What's the strongest pure melee class in 3.5? (Besides muscle wizards.)
Cleric or Druid
Warblade/some tome of battle class is probably the est you can do if you want no spellcasting.

Well, if you're going pure melee with no weeaboo, you've got a few options:
- Tripper fighter
- Charger fighter (Battle leap and all that)
- Intimidation fighter (Zhentarim - shit against almost everything at high levels but occasionally unbeatable)
But they're all pretty much shit. You'd be better off taking leadership and getting a wizard cohort.

Water Orc leap attacking shocktrooper frenzied barbarian/paladin->fist of raziel, with the orc charging feats.
Seriously, a charger paladin can hit stupid hard.

You're never going to rise higher than Tier 4 in terms of flexibility, but a suitably optimized tripmonkey/ubercharger can be very, VERY good at the one thing they can do.

My bet would probably be on an optimized barbarian with crazy-ass prestige classes. They can even outclass the ToB classes in terms of pure damage output.

No, it generally means someone who purely fights in melee. It makes no statement about the use of magic or not. Both the cleric and the druid make fantastic melee combatants that far outshine any nonmagical class.
If you want to change the criteria to strongest nonmagical classes the barbarian doesn't get anywhere close. For pure damage output some sort of Hulking Hurler is probably going to top the chart but as far as overall strength probably the Warblade.
