Imagine a fantasy world where:

>All humans wear armor all the time
>The wealthier the human, the lighter the armor

What else might we say about such a world?
>>
>>44154733
That's stupid.

You're stupid.
>>
sounds pretty metal
>>
So that ironman world where everyone has to wear the ironman armor or they die?
>>
>>44154733
Cumbersome and ridiculous as that would be, I kind of like the idea. Though I feel like weight shouldn't be the class factor. Shouldn't it be ornate and expensively durable vs simple, ugly, and practical?

Then you get those armorless whores and beggars. Poor, ugly and Irish. Suffer not the harlot who flaunts her exposed skin.
>>
Sun is a different kind of star or closer or something, so the radiation is more deadly. Wearing a layer of metal, even weak or light ones is sufficiently enough protection though.
>>
Lighter as in better use of the material or fantasy version of light?
>>
>>44154823

What if the armor is required because of environmental reasons and the rich require less armor because they can afford to stay inside sturdy structures without needing to go out to toil in the fields. As for the armor they do wear, the rich could employ the finest smiths who could make lightweight armor that is airtight and durable.
>>
>>44154867

You've omitted the third kind of light armor.
Probably for the best..
>>
>>44154841
But how did life come to be on such a planet? Stands to reason that the inhabitants would have some sort of natural protection if they were to evolve in radiation.
>>
>>44154883
>airtight
How would they breathe? Would oxygen tanks even exist in this world?
>>
>>44154928
There's only so much life can evolve to protect against something like that though.
>>
This >>44154823. The wealthy would prefer more ornate armor in order to flaunt their wealth and how impractically they can afford to live; hell, back in the day having a longer belt than you needed was a big deal.
>>
>>44154975
Well, yes. But that means it dies, not magically invents radiation-proof armor at the developmental stage.
>>
>>44154928
Unless it's a recent (like, a century or two) steller problem they all blame on magic.
>>
>>44154977

Couldn't it be like the tan thing though?

Tans were once seen as low-class. Now it's the opposite.

>>
>>44155020
Hypothetically, sure. But why would the poor put more effort into their armor than they could realistically afford? And why would the working class have impractical armor that's just going to get in the way of their work while the lazy nobles have the most functional, maneuverable suits?

Could the reason be a symbol of religious thought? Think about a monotheistic religion with heavy rules. One of the rules is to wear full metal armor constantly. Advocates of the church have argued that their deity meant this is needed even during sleep.

Bonus points if the deity is actually a single mechanical life form sent from another planet who took over during paleolithic times.

>But why would the poor put more effort into their armor than they could realistically afford?

Armor would need to be inexpensive to make, or very easy to come by.
>>
>>44155109
Going with what >>44155015 said. If the stellar radiation is attributed to evil sorcery, then you could totally spin a smith/miner church of armor production that "wards off evil and death" by armoring you up.

Imagine a church of blacksmiths with giant forges. And a right of passage to graduate into adulthood is helping the smithpriests forge armor personally for yourself that represents you and your family.
>>
>>44155117

>featureless armor
Don't women need special breastplates with added features though?
>>
>>44155153
Not if they have the DFC. But armor isn't usually one-size-fits all, even for dudes. Height, weight and proportions all need to be accounted for if you're making the full set.
>>

Also, in this world the wealthiest live deep underground while the poor live closer to the surface. The latter face greater exposure and require heavier armor.

This comes to mind:

>Before the elevator...

>Upper floors were seen as servants’ quarters or the attic apartments of the poor. Bernard quotes from Joseph Roth’s “Hotel Savoy,” whose main character stays in the unwanted upper floors. “Those who lived on high were in the depths, buried in airy graves, and the graves were in layers above the comfortable rooms of the well nourished guests sitting down below, untroubled by the flimsy coffins overhead.”

>Even after elevator buildings began appearing in New York, it took years to convince tenants to live in the upper reaches. In the first commercial building with an elevator, the Equitable Life headquarters, the insurance company took the lower offices, while the eighth floor held the custodian’s apartment.

Exactly. Unless this armor is somehow naturally occurring, somebody needs to put effort into making it regardless of the quality. Anything past the bare minimum is going to cost more because the blacksmith has to put time into designing it and making it.

>>44154733
Another big problem with this whole scenario: what do you do with kids? If it's an environmental thing, you can't just lock the kids away. At the same time, kids grow like weeds; you would need to get them a brand new suit (maybe not the helm) every year or so, at the least. Puberty would be an even worse period, getting a new piece(s) every few months for a few years.

Leather armour is still armour
>>

>Unless this armor is somehow naturally occurring, somebody needs to put effort into making it regardless of the quality

What if the armor is salvaged?
The surface could be strewn with armor-clad corpses for some reason.
>>
>>44154975
It could be a phenomenon that was introduced more recently, after evolution
>>
>>44155294
Wealthy families can afford new sets
Middle classroom the same, and orders adjustments to be made to the armor.
Lower class uses armor made for older brothers... Of your grandpa when they were kids.

Just like clothes, but more durable.

>At the same time, kids grow like weeds; you would need to get them a brand new suit (maybe not the helm) every year or so, at the least

Communal armor piles for the young?
Once a child outgrows a piece of armor, it is returned to the communal stockpile (in a temple?), and a slightly larger piece is selected?

It's one of the main parts of the Mandalorian code. Everybody should live a warrior's lifestyle, including crafting your own suit of armor, which is a rite of passage.

>>44155798
They aren't clones; >>44155779 was making a joke about how poorly the animators differentiated between the Mandalorians. The Mandalorians weren't an actual race; they were a society that accepted anybody into their ranks as long as they lived by the Mandalorian lifestyle. The armor also served to unify the many races that the Mandalorians were composed of; no matter how different they may be physically, they are all the same in their armor which helped remind them of their shared ideology.

Maybe it's something like the Quarians from ME?

For fastasy setting? Magic nukes fuck up the world, High levels of magic is toxic and armour protects against it, Lighter armour is better quality gear?

For scifi setting maybe some sort of bio weapon broke out and people have to suit up in order to stay safe?

Oh. That was good, though. Almost kind of the point of the war in the first place. They (or at least Canderous, the only one you get some perspective from) wanted a challenge, a thrilling final battle that would put all others to shame, and they got it at Malachor. Even in defeat, it was glorious.

And a few centuries later they were back on their feet just fine.

So my biggest issue with comments that followed the initial idea is that it was assuming that the industries used in clothing now would not change.

So yes, it will always be more expensive to put humans into armor, specifically metal knight armor, than it is to cloth them, however if normal clothing is not used/made/worn ever, then we would have an adjustment in industry to where metal is sought and produced more because everyone would need to be covered. Additionally although smithing is a learned skill there would be a much higher percentage of smiths in the land because supply/demand principles would come into effect here.

Still a silly idea, but possible with some initial assumptions.
