The ability to grind has been in games before Awakening. Pretty much all the way back to 4.
As for the art direction? I kind of agree. Sacred Stones had my favorite style, as far as character design and sprites, but nothing can be worse than the Tellius games for me.
Still, Fates has vastly improved over Awakening's designs, imo.

If you abused Colosseum, yeah; I suppose the ability to replay maps is just an acknowledgement of that practice by the devs, but it also removes the meta-game aspects of managing XP and choosing whether to prioritize character growth over effective strategy. One might consider that if the samurai was fending off saviors then his natural reaction would be to take the woman hostage. However he is facing his assailants despite being outnumbered and outgunned. However we must not discard the possibility that both the gunmen and the samurai wishes to do harm to the woman. They may be battling for the right to claim her, and to the victor goes the spoils. Therefore the gunmen could simultaneously be liberating the woman from the samurai and threatening her with their firearms to prevent her escape. It is a complex case, one which I fear has no answer.
