This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.

Useful links: http://pastebin.com/x6BqaJ7r
This link contains numerous writing guides, general advice, and various quest tools and communities.

https://twitter.com/Eisenstern/lists/quest-runner-directory
This is a directory containing the tweets of most current QM's. While a twitter is by no means mandatory, it is a useful tool for both you and your players. If you are a QM, simply post your Twitter here to have it added to the directory. Spamming your quest twitter with non-quest related tweets may result in its removal from the directory.

IRC Channels:
[The Cabal] #QMC @ Rizon.net (slightly related to quests; enjoys worldbuilding, mechanics and politics)

Alright Weekend Thread, what's your favourite part of your favourite Quest?
>>
>>44162479
Not the flavour i'm going for.

More adventuring for baubles and less fate of the world stuff.

The scene where Brynden have to swallow a tough pill from Jon Arryn in Dorne arc.

Do any QMs run multiple quest threads? How taxing is it to keep up with both of them?
>>
>>44161818
>What is your worldbuilding process?
I get a general idea of what kind of story I want to tell, then figure out the infrastructure needed to support the story. I also dislike railroading players so once the bare bones are in place, I leave enough details vague that players can go where they want to leave the story but have enough meat that any new direction won't be leaving the quest aimless.

>Why do you play your favorite quest?
For fun.
>>
>>44163663
Several.

And what do you mean by taxing? Like, how hard is it to participate in both of them? Not very.
>>
>>44163663
I'm thinking about starting a second quest.
>>
>>44163663
Some run several. Others like me can't even keep a single quest up consistently. You'll probably know best yourself how viable the idea is for you in particular because there's really just too many factors to make a general statement on this.
>>
>>44163727
>Like, how hard is it to participate in both of them?
Exactly. I'd like to run another quest but I'm worried about keeping both of them up to date.
>>
>>44164035
Basically, make a schedule and designate which quest will be run at the times when you can run. People will participate based on the quest more than the QM.
>>
What quest ideas are you currently thinking of running?
>>
>>44163663
So long as you're not running the two threads simultaneously, it's not all that bad.

I don't know if it's bad form to make an announcement in the /wqdt/ about something that doesn't run on the weekend but after an unintentional hiatus, Exterminator Quest should be back in its old Tuesday 5pm EST timeslot.

On the agenda: Exploring weird and real parts of Hong Kong as part of one last job for Scrooge, driving real fast, finding out who's watching us, and possibly acquiring evidence to take down a serial killer and exonerate a fetishist. Hell, maybe we'll even make it to the weekend so you can go to Scythian Court.
>>
>>44163767

Don't, it ends in heartache and will eventually slay one of the two quests.

End or wrap up your currrent one, then launch the new quest.

So I have to ask, since I've never really done quests before, and I'm still digging through the useful links, how would one get started? and better yet, where would be a good place to start?

I had some ideas for some starship trooper inspired thing, and figured doing some stuff in bootcamp, might be a nice way to build up some skills, do some world building, and socializing before they run off to the adventure proper.

I was also considering doing it as a semi-drawn quest. Especially since being a drawfag is my favorite part of playing my favorite quests.
>>
How do you justify the "bunch of kids in a magical university" setting?

Would:
> monsters and shit appear every few years or so
> magic is the only thing that touches it
> only the noble bloodlines can produce a magic user
>>
>>44166850
If you're going to attempt to keep your drawing to the same quality as what you posted, you're probably going to want to run on tgchan instead. /tg/ runs way too fast for that level of drawfagging in a quest, no to mention that most /tg/ drawfag quests aren't that big anymore.
>>
>>44166873
All of these sound good, but put in some class conflict of the occasional peasant being discovered as magical enough for enrollment.

>>44166930
I've seen a couple of quests on /tg/chan, and while the speed is the big difference what are in terms of user base. Like how much crossover is there between there and here? Assuming there's any.

Yeah no that level of art isn't what i'm gonna go for. Something more like pic related is what I can do in a good 15 minutes. But I haven't had to try and mix it with writing as well.
>>
>>44167028
I don't really have any basis for it, but i'd assume by sheer numbers not very many fa/tg/uys frequent tgchan, but conversely a significant chunk of the people on /tg/chan are also fa/tg/uys.
>>
>>44167028
>But I haven't had to try and mix it with writing as well.
honestly I'd recommend doing a oneshot first instead of jumping into what you actually want to run, because if you're not up to it yet you might poison the well on your "proper" quest
>>
>>44167075
I might try that. So if thats the case should i do something like a mini version of what i'm planning? or something new?
>>
>>44167098
Well, personally I'd do something new, because I'd worry people might get irritated i was "rebooting" instead of continuing the first quest, but i might be being overly cautious to be perfectly frank.
>>
I'm revisiting an old quest idea I had a long time ago.

It's full-on cringe.

Anyone have any ideas like that where you go back to it and realize that you are probably glad you never ran with it?
>>
>>44167157
Tell us more.
>>
>>44167157
My first quest idea was pretty cringey, at least in the way I put it down on paper. Generally I'm less worried about cringe than I am about whether people would even read that far or finding time to run in the first place.
>>
>>44167161
I'll copy+paste the pitch from a year ago.

>You're a butler in an academy for young adults to become prim and proper ladies and gentlemen. Surrounding the academy is a city embroiled in political turmoil that is only beginning to affect the daily lives of the students.
>You start as a lowly, improper street thug that slowly rises throughout the quest to be the best damn butler ever. The setting's tone is Anime as hell.
>Tech level
>Pseudo-modern/Around the late 1800's level of tech. I'm working with the assumption that some things from real-life are simply not compatible with the type of society that they find themselves in. Trains are used for outer-city transportation, trolleys for inter-city. Guns exist, but people being bulletproof is a thing that can happen due to physical training alone.

>Type of society?
>The type of society is a full-on republic. I'm basing it loosely off the Roman Republic. It's ruled by a Senate with some interesting characters as the Senators.

>How do we end up there?
>In the setting or the academy?

>either ways, you start as a common delinquent with little past and not much of a bright future. Roaming the streets and taking jobs from people to keep your stomach full. >You're recruited initially because you're identified as the makings of a great gentleman, but your demeanor and attitude leave much to be desired. Much of which has to be honed through the powerful art of Butlery.

From the notes I have saved, Hexer said it was okay. But then again Hexer runs a quest almost identical to that.

I'm glad I never ran it, because past this I'm not entirely sure where I would have gone with it. It feels cringey just looking back.
>>
>>44167185
Want to elaborate?
>>
>>44167191
>You're a butler in an academy for young adults to become prim and proper ladies and gentlemen.
>a butler
Oh Lord.
>>
>>44167224
Get any flashbacks? I did.
>>
>>44167191
There are only 2 things here that set off alarms for me.

>The setting's tone is Anime as hell.
>common delinquent+makings of a great gentleman

The rest is passable. It's not like we need true to life politics. Butlering sounds a little damn familiar to some WN, but that's not a sin as such.
>>
>>44167224
Please don't make it the return of that one goddamn quest.

I just found even more of that conversation.

>That's different... so I suppose there being an academy that actively looks for people means it's a much, much bigger field than it would normally be given the tech level?
>That's something I hadn't put a lot of thought into. That's more of something that happens because of a very specific circumstance that happened at the academy and not because they were expected to hire you in the first place.

> Or, in other words, which kinds of people employ the graduates of the academy? The well-off, or just the REALLY rich?

>Everyone, they're extremely potent political tools. Mostly because the surrounding cities/nations are floundering where it comes to political sciences.
They're hired for all matters relating to the professional lives of the well-off class. Which is why many of the well-off decide to send their children there in the first place.

>As for size, it's not a very big academy, it doubles as political asylum as well as a way for the wealthy to turn their children into politicians.

> ...you weren't kidding when you said it'd be anime as all hell.
>I like it that way, I didn't even talk about the most anime as hell part of it all.

> inb4 famous butler/maid clans with special bloodline powers.
>I hadn't considered it before but now I have

> I hadn't considered it before but now I have
It could be pretty interesting, and it could help justify some of the sillier things you might want to include.

It feels good to look back and laugh at some of it.
>>
>>44167157
I had an idea while high about running a game about being trapped in the Snake Casino, this weird huge interdimensional complex devoted to gambling away your fates and the fates of others. Tarot mechanics and everything.
The idea was that the MC was trapped by a debt he owed to dream-eating snakes that ran the place and would have to gamble just to stay afloat while surviving in the slumtown that had sprung up within the Casino itself filled with people who either couldn't leave or didn't want to.

It was too high-concept and probably unworkable.
>>
>>44164289
Will never happen but I'm toying with a lot of options:

Evil Genius quest based on the video game, as corny as possible with evil lair, doomsday weapon, shrinking the Eiffel tower, special agents, and dealing with the minions forming a union due to one too many public executions.

Capeshit as an evolving symbiote against sandbox opponents not unlike City of Heroes, with villains/heroes graded as Street level, national, international, galactic, and genetic, technological, magical, etc.

Necromancer quest for domination

Guilds quest with a clean slate character: Warriors' guild, mages' guild, thieves' guild, assassin's guild, the church/inquisition, merchants' guild, the great political houses. Would include guild management and guildhall/member upgrades once you're in a proper rank and income/spending concerns.

Bleach Hollow quest. Eating souls, confronting shinigami, evolving, reaching espada, dealing with Aizen's bullshit.

>>44167349
>>44167323

>Go on.
>When I said the Senators were interesting characters, I was underselling it. Senators in this setting become senators to lead provinces, but adventurers are the ones who end up becoming senators the most because they're the strongest and therefore the most looked-up to. Remember, this is a setting where you can physically train yourself to deflect bullets and perform other acts of superhuman strength. So the person who can lift a train with his bare hands is more likely to become a political juggernaut than the person who is a skilled orator.

>Which is where the political turmoil comes from, none of the senators are politicians at all. Most of them are soldiers, and not particularly clever ones at that. The academy is meant for training people to assist and run the senate's political duties because the actual senators themselves, the ones who are elected, are far from capable of being able to do it.
>As an example of their crudeness, most senators, when asked how to get ash stains out of silk table cloths, would suggest burning the cloth and buying another.
>>
>>44167392

>>
>>44167408

but yeah, no way this is serious.
>>
>>44167437
>>44167461

I cannot tell you what my mental state was at the time. It was so long ago.
I had zero idea if it was meant to be serious or a backdrop for dumb harem antics.

I think what happened is that this was just coming off the PGQ craze and I was thinking "I want to make a silly waifu quest, too."

This idea also came after reading JoJo part 2, so I think that was the tone I may have been striving for.

It's just a haze, now.
>>
>>44167473
then it's fine, no shame there.

I mean, aside from admitting "I want to make a silly waifu quest, too."
>>

>>
>>44167486
A part of me still does, but it's died down by now.
I used to have fun with silly waifu quests. The worst part about them is when they had to end and a choice had to be made.
>>
That reminds me, what differentiates a 'waifu quest' from a quest that just happens to have a waifu in it?
>>
>>44167509
Waifu quests are primarily about pursuing a/multiple waifu/s.
>>
>>44167509
A waifu quest is one that is chocked full of pretty girls about the MC's age who would never, ever be found in the posts they are found in. But are there because it makes lots of love interests for the MC to fawn over.

It also has the trait of all of them inexplicably wanting the MC and only the MC. With all other competition seemingly an asshole or seemingly absent.
>>
>>44167509
The definition that most people accept is what you'd expect it to be: a quest that is mostly focused around the waifus.

The definition people here use varies between "whatever quests I personally don't like" and "literally every quest with a female side character".
>>
I'm not sure

I actually liked Waifu Quest, too bad it's discontinued long ago
>>
>>44167570
I like any quest that's not serious and makes lots of characters for the MC to interact with.

that's not unnatural. It's a niche that used to be HUGE on /tg/ that is now mostly unfilled.
>>
>>44167570
I'll let you in on a little secret.

Waifu Quest wasn't a waifu quest.
>>
>>44167509

The level of pandering. For instance, PGQ is a waifu quest. It's a VN where the main objective is hooking up with one of the girls. Keep in mind I'm not saying this is a bad thing, it's just the mood of the game. Same for that quest that came from /a/, whose name I can't remember right now. Anima Quest? Gear Quest? Something anime-ish.

Joker Quest has waifus, but isn't a waifu quest, mostly because it's too mean-spirited to be one. Shadow Quest had a waifu, but wasn't a waifu quest either.

Basically, compare a VN like Kara no Shoujo, Fate's UBW route, or something more adventure-ish to games which are predominantly about fucking girls.
>>
>>44168234
I would say JQ is a waifu quest. It's certainly dark and grim, but it's still all about the waifus. It's not like those two things are exclusive.
>>
>>44168346
>but it's still all about the waifus
It can't be about the waifus since there are no waifus left.
>>
Speaking of drawquest, whatever happen to QuestQuest?
>>

>>44166985
Magic is purely hereditary and only nobles have it, since they interbred with Demons/Angels in the time before time.

Sometimes a peasant has it, which means they're the bastard child of a noble who wishes to remain anonymous, or they're from a branch of nobility that was thought to have been destroyed or exiled from the land completely. Either way they're bad news.

>>44167307

Yeah, the main love interest is in a coma and the secondary one now hates Joker forever. The third one is now damned for all eternity, and the last one died of a broken heart. The class rep girl who gets a non-canon love scene died a pretty awful death, too.

Actually, I don't think anyone's had a happy ending so far. The happiest guy is probably Calcite Arrow, who thought he'd killed Joker just before Joker killed him.

Some players asked for it after we dodged a bullet during a really sexually charged scene and the QM was willing to kill some time writing it.

Shadow Quest did this better than you could hope to. Sorry bud.
>>
>>44174627
But it didn't do any of that
>>
>>44174638

That's kind of my point though. SQ worked because it inverted a lot of standard fantasy tropes you are apparently attempting to invoke unironically.

But what do I know? Run it anyways, maybe you'll get /tg/ famous.
>>
>>44174931
>SQ worked because it inverted a lot of standard fantasy tropes you are apparently attempting to invoke unironically.
It really didn't. It was basically just a more fluffed out standard JRPG story.
>>
>>44174476
Mandalorian Quest.

Start out as a young Mandalorian who's just received their first set of armor. Galactic exploration, war mongering, getting dem creds and generally fucking shit up. I still haven't figured out a good overarching plot point yet. It's the only reason I haven't run it yet.

>>44174207
They should always be allowed. 80% of QMs aren't nearly as good as they think they are.
>>
>>44174931
>it inverted a lot of standard fantasy tropes
Not really. "Fantasy setting as a computer simulation" is fairly common, as is aging up the loli in an effort to normalfy the developing romance, humans being already dead, and order/angels being evil
>you
Wasn't me, senpai. I don't even much care for the pitch, I just think you're taking out your ass
>>
>>44174931
Inverting tropes is not the same as using them. It is in fact, the opposite of that, by design.
>>
>>44175109

Can't speak to that since I almost never play JRPGs anyways.

>>44175146

This is a pretty common critique of SQ from people who never actually read the quest while it was running. The Sci-fi elements were brought in the last two or three threads out of 220. Humans weren't just dead - they had been reborn in a different form. All the humans in SQ really were sapient humans, even though the human race had died off millions of years ago. The angels weren't bad guys, with one notable exception. They were just religious zealots who honestly believed in what they were doing and sometimes did the right thing too.

I've noticed that the people who hate SQ most are usually the ones who know the least about it.

Weaboo-ish cape Quest vaguely inspired by Double Cross. The QMC would be a robot that was originally intended as a new body for a mad scientist, but ran away after the scientist's rival implanted an AI in him.

Now the QMC is on the run, steadily achieving new levels of self-awareness and trying to escape his crazy creator, who keeps sending more and more absurd opponents to catch his masterpiece. Along the way, the robot obviously meets other colourful characters (psychics, mutants, cyborgs, aliens, wuxia-style martial artists, etc) and discovers the meaning of friendship and yada yada yada. You know the drill.

QM Question
Do you have a specific type of music or playlist to go with your quest?

Player Question
Do you enjoy when a QM posts music to help set a scene?
>>
>>44180526
Most of the more important characters of my quest have a specific song that I associate with them, and listen to when writing scenes centric to them, to try and better sympathize with their mindset while I'm writing.

It'd be kind of silly to post all of them, but the main character uses:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usXhiWE2Uc0

I don't post these in the quest, or even really mention them, though. The inspiration the QM draws from material typically isn't of any interest or meaning to the consumers of the end result. I don't feel that posting the music at any time would actually add anything of worth to the experience.
>>
>>44180526
>QM Question
I have playlists for different kinds of moods.
>>
>>44180896
Yeah I've only ever posted music during intense moments in the quest or very heavy plot time

When it comes to 40k quests, what (if any) things are they missing? Or, rather, what don't they usually do well?
>>
>>44181831
Nothing, it's just that most of the 40k community has Quest in their filters, so they never see 40k quests.
>>
>>44181831
Nothing in general, but there tends to be a slight disconnect between what some people want from something 40k and what they want from a quest.
>>
>>44181978
Yeah if you even mention Quests in a 40k thread they have a full blown meltdown
>>
>>44181831
They're missing a player base.
Or a player base that isn't somehow worse than even the shittiest quest's player base.

While there is nothing to explicitly say they are two separate things, the 40kids will be quick to bitch and moan in most cases, so you may as well just assume they are mutually exclusive existences and you're trying to have fun the wrong way by mixing them.

Jesus christ, guys. Visiting an arcade does not mean that a girl is a whore. I'm honestly surprised that Yui has a mini-arc about her crush on Joker, because there's really nothing supernatural about her. Volt Regios is arguably more attractive, too.

Oh for Christ's sake, shut up already. You bring her up every single fucking time there's a discussion about girls in JQ and always say the same exact thing. It's getting obnoxious.

My last quest ran for about six threads until my life exploded. It left me with no time to run it or even internet access.

That was about a two years ago. My life has since stabilized, but I don't know if I should even try to continue it or restart it.

>QM topic
Still working on that, I'd like to start mine in the near future.

>player topic
Two primary reasons:
- the lulz
- the references to things I'm a fan of. Including but not limited to; characters from the setting's original work, descriptions of locations from the original setting that are revisited in the quest thread.
>>
So, considering I have little exposure to quest threads but plenty of tabletop gaming and gming experience and currently I'm dallying with the idea of making a quest thread... What do you recommend I do? Read up on old quest threads to get more on how it's run? Read up on the advice links and etc? Or hash out ideas and brainstorm at random in here?
>>
>>44185531
Do the first two, then the third.
>>
>>44185531
Read the advice links. They contain good information, but they're more like guidelines than hard rules. Use them as an idea for what you're getting into, rather than a hard instruction manual.

Don't rely too much on these threads. Your ideas either won't be discussed, or will have passing interest. Develop it yourself until you're happy with the general setting and some rough plot ideas (or however detailed you think you want to be), and then pitch the idea you want to run here to get up some initial players - Remember, that YOU enjoy running it will be more important in the longrun than that a bunch of random anons said they might be interested.

And yes, read a few quests. Some are better than others, a lot of it is personal opinion. There are a bunch of old-timey classic quests (Ruby) people will bring up, but those are usually drawquests. Other things you can check out are more recent popular ones like RE:Spider, MGNQ, Banished, Joker, Ryukuza, etc.

Reading quests isn't actually required, but it's neat seeing how other people do things, if you're interested in that sort of thing. As always, read what you enjoy, not what you think you have to.
>>
Plot with smut goes on Akun, yes?
>>
>>44187125
Yep. At least I wouldn't risk running anything like that on /tg/.
>>
>>44187125
Anything goes on Akun.

Plot with Smut is allowed here, judging from Warlord and Crusty's stuff.
>>
>>44187125
Go tell Orc Warlord Quest that.
Or Crusader Quest.
There's probably a few more I'm forgetting.
>>
>>44187125
Considering the current state of smut on /tg/, it's probably better that way.
It's not like you can't run anything smutty here as pastebins seem to be allowed (for now), but people have gotten the banhammer for it. Not sure if a quest would even stay on the board for long enough for a janitor or mod to notice it though.
>>
>>44187225
Nah, we've had smut stick around for quite a while now. See anything by Warlord and Homeless Mutant Quest.
>>
>>44187249
I do know it exists, but the mods have started to get a bit tighter with that kind of content in general. I've yet to see it happen in a quest, but random smut on other threads has been removed and some people who used to do that a lot have gotten bans for it lately.
