You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Currently, you had penetrated deep into the main laboratory complex of Reikland's Der Riese facility, where they manufactured all of their undead soldiers and other affiliated abominations of nature. However, the mastermind of these horrors, Willhelm Strasse, was busy making his escape on an armored train.

However, stopping him wasn't such a simple affair. After all, he had just released two previously unseen creations, the Panzerhunds, leaving just you to hold them off while Rock and Alex to figure out how to stop the train.

First things first, though, were to the two giant, mechanical dog things charging right at you, bounding at you with a speed and grace as if they were actual flesh and blood dogs.

"What do we do?" Tarin asks.

"Brace Clementine, Tarin!" You bark as you undo your weapon safeties. "We're going to unload everything we have into these bastards!"

"Roger." Tarin nods and immediately pulls sever levers. You can feel Clementine shift and shudder as she spreads her legs farther apart to widen her stance, and bends her knees down in order to lower her center of gravity.

Meanwhile, you take aim through your sight at the nearest of the giant metal hounds as they bear down on you...

You first ripple fire your Dragonsbreath, sending six incendiary rockets shrieking at the Panzerhunds. The first three slam right into the leading Panzerhund's face, slagging its armored skull and setting it on fire. The Panzerhund roars in pain and surprise, but continues to charge forward. The second set spreads out a bit as they have to travel farther, and two impact the second Panzerhund's face while the third blasts one of its front legs, setting it on fire as well, but not stopping it.

Thankfully, you had one more weapon left, and you aim your 76mm cannon right at the closest Panzerhund and fire, your HVAP round coring a hole clean into its melting face. The Panzerhund gives a last gasp before crashing to the ground, its armor screeching against the concrete floor. Unfortunately, the second Panzerhund, possibly in revenge for its fallen comrade, has a sudden burst of speed and lunges. Clementine shakes and rumbles as steel clashes against steel, throwing you and Tarin around the crew compartment. However, instead of pulling away, the Panzerhund stands on its hind legs, using its two front legs to keep itself grappled to Clementine. You see it open its mount to reveal rows upon rows of chittering sawteeth. You're not sure if they can cut through Clementine's armor, but you weren't about to find out.

"We need to do something or we're going to tip over!" Tarin grunts as she tries to keep Clementine stable.

Meanwhile, you catch a glimpse of Lagoon trying to disable the train engine, but its 75mm shells just dent the heavily armored vehicle as it slowly warms up.

"Do it, Tarin!" You yell.

"Get ready!" Tarin warns as she hits a lever. Deep inside Clementine's slender legs, the hydraulics hidden within suddenly release their stored energy in one explosive motion. Her legs straighten up, sending Clementine's hull shooting upwards and slamming into the Panzerhund's lower jaw, forcing it shut.

Now off balance, the Panzerhund stumbles backwards before falling back onto all fours. You swear it snarls at you as it bounds back to take cover around a row of cargo containers, no doubt to wait for another chance to strike.

However, at the same time, the train begins to grind forward, picking up speed as it goes.

"Rock! What's going on!?" You yell.

"This damn train's too well armored!" Rock complains. "I don't even know if your cannon can punch it!"

"What about the wheels?" Tarin observes. You take a look yourself, and while the wheels do have protective armoring over them, you don't think it's as thick as the main hull.

"You might derail the whole train if you do that." Alex warns. "And we have no idea what that train is carrying."

"Aim for the wheels!" You order. "Let's take out this whole damn train!"

"All right, firing!" Alex announces.

You yourself aim for the wheels of the front engine and fire simultaneously with Alex, blasting part the wheels. As you kind of hope, the front engine jumps the track as the wheels break loose.

Funnily enough, that's when all hell breaks loose as well.

You watch as the engine jumps the track, and begins rolling like a baking pin, causing a chain reaction on the cars all the way down the length of the train. The others cars slam into each other and jump off the tracks as well, falling over sideways and rolling as well, Some explode while others merely break open like pinatas, spilling their contents all over the platform.

But it was mostly explosions. Lots of explosions.

"We gotta get out of here!" Rock yelps as Lagoon rolls past. "We're going to get caught in the flames!"

"He's right." Tarin adds.

"Let's go, then, Tarin!" You yelp.

Clementine lurches as Tarin does a complete 180 degree turn and goes off at full speed, Clementine striding along as fast as she possibly could. Even through Clementine's thick armor, you could feel the heat from the fires behind.

"JESUS WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT TRAIN CARRYING?!" You yell.

"It was certainly ready for a party!" Rock laughs.

"Laugh when we're not going to die!" Alex snaps.

"Hey, what the hell is going o- HOLY SHIT!" Bannon screams as he sees the wall of hellfire chasing after you as Clementine and Lagoon sprint down the tunnel as fast as they could manage. His VT along with Brick quickly step out of the way as Clementine and Lagoon clear the tunnel, narrowly missing the column of flame that shoots out.

"WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO!?" Bannon screams hysterically.

"Our job, of course." Rock replies coolly.

"He DOES have a point." Parker notes.

"Well whatever." Bannon sputters. "And what about Strasse? Did you confirm his death?"

"I suppose we should go back and check." You sigh. "No sense leaving a job half done."

However, the tunnel was now too dangerous to use, what with all the fire and the possibility that it could have collapsed midway. Instead, your platoon opts to travel on the surface to the rail platform. After all, by this point, the main Tilean forces appear to have finally fought their way through the main perimeter defenses and entered the inner section of the facility. You could see Tilean VTs and infantry ruthlessly hopping from building to building to clear them out. All over, you could see both the black uniformed soldiers and the white coated scientists attempting to escape. Some groups are rounded up captured, while others are just shot in the back. However, you didn't have time to worry about that stuff. You continue on to the rail platform, which was still in flames. What used to be aa large rail platform was nothing but melted steel and ash. You also get the distinct feeling you're smelling burnt flesh again as well, but you try not to think about it.

"Oh dear, Egan is NOT going to be happy when she sees this." Parker sighs. "Doesn't look there's much left."

"Ah, she'll have plenty to pore over." Rock laughs.

"Something tells me that it's better off that all this stuff got burned." Axel grumbles.

"Y-yeah. S-some things should never be done!" Alfie agrees.

"Do you feel the ground rumbling?" Tarin asks as she turns to you.

You don't have time to answer when Clementine shakes and rumbles. At first, you're afraid that there's some kind of mechanical issue, until you realize that it's not Clementine shaking, but the ground beneath her feet.

Suddenly, a giant steel hand rises from the flames, clenching into a defiant fist.

"I did not think that I vould have to use this so soon." You here Strasse's voice growl through unseen loudspeakers. "But I apparently have no choice."

With that, a massive humanoid form rises from the flames, its head featureless save for a thin, visor-like optic shines brightly as it activates. It stands upright, easily dwarfing your VTs. You watch warily as its head looks down at the four of you.

"It appears you must be taught a lesson!"

Your first instinct is to fire, your cannon roaring as the HVAP shell flies out and punches into the torso of the massive machine with little effect, like a flea bite. The rest of the platoon fires, but their weaker 75mm cannons don't even seem to scratch it.

The massive machine then raises it's massive foot, large enough to crush a VT under it...

"Tarin, move, MOVE! We gotta lead this thing away from the main force!" You yell.

"Moving!" Tarin yells back as she jerks the control stick, pivoting Clementine around to move away from the main attack force at full gallop. The rest of the platoon, in the absence of any kind of orders, instinctively follows your lead, running as fast as possible while ineffectually firing their cannons at the massive armored beast. Only your shells seem to be punching through the armor if aimed right, but without any idea of where the damn thing's weak points were, all you were doing was pricking it with a pin.

At least the good thing about it being so damn large was that it was pretty damn slow. Even Brick was able to outpace it, though only just barely.

"Our guns aren't scratching it!" Axel curses. "What do we do?!"

"Well, it's shaped like a human, so we take it down like a human!" Rock observes. "Like my old hand to hand combat instructor said, sweep the leg!"

"Hm, if we pour enough high explosive into one of the knees, we might be able to damage enough to cause it to stop or fall." Parker muses. "We just need somebody to draw it's attention, though. We can't aim effectively if we're forced to keep moving all the time."

"Wonderful." Bannon groans.

"Rock, Alex, you think you two are up to being the bait?" You ask.

"Sure thing." Alex says solemnly, probably knowing they were the best suited for the task.

"I suppose that's the tradeoff to being the fastest." Rock sighs. "Sure thing, kid."

"All right, the rest of you, pick a firing position and get to it! Rock, we'll be waiting on you!" Bannon barks.

"Roger that." Rock sighs as Lagoon sprints across the Uberpanzer's path, firing its cannon wildly as it goes. It takes the bait, and starts turning its head to track the fleeing VT, and be extension, the rest of its massive body begins to pivot. As Lagoon is literally right under the machine, the Uberpanzer lifts its gigantic foot and slams down.

"Left. LEFT!" You hear Alex command.

Lagoon sidesteps to the left, deftly avoiding the foot, but the shockwave it causes from the impact alone propels Lagoon several feet into the air before it comes crashing back down, its knees bending to absorbing the sudden fall.

"Shit, that steps HARD." Rock curses. "If you guys are gonna do something, do it now!"

By this point, you and the rest of the platoon have taken position behind a small ridge, and you all aim up at the back of the giant's knee.

All three of you fire, pumping shots of fire and steel into the back of the giant. But the target is tiny, moving, and far away. Yours and Bannon's shots miss wide, but Axel scores a direct hit, engulfing the knee joint in fire and shrapnel. You watch as the giant stumbles, its footing suddenly uncertain.

Suddenly, you see panels in the giant's back open, revealing batteries of cannons, no doubt to give it some ranged firepower. And they were all now aiming at your little group...

Both sides fire at the same time.

The giant's cannons fire , but they're rapidly aimed and not very accurate. By contrast, you and your platoon score numerous hits, you shells going right into the new openings and demolishing a few of the cannons. Unfortunately, there were no secondary explosions, meaning any damage you caused was ultimately limited.

Meanwhile, the giant's return fire does score a couple of hits. One glances off of Brick, while scores a solid hit on Bannon's VT, scoring a deep gouge in the frontal armor.

"Shit! Falling back!" Bannon coughs, apparently from smoke as Parker puts their VT in reverse, leaving just you, Brick and Lagoon to fight for now.

What's more, the Uberpanzer's cannon panels close up, probably just now realizing they were a new weakness. It then starts turning around, its arms ready to strike. Its movement is slowed as its damaged left knee sparks and smokes, but its actions are clear and inevitable.

All three of your VTs fire. You see one shell glance off of the knee joint, but two more, yours and Axel's, score direct hits. This time, the knee joint buckles and smokes, sending the giant crashing down onto its damaged knee. The rest of its body would have fallen to if it didn't manage to prop itself up with its two massive arms, the dual impact causing another miniature earthquake.

And this brings its head conveniently right into firing range of your cannon.

There's no words or niceties or customary farewells. You aim Clementine's cannon right at the big, glowing target that is the giant's visor and hit the trigger. Almost instantaneously, see a hole materialize right in the middle of the visor. It goes dark.

Tarin, either from luck, intuition, or just some sort of sixth sense, is the first to grasp the meaning of those words. Without any input from you, she immediately grabs the controls and spins Clementine around.

"CLEAR THE AREA!" You hear Tarin yell for the first time in a very long time. She was always the kind of person who when she raised her voice, it was for a very, VERY good reason.

Alfie and Alex instinctively react to Tarin's warning and immediately turn and start trying to gain as much distance from the fallen hulk.

Just mere seconds later, the Uberpanzer explodes in a violent cloud of fire, briefly becoming an artificial sun. For the second time in the night, your platoon runs for their lives as they're chased by a massive explosion. However, this one was a bit more powerful than the train, and the shockwave hits the back of Clementine and actually knocks her forward, putting her so off balance that not even Tarin can keep it under control and Clementine topples.

"Hold on-" Is all you manage to utter when Clementine nosedives into the dirt, sending you flying forward from your seat and into the control panel in front of you, and all you see is stars.

--

"Hey."

You groan as your eyes slowly force themselves open. You can hear a dull thumping against Clementine's hull.

"HEY! Can you hear me in there?" You hear a muffled voice from outside. "Anyone alive?"

"Yeah, we're alive." You croak, your throat suddenly feeling clogged and dry. You look over to the driver's station, where you see Tarin slowly being roused from the noise as well.

The hatch is suddenly wrenched open, filling the interior of your VT with blinding white sunlight. Either that supernatural gloom finally lifted or you were out for a VERY long time. A Tilean medic pokes her head in.

"You two okay?" She inquires, her eyes already scanning both you and Tarin for any obvious injuries.

"I'm fine." You groan as you start to crawl your way to Tarin and help pull her up to the hatch. The medic dutifully takes Tarin and hauls her out while a second medic pulls you out. You wince at the sunlight outside, and wait for your eyes to adjust.

When they do, they show just how narrowly you avoided disaster. Where the fallen Uberpanzer used to be was a massive black crater, the charred dirt still smoking. Of the giant war machine, there was no sign, no doubt vaporized by the blast. Had you been standing still, you probably would've been vaporized with it.

"Lucky bastards." The medic remarks. "We though you guys were toast after seeing that blast."

"Lucky us, huh?" You chuckle.

You and Tarin are escorted to an impromptu aid station, where Axel, Alfie, Rock, and Alex were already gathered, all in various states. Rock was sitting on a cot, smoking with one arm while the other was in a sling. Alex seemed to be taking a nap, while Axel had a thick bandage around his head with a anxious but otherwise healthy Alfie fretting over his condition.

"Yo, so you're still alive, kid." Rock exhales a small cloud of smoke. "Good to see. Tarin really saved our asses there."

"Oh, I'm so glad to see you two are saaaaafe!" Alfie wails as she hugs both you and Tarin.

"Same." Tarin says simply.

"Good to see you're okay to." You grin. "Where's Bannon and Parker?"

"Currently getting the hell chewed out of them by Sawyer." Rock sighs.

"What? But we won, didn't we?" You blink.

"Yeah, we won, but not quite in the way the higher ups desired." Rock shrugs. "I think it's best we lowly tankers stay out of it.

"Fuck that, Bannon and Parker have looked out for us, the very least we can do is return the favor." You scowl.

"Well, good luck with that." Rock takes another pull from his cigarette. "As you can see, the rest of us are out of commission for the time being."

"Don't worry, we'll manage." Tarin remarks as she puts an ice pack against her head. "Just make sure they take care of the VTs."

"W-we will!" Alfie says.

After a quick bandage job to cover up some cuts on your head, you and Tarin head over to the main facility, which has now been converted into a makeshift HQ. You could see soldiers running to and fro, tagging and bagging pretty much anything they could find and burning the rest. Meanwhile, more soldiers were busy packing up gear and recovering vehicles, taking ones that could be salvaged while leaving behind ones that were beyond repair. Even though Tilea had seized the facility, there was no reason to actually hold it. The army would be moving on to link back up with the Bretons for one final push to the capital.

The guards let you into the HQ after a quick check of your credentials, where you see a very frustrated looking Sawyer glaring at your commanding officers.

"Not only did you essentially destroy the entire main laboratory complex, destroying a treasure trove of possible intelligence we could have gained on Reikland's experimental weapons programs, but you go and kill the only man who knew about all of them!" Sawyer shakes his head. "Now, I would've expected this sort of carelessness from Bannon, but not your, Parker."

"The situation on the ground wasn't that simple." Parker says, trying to stay as straight and composed as possible. "There were multiple unexpected factors at play."

"Sir." You say flatly as you step into the room. "If you're going to blame anybody for all the destruction, it's me. I was the one who derailed the train and I was the one that put the finishing blow to Strasse. Bannon and Parker had nothing to do with it."

"Is that so?" Sawyer's attention switches over to you. He then looks to Tarin. "Were you in on it, too?"

"Yes sir. We're a crew, after all." Tarin says simply.

Sawyer just looks at you, and then back to Bannon and Parker before finally shaking his head and letting his shoulders droop.

"Off the record, you people did a damn fine job. We all saw you take down that superweapon of his, and whatever was in that lab is better off not coming out." He grumbles. "But we took some pretty heavy casualties in this battle and the brass are unhappy we don't have much to show for it. Somebody's going to have to answer for that. You sure you want to put yourself in the crosshairs?"

You give on glance over to Tarin, who nods silently in agreement. She's stuck with you so far, so why was she going to change her mind now?

"I'm ready for anything sir." You say with confidence. "What's going to happen?"

"Fortunately for you, since we're at war, we can't afford to lose skilled soldiers to such petty things like court martials or corporal punishment." Sawyer grumbles. "Unfortunately, the brass have more 'creative' methods of punishment. Namely, extremely dangerous missions."

"So we're being sent on a suicide mission, sir?" Tarin raises an eyebrow.

"Let's not call it that. A lot of bad luck to call them that." Sawyer gives a sad grin. "But yes, that's the general idea."

"Well, how suicidal is it going to be?" You ask.

"How do I put this." Sawyer frowns. "We just got word from the Bretons. They managed to seize the Iron Foundry, but suffered a few setbacks. The Reiklanders were able to evacuate lot of equipment and vehicles tanks to the actions of one particular person, and due to certain conduct that person has committed, the Bretons are howling for blood."

Sawyer then tosses a picture on the table. On, you could see a very familiar one-eyed girl, sitting casually in a large wooden chair with what had to be a dozen captured Breton battle standards. On the corner, you could see elegant handwriting reading "Thanks for the new wall decorations! I'll be sure to take good care of them!"

"The brass not only sees this as a way to get back into the Bretons' good graces, but they consider her a strategic threat to the war effort." Sawyer gives you hard stare. "Your mission will be to eliminate Ellisaria Adler von Hess."
