Welcome to The Lost Island Quest. Last thread our hero, Alan Rodain, learned some of the basics of wizardry. He then went to The Sword and Shield Tavern, drank with his friends and ended up fighting Gabby twice, before passing out.

Your eyes drift open. Pain. Pain is your body. You groan as the morning sunlight hits your face through the window of your room in the Circle. You notice Ed, doing crunches. He looks up at you as you make verbal your agony.

“Finally awake, Alan?” He laughs as he gets up and walks over to where you're lying in bed. “You looked like absolute crap when Quissonce and that other beautiful woman dragged you up here.” He inspects your face. “Still look a bit like crap. Hungover?” You nod.

“Marble. Bring me my marble.” He looks at you puzzled before searching through your pack and handing it to you. You hold it and try to channel healing energy into your body. Nothing. Shit, guess that daily hour of prayer is necessary. You drop it back into your pack. You're in too much pain to focus on praying right now. He hands you a glass of water which you drain completely.

You focus all your strength, skill and willpower to sit up and swing your legs off the side of the bed. There's a bowl of eggs that Ed brought up for you to eat on the central table. You get up and hobble towards it, shoveling some in your mouth. Your memories of last night trickle back. Well, how are we going to handle this?

As you finish the eggs, you turn to Ed who has moved on to pushups.

“Other beautiful woman?” He looks up at you.

“Cute half-elf chick.”

“You could tell?” He's talking about Rowe obviously. She looks practically human, unless he saw her ears. He looks at you incredulously.

“You couldn't?” You make a 'tsk' sound before washing the bowl out and leaving your room. You're still sore all over, but you figure it would be best to settle some debts you may have accrued before fixing yourself up.

You wonder where you would be able to find the 'cute half-elf chick'. You check that hostel you stayed in your first night and don't see her. The next logical place to look would be The Sword and Shield. Sure enough, you spot her eating a bowl of noodles in a back corner, chatting with Dolah and Eve. You make your way over to their booth and wave. Rowe waves back before you sit across from her.

“You feeling OK buddy?” she asks. Dolah and Eve, who were both absent for that night, notice all your wounds and bruises.

“Yeah. Sorry about causing all that commotion last night. How much did paying for all the damages cost?” She laughs and waves it off.

“I just gave him twenty gold. I wouldn't worry about it.” Dolah looks at you in concern.

“What happened to you last night?” Rowe looks at her.

“Gabby.” Dolah starts to bristle. Rowe moves to calm her down before she storms off looking to start another fight. “Hey, it was consensual. Just a bit of a drunken spat.” Dolah reluctantly gives up the chance to be angry at Gabby and reaches over to touch you. Weird, you feel yourself start to get better. The hangover lessens, your muscles relax, the stiffness goes away. She just healed you. You search her for a holy symbol, but she seems to lack one. You look at her questioningly. She acknowledges your confusion before explaining.

“Father Calloway was also intrigued by it. I've been able to heal others without the use of a conduit, other than my own hands. He says he's never seen someone able to do that in his stay on this island.”
Huh, that's interesting.

You go into your bag and pull out twenty gold pieces that you hand over to Rowe. She thanks you before pocketing it. You then head over to the bartender. It's the young kid from last night. He must work the bar from midnight to noon while the muscular bald man works the day shift. Yeesh, must have to deal with all the drunks at night and the morning breakfast rush.

“Hey, um, sorry about causing that ruckus last night and breaking a lot of your stuff.” He gives you a judging look for a few seconds as he raps his knuckles on the bar, before his face relaxes a bit and a smidgen of forgiveness enters his tone of voice.

“It's fine. Just try not to do it again. I know the whole new found powers gets people amped up and willing to beat each other to a pulp, but we have a back alley for a reason.” You nod at him as you buy a drink and promise it will be your only one for a long while.

You walk back to your group and sit down with your friends. As you make small talk, the set of double doors to the bar opens and Gabby walks in. She's wearing a brand new robe, lacking all the rips, tears, and beer stains the other one possessed. She also has a pair of blackened out spectacles on her face. She saunters over to the bar and purchases some sausages. She spots you sitting together, and after she gets her food she grabs a chair, pulling it up to sit with the rest of you.

“You feeling okay Gabby?” Rowe asks with a smirk.

“Feel like shit. Don't remember much.” She starts digging into her food, before pausing as you all watch her. “Did I do something embarrassing last night?”

“Yes.” Dolah answers immediately. Rowe rolls her eyes before giving her own opinion.

“You and Alan got into a fight in the bar.” She chews her food a bit before talking again.

“Did I lose?” Rowe squints and looks at the ceiling.

“You were losing when we broke it up.” She taps her utensil on the table.

“Okay, but did I give up or did he knock me out?”

“No.” She nods before going back to her food.

“So I didn't do anything embarrassing last night. Good to know.” She goes back to eating. Dolah still looks upset.

You finish your drink and bid farewell to your allies. It's been about nine days since that last excursion. You actually don't recall him ever saying anything about reporting in later or when your next assignment would be. Wouldn't want an obligation like that sneak up on you.

So you head to the Overseer's complex. You ask the gate guards to see Blackburn and five minutes later you're told he's free and can see you. You are escorted by five armed men to his office. It oddly seems much more secure than last time you came here.

You enter Blackburn's office to him sitting behind his desk. He motions for you to take a seat.
“So Alan. I've heard you had quite the night last night. Try to keep the rough-housing to a minimum. What can I do for you?”

“I was wondering when our next mission would be assigned.” Blackburn smiles at you.

“Never.” You look at him a little puzzled. “I usually don't assign our operatives missions. That initial one was merely to give you all a taste for what they're like and the rewards they bring.”

“But, how does that work?” You have enough money to not do anything for quite a while.

“Easy. The only operatives I select to come here are ones who possess . . . ambition. A drive that spurs them to keep going out there. I've learned rather quickly that forcing people to risk their lives when they don't want to leads to poor results. You can choose what you want to do. Choose how long you want to prepare for it and choose how you accomplish it, within a certain set of guidelines, of course. Now, if you'd like to know how you can help out, well, currently there are three situations that seem the most pressing to Seaside at the moment. The kobolds, the lizardfolk and the orcs. Which would you like to hear about?"

You've been hearing about these orcs since Rowe informed you about them. But you're also probably one of the reasons the lizardfolk are a pressing concern. So you ask about both.

“Ah. Well, the orc situation is a rather simple one. They've attacked this settlement multiple times. Any attempts at communication have met a gruesome end. And we've yet to take one alive, so we know nothing about their culture or how it pertains to Mainland orc culture. Also, recently, a group of Fighter's Guild members were ambushed and the guild is very interested in some attempt to either seek retribution or enact a rescue. Operative Archer is already investigating that, but I'm sure she'd appreciate your assistance.”

“Archer?” Blackburn realizes his gaff.

“Sorry, Rowena. And the lizardfolk, while they've been a huge asset in relating to us knowledge about the swampy area to our west, which we've learned for a pittance in terms of resources, require some aid from us if we're to prop them up as a significant ally in that area. If you wish to learn more about how you can help them, you should speak to their representative, Ssett. I believe he is currently staying at the Research Library with Archiver. Gilda.”

Okay. With that information onslaught over you decide to head out from Blackburn's office and go to the Fighter's Guild. You end your meeting cordially before being escorted again to the exit.

The Fighter's Guild is on the east side of Seaside. It's a very large wooden structure, four stories tall, that also happens to be very wide. A big banner hangs in front of it's large, ornately carve double doors proudly declaring it's official title: CENTER FOR MARTIAL MASTERY. You open the double doors and step inside to a large open room with a multitude of armed men and women, milling about and conversing with each other. Racks of weapons, shields and armors line the walls and small sand rings and wooden platforms litter the huge area.

It's much more disorganized than how the Circle appears, but seems to have much in common with the structure of the Circle's library. In that there is none. You spot a wooden table near the back of the room that is tended to by a rugged looking man with a huge sword on his back and a set of gleaming armor that you quickly detect is magical. You walk over and he leans over the table to shake your hand.

“Hello. Don't think I've seen you before. My name's Gale and I'm the president/secretary/treasurer of the Center for Martial Mastery.” He brings his voice down to a whisper. “You can call it the Fighter's Guild if you want though.” He comes back to his more formal, commanding tone. “If you wish to join and have access to our arms, armor, training, manuals and stables, the initial joining fee is 100 gold pieces, with a 10 gold piece upkeep required at the beginning of every successive month after you've joined.”

You fish ten platinum pieces out of your pocket and hand them over to him. He takes them and drops them off in a box on his table before asking your name.

“Alan Rodain.” He scribbles it down.

“Okay. And Alan. Are you more of a sneaky type, a get mad type, an unarmed type, or what?” You're going to have this issue again, aren't you?

“I'm a bit of an all-rounder, hopefully. I was a cavalry captain in the Army, though. So I guess I'm best at a lance on horseback.” Gale nods.

“Ah. Then you have a horse?” You nod. “We have a stable in the back. Being a member gets you free feed and stabling." Huh, this will shave off about five gold a month.

“So Gale. I heard some of your members were captured by orcs.” He sighs in exasperation as he drops his quill to put his hand to his forehead.

“I swear, some of these fucking new guys have no sense in their head. About five relatively new members got it in their heads that they were going to capture a live orc for a big payday. They brought a bunch of non-lethal weapons with them to take them alive. Nets, bolas, staves, one guy was just going to punch them. I warned them they were underestimating how tough those fuckers are, but did they listen to Gale? No. And now scouts have reported they've either been killed or captured. No bodies, but a bunch of nets and bolas laying around in the forests near a sign of battle. Guess the orcs were smart enough to understand how useless those fucking things are. So they're either dead or captured. If you can bring back even one of those idiots alive I'll owe you one. And if they are all dead, well, I'll owe you half of one for the confirmation.”

So that adds incentive to dealing with the orcs. You look around the room and see the crowd of people hasn't changed much.

You decide to peruse some of the reading material that Gale's spoken about. He gives you directions and you move through the building to a room filled with scrolls in wicker baskets and books in shelves and stacked on tables. This library looks a lot smaller than The Circle's, but at least it has some more organization. You look at a couple of the books and scrolls and see a lot of things you already know how to do or don't seem like they would actually work.

You eventually come to about three interesting looking pieces of reading. One is a scroll and the other two are books.

Defensive Spinning by one S. P. That's the scroll.

Armor: You're Doing it Wrong by Betsy. Huh, Betsy the sergeant of the guards? And

The Art of Staring Death in the Face and Laughing by Commander Hildebrandt. Never heard of him.

By the time you have these three things collected you feel a finger tap your shoulder. You turn around to see Rowe.

“Hey Alan, see you've finally joined.” She looks at what you've picked out. “Huh. Interesting selection. Well seeing as you're here, want me to take you down to the archery range and show you how to shoot a longbow? I could also show you how to fire a crossbow if that's more your style. Or a short bow if you're looking to do more short-range engagements.”

“I'd like to learn how to use the shortbow, actually. That way I could have something that works from horseback.” Rowe nods. She agrees that's a pretty smart consideration.

She grabs a pair of shortbows and takes you out to the archery range out back of the building. There are rows of targets lined up at different distances to practice different ranged weaponry. Apparently it's much similar to using the longbow, except you have more variability in how you can angle it considering how much more maneuverable it is. You two take turns shooting at different targets. You watch her and then try your best to mimic her posture, stance and hand placement. When you are up to shoot she comes up behind you and gently corrects your positioning. Lining up your arms and giving you tips on when to breath and how to arc the shot. She points out how you have to pay attention to wind strength and direction through observing your environment.

And you take to it. In maybe three hours you've got it down. Rowe's impressed with just how much you live up to your reputation and starts the horseback archery portion of the training.

Despite this being much harder to manage for most people, you somehow master this skill even quicker than regular shooting. Maybe it's because of how long you've spent with horses, but you're able to guide Tornado effectively, with you almost swearing he knows how to move to help you pull off the perfect shot. You skillfully synthesize accounting for the speed you're moving at, the direction and strength of the wind and the location of your target. All in all, by 6pm you're a whiz with a bow and a horse.

You and Rowe grab dinner from the guild cafeteria as you take your break.

“So, I think I've finally figured out where that band of orcs who've captured those Fighter's Guild members are lurking around. They haven't retreated too deep into the forest. I think they're skulking around looking to make a repeat performance. I'm going to try to find them tomorrow. You want to come?”

“Sure. Just the two of us, or . . .” Rowe ponders a bit as she munches on her salad.

“Hm, well Kyra and Gabby can sneak well enough. And I'd give Gabby the best odds of taking one alive if we told her to. Dolah's part-orc so who knows, maybe they'll talk to her if we capture some of them. And Quissonce and Eve have magical abilities that could be useful. The bigger the group we take the more noise we'll make and of course we have some conflicting personalities, but I don't know. We could make it work.” You finish your dinner together before you decide to see Ssett at the research library.

You find Ssett chatting with Gilda in the human tongue, actually. He's not that good a speaker, but he seems to have picked up a fair amount of the language fairly quickly. When he sees you he waves.

“Hello Alan. How has day been?” Impressive. You reply in Draconic.

“Pretty good so far. So Ssett, I hear that your tribe could use some help. What's it need, exactly?”

“The Acidspit Clutch is only one Clutch of many in the swamp. Rival clutches. Other enemies. Hags. Dangerous beasts. If Seaside helps the Acidspit Clutch in the removal of its enemies and gains control of the swamp, we are in a much better position to lend aid to your own settlement in its times of need. We are currently in conflict with the Kingmaker Clutch. Stalemate. If you helped us defeat and assimilate this Clutch, we would control more territory and be a more powerful force in the swamp.”

Seems there's a more pronounced time limit on the orc job so that seems fairly settled. Still hoping to get additional armor, maybe a cloak, and anything to help us be sneaky. Oh and a wicked short bow.

Not that anon but what I think he was getting at is we should strengthen some of our existing skills, otherwise we run the danger of being a level one everything. You're right that we're a generalist, but many of the skills we have now are just introductions to them. I'd like to develop one or two first before we start on alchemy. Alchemy definitely will be useful further down the road though.

Some sell even stranger things. You decide to sell your old backpack and pick up a masterwork backpack instead to make it easier to carry your many objects. You also sell those two rubies you got from those kobolds for 200 gold pieces.

In one of the magic shops you see a cloak that the goblin running it tells you was made by ancient elves. You cast detect magic to discover that it really should enhance your ability to sneak. However, he's selling the cloak for 2500 gold pieces. You'd be hard-pressed to come up with that amount of gold before tomorrow.

Can we upgrade our armor but not to full plate for a reduced price? Like just vembraces/guantlets and shinguards and or sabatons? Less money but less AC?

You sell your hide armor. It's merely taking up space in your room at this point. And you purchase a composite longbow as well as some arrows. You find yourself a weapons shop that specializes in top-of-the-line weaponry. The catchphrase the blacksmith who runs it gives is a tad annoying, but you cannot fault the work he does. You purchase yourself a finely-crafted saber and quickly pawn your old, standard issue one off at a general adventuring store.

You think you might want to sell and buy some more things, but the shops are starting to close as night settles in Seaside.

You decide to settle in with a good book at the Circle before you have to head out tomorrow. The question is, which one?

You go back to your dorm room and crack open that giant tome by Azdor. It's cordoned off into eight separate sections. One for each school of arcane magic then. You've got about three hours until midnight, so you better start speeding if you want to make any progress tonight.

The first school Azdor talks about is one he calls Abjuration. It is what he calls 'the magic with which to fight magic'. It's focus is entirely on protecting the body from magical attacks, the elements, and 'outsiders'. Outsiders are apparently creatures like demons and angels from other planes of existence. That's a trippy thought. You guess it's possible, maybe that's where The Great Will lives? The most basic abjuration spell Azdor simply titles 'resistance' and is focused on using magical energy to create an all-purpose buffer against a variety of poisons, charm effects and hazards.

You then move on to Conjuration. The focus of Conjuration is to utilize proper ritual gestures, markings and verbal commands to bring forth objects, creatures and effects from these other planes of existence. Certain casters, apparently, are focused solely on the summoning of monsters from other realms to do their bidding. You've seen a couple students in the Circle using magic to bring about animals for short periods of time, but you never thought these were real creatures from some other universe. What must that be like, to be pulled from one plane of existence to the next for a short few minutes. You suddenly feel slightly less safe doing nothing. Azdor includes an example of a conjuration spell he entitles 'drench' which summons rain from a dimension where it is always raining to rain on your target. He mentions using this ability multiple times on Flid Havrang for his annoying behavior.

The last school you're able to read about before midnight rolls around is Divination. Divination is the use of magic to aid the caster in both sight and clarity. It can both reveal the future and the unknown. Apparently read magic and detect magic both fall under this category as they illuminate to the caster what would be unknown without magical aptitude. Azdor also mentions that divination can be used to discover unknown mundane elements of a person. The example he uses is a spell he names 'Detect Poison' after detect magic. It allows for the caster to know if something or someone has been poisoned. He mentions some anecdote about a gift he received from Flid being poisoned. These two seem to not really like each other.

You close the book as Ed's light snores start to disrupt you concentration. You're going to have to get up rather early tomorrow. But you could spend one more hour trying to accomplish one last task.

Well, if you want more time to study in the day you want to master that ability to not sleep. You adopt Quissonce's meditative position once more to focus yourself. And you settle in to yourself. You focus on the new spells you've learned from this book and memorize to yourself exactly the hand motions and the verbal components. You ponder the power of blood and focus on your heartbeat. You think of how to arc the shot of an arrow and of the tenets of The Great Will. And then you think about Ed snoring. Your eyes shoot open as Ed's snoring begins to get louder. Or maybe not louder, maybe you're just getting more used to silence. You huff and then sneak out of your room silently so as not to wake Ed.

Well, if you're going to try to do this you're going to need to find someplace quiet. You think you'll try for that alcove Ed was talking about. This late at night no one should be up so it should be even more secluded and serene.

You make it down to the first floor and head to Ed's secret alcove. Turns out you guessed wrong about the no one being up at this hour. Quissonce is sitting in Ed's alcove. Although, luckily enough she seems to be doing her meditation instead of reading. This is good! You could use the example.

You quietly slink over next to her and sit down on one of those soft red pillows with the zigzag pattern on them. Your posture and position mimics hers as best you can and then you try again.

They are the people, if solely their ancient kind, whose technique you are trying to master. They believed in a spirit inhabiting all living things. It pervaded the Earth's forests and jungles, its beasts and its people. All living things connected by one greater thread of spirituality. While humankind may see the world as consisting of many distinct, unique moving parts, the elves see it for the one living force it is. You ponder on that. All living things connected. All living things as one.

You enter a meditative calm. A white void. Absolute nothing.


You feel Quissonce get up next to you. You wake up. Quissonce is standing over you.

“Hey Alan. Catching a nap?” Damnit! You fell asleep again. Maybe you can't master this ability. You put your hands on your head as you sigh out.

“How long was I asleep?”

“About four hours.” Huh. That makes it what, 4am. You don't feel tired. You get up and stretch a bit.

“Want to grab something to eat?” Quissonce asks.

“Yeah, sure.” The two of you head to the Circle's cafeteria and grab yourself some hard bread and cheese.

As you eat and chat about your studies and your lives a realization dawns on you.

You're fully rested. You're feeling sharp, refreshed and ready for the rest of the day. On 4 hours.

Maybe . . . maybe 4 hours is all you need.
