I try to conflate dwarves, halflings and gnomes together to cut down on the diversity of midgets in my settings. My favorite so far was that they are all different tenses of the same race, but over time they've adapted a larger racial divide through different social norms. Dwarves are the miners digging deeper and deeper into the world. Gnomes are the smiths and machinists building with what the dwarves give them, and halflings are merchants, peddling those creations to the surface. It was a system that worked well and made the people fabulously wealthy.
But over time, they grew into their roles and have departed from each other. Now dwarves have dug so deep, they've lost sight of the surface and sequester to themselves all of their earthly plunder. Gnomes build and invent endlessly, so closed-off in the ruins of dwarven civilization like your casual nerd, constantly recycling everything around them and erasing their past as they keep chugging on to the next big technological paradigm. And halflings have become so cozy in surface society, they're just short humans now with almost no connections to the underworld they once called home.

Halflings are happy people. They laugh, they sing, they see the joy in the world! Sure, this isn't universal, but overall halfings tend to be pleasant more than dour or brooding.

It was a class with three boys and three girls, all in the fourth grade.
They had been wondering about D&D for some time, since I liked to bring my dice and things in for other classroom activities.
I finally brought in my copy of the Moldvay Basic boxed set with Keep on the Borderlands.
Character creation went pretty smoothly. They liked shopping for equipment. Two of the boys chose fighters, while the third decided to play as a magic-user.
The other two girls decided to play as clerics.
Now, it's interesting to note that they had absolutely no idea what to make of clerics. They don't know anything about the old Dracula movies with Van Helsing played by Peter Cushing, and they don't know anything about the Knights Hospitalers, so they didn't really have any frame of reference.
When they all drew pictures of their characters, the fighters drew surprisingly accurate depictions of medieval plate maille, and the magic user was dressed up like Harry Potter.
Alice Victoria was dressed up in a frilly dress.
The two clerics however were depicted wearing the contemporary fashions of Korean girls. One of them was wielding a hammer and a shield with a green manji on it (I told the kids that clerics used holy symbols to fight vampires and zombies. Being a buddhist, the one girl chose the manji, or swastika as you know it, as her holy symbol.)

After bumping into a little old man who lost his wand somewhere in the caves of chaos, the party set out for adventure.
They encountered a group of bandits on the road red stars of chaos painted on their faces. They kids decided that these people must be indians, so they befriended them. With a favorable reaction roll and some negotiation, the heroes gained some henchmen.
The party came across a hill where some lizardmen were living. The thought of lizard monsters residing in (what they thought was) a grave site freaked them out, so they beat up the lizardmen and tied them up. They found some baby lizardfolk inside. After cooing about how cute that was, they decided to just steal everything and spare the lizardmen's lives. They never actually untied the adult lizardmen though...
There was the episode with the crazed hermit with his pet tiger in the hollowed-out tree. For some reason the kids decided the old man was some kind of pervert. I don't know where they got that because I honestly did not roleplay him like that. They did giggle at the picture in the book a lot. I guess it because the old guy wasn't wearing any clothes? Anyway, they decided to just walk away from that situation.
We didn't actually get very far into the caves of chaos. The kids killed some "dokkaebi" (I had to explain what goblins were) and some kobolds (I showed them stills of the little monster guys from Disney's Sleeping Beauty). They also massacred some helpless dwarves at the bottom of a pit that were just calling for help.
Then my co-teacher Stella (or "Stellator" as the foreign staff liked to call her) broke up the game and I wasn't allowed to play D&D with those kids any more.
Before I left that job though, I got copies of the basic rule books printed out at a cheap Korean printing shop, and I handed these out to each of the kids along with some d20's.

I like to think of halflings/hobbits as the Tolkien sort, with a mixture of comedy. Though that's mostly because the one halfling I've played with kept cracking jokes and bad puns. We actually ended up making a quick rolling rule to check if your character actually laughs at his terrible puns if you aren't already laughing because they were so damn common.

I like all of them to be honest: they have pretty neat things for rogues and even warriors if you think about it
I like them to have great variety, akin to humans whom they closely associate with, but with one defining trait; they absolutely do not give a fuck.
Some are sendetary people who make good farmers, bankers, and craftsman and other very useful and productive members of a human community, but they do watever they want in those regards and are extremely practical people; the human culture they associate with can go suck a dick if they don't like it, just like the hobbits of The Shire who basically ignored the entire outside world around them and nearly all of their own history because they almost universally couldn't be bothered to give a fuck avoid any of that garbage.
Nomadic halflings who make good adventurers are more like fantasy gypsies and move around a lot preserving a simplistic culture that takes bits of what it needs (both philosophically and literally) from nearby cultures but similarly to sendetary halflings they do not give a fuck what humans think about them, which is why they make such good thieves.
I also like both groups to not particularly put much stock in history and thus having no "great ancient lineage" like all other races; they just don't have the urge to conquer and spread like humans do, only build when necessary rather then to master their craft and show that mastery like dwarves, and don't live long to establish massive millennia-old kingdoms like elves.
They don't see this as a bad thing; they probably like to point out that the thing all of these fantasy empires and kingdoms have in common is they all fall apart eventually, while halflings continue existing without having lost anything of significance.
Rather then focus on history (which they assume is always written by the winner and thus always at least mildly untrustworthy) they like folktales and stories, especially since they note they often BECOME history given enough time.
