How would you go about playing a compelling potions-seller character?

Unfortunately the potions are just too strong for most anyone, so there's no money to be made. Mostly just gloating.

The same way you play any other compelling character. Give them a goal, put an obstacle in the way of that goal. Even if the goal is something as mundane as living a comfortable life (even this can hold alot of appeal for character who have clawed their way out of bad situations like slavery or a past filled with soldier's regrets.)

I still don't understand the humor of this. I want to, then I can enjoy my friends' jokes. But it just doesn't happen.

It's probably just not your thing, then. The humour's not exactly complicated, so it's unlikely you missed something.

Make them incredibly charismatic. Then make it their goal to snake-oil and emotionally pressure everyone to give them their money.
Why would you be a salesman in an adventure game?

Sell the 'potions' that the average person would need.
Sell only the strongest of potions

Like, this will never be funny. No matter how much you try make people think it is.
It's like a pseudo-meme. It neither bad nor good enough to warrant attention, but people post it because they think it might spiral into something, even though it hasn't and it's been years.

>It's like a pseudo-meme
It's literally just a guy making funny faces with a filter on while spouting dialogue

1) go adventuring
2) get loot
3) sell loot
4) use profits to go on bigger adventures
5) get bigger loot
6) repeat

I was just going to suggest him.
A medicine selling, ghost busting, lightsaber wielding super saiyan.
