I would want to test the balance on the thing before using it for everything. If it rolled suck, I'd use it for "secret player rolls", if it rolled high I'd use it for NPC rolls. I wouldn't use it at all as a player if it rolled suck.

That's the way they did d4s back in the day. I agree that number-on-top is superior, but that's like 1% of the problem with that die. The other 99% is the fact that pyramidal dice are trash. The die on the left is about 10 times better, but still pretty bad. The die on the right is actually pretty good.

My friend has an 8-sided d4 and it's pretty easy to get mixed up with a regular d8. But seeing as there's been no problem with the 12-sided d4s, I think that's more a matter of presentation than concept.
I do think that having a distinct shape for each die is nice; it's just that the pyramid one happens to "roll" like crap. But I still think they could come up with a good shape that's unique to d4s. Maybe take the crystal d4 and shorten it (so it's more like a d6 with 2 rounded sides), so it can easily roll around in the hand, turning on any axis.

I've never used one of q-workshop's runic d4s, so I don't know how well it works in practice (maybe the sharp corners are too "grabby" for it to roll well), but it's a neat idea at least.
I'm rather amazed that d16s aren't more prevalent, as it seems obvious that there needs to be a midway step between d12s and d20s (but having d14s, d16s and d18s leads to too many dice that look too similar).

I'm not sure that it's ever been a problem with the twelve-sided d4s other than with the sort of noobs who'd be likely to confuse shit like d8s and d10s, or d12s and d20s. They look different enough that they stand out.

This is definitely worse than just learning to recognize the right die. For one thing, there are those fuckers who insist on going 1-4 twice (so that 5 starts back over as 1, 6 is 2, etc.) instead of dividing by 2, which creates confusion. For another, there will eventually be somebody who forgets what they're doing and reads the die at face value.

Go to your local LGS, buy one gravity feed pack of a heroclix figure, and use the plastic casing it comes in that protects the figure from breakage. It's small enough that it isn't obnoxious, the top slides on and off so you can interchange dice, and you can shake it good and not worry about your dice flying off the table.
It won't give you that pop noise that I'm sure you are looking for but it is a good easy thing to get.
