This is Boruto Quest, a quest set in the universe of Naruto. It is during the generation of Naruto's son, shortly after everyone has graduated from their Genin exam. I haven't kept up with the series beyond the end of the original one, so this one is intended to recapture the feel of that time of Naruto. I will not be incorporating the main show or the Boruto movie's plot into the quest, although some recognizable characters will be present. You play as a 12 year old Genin graduate named Takeshi. You have been assigned a Jounin squad leader named Hanto, and your two squadmates are Kichiro, a young delinquent, and Ai, a strange social outcast of a girl. You are of average skill in most aspects, although your sharp intelligence has recently been making itself apparent. Preparations for the final tournament of the Chunin Exams has begun, and Genin all over the Leaf Village training under wise masters. Today you search for one such master.
Once you get done with breakfast, you head home with your brother and get settled down in your room for a short while. It's been an age since you sat down and read a comic book or watched some TV, so it's nice to have a little time to relax. Your brother heads off for a shift at work, and you mentally collect yourself for the rest of the day.

At once, you decide on going over to visit Shikadai. Aside from wanting to know if he can help you find a teacher, you're desperately curious to know if he and his squad one their matches or not. It's about a twenty minute walk until you reach his clan's residential area. It's still quite small, especially in comparison to the large expanse of the Hyuuga Clan's residence. It's not long before you find Shikadai's house, the largest in the Nara district. His father, Shikamaru Nara, is the head of the Clan. The Nara have grown in fame and recognition throughout the world, even moreso then before.
You rap the wooden door with your knuckle several times, and a few moments later Temari Nara opens up the door. She has a metal mixing bowl in her arms, with a whisk rapidly beating whatever's inside in the other hand. She looks annoyed for a fraction of a second, until she sees that it's you and smiles. "Oh, hello Takeshi. Congratulations on your win in the preliminaries! I'm so proud of you and Shikadai!"
After a respectful bow, you smile. "So Shikadai won his fight. That's great. Is he here? I'd like to ask him about what I missed, if he's not busy."
She steps away, leading you into the house. "Sure, sure. He's probably taking a nap on the porch or something, right around the corner there."

She steps back into the kitchen, and you slide open the door to the porch. The noon sun is shining brightly, but even so directly in front of you is Shikadai sprawled out on the porch, using the shade of the awning. There's a chubby black cat resting on his chest, curled up into a ball. It slowly moves up and down as Shikadai breathes.
You tap him with your foot, and a single eye snaps open.s. He sits up, and the cat rolls off into his lap. Shikadai rubs his eyes. "So you're alive. That's good news. We were all starting to think you'd croaked, after shooting blood everywhere like that."

You sit down on the porch, letting your legs hang over the side. Shikadai calmly strokes his cat. "I should tell you how the match looked from my perspective, sometime. It was probably really confusing to everyone else, heh."
Shikadai chuckles behind you. "You don't say. To us, it looked as if Roku was losing his mind. Dodging at nothing and completely ignoring the attacks you were hitting him with. At first, it made us realize how much of a threat you could actually be, even one on one."
You look over, raising an eyebrow. "Us? You and your squad?"
Shikadai strokes his chin. "Everyone, really. No one said it, but everyone had to be thinking it."
You look back to the grass. "I'm just glad I won, really. It was so tense in the moment, I still can't believe it."
Shikadai laughs, causing the cat in his lap to step away and come over to you. "Same here. My mom's going to work me to death in training, she says."
You sigh. "I still need to find a teacher. I'll never be able to keep up if I don't."
Shikadai stands up, stretching. "Your sensei can't teach you?"
You shake your head. "He's teaching Kichiro, and I don't know anyone else."
Shikadai frowns, although you can't see it. He's looking at you contemplatively. "That's rough."
Temari opens up the porch door. "Hey boys, I'm gonna have to break up this party for now. I need Shikadai to help me in the kitchen. You can come by again later if you like, Takeshi."
Shikadai groans. "I have to help make my own celebratory dinner? What a dr-"
Temari shoots up a finger, and presses it up against Shikadai's lips, silencing him. "Ah-ah! No! If I hear that /one/ more time, I swear.."
You wave goodbye and quietly step past Temari, walking out the door.

You slip your hands in your pockets as you rack your brain for answers, wondering who would possibly be willing to teach you for the month. It seems as if there's no hope short of putting a sign on a stick and standing around in the middle of town, begging for what you can get.
Maybe you should just go to the training field and exercise as much as you can. Or go to the library and study all day. B ut will it be enough? It got you to this point, but just barely. You're looking down at the ground, deep in thought as you walk.
That blood jutsu Roku used. It could have taken you out in one strike. Then there's Mari, Sarada, Boruto, Shikadai, all incredible fighters who are in this tournament. People you'll probably have to fight at one point or another.
As you're walking, you notice that you've suddenly stepped into the shadow of a man much taller than you. You raise your head up, and find that the sun is just behind his head, making it difficult to see his face. He speaks in a smooth, but bored voice. You recognize that voice, in fact. But from where?
"Takeshi. I hear that you're in need of a teacher."
He steps to the side, and out of the sun. You see the scarred face of Shikamaru Nara looking down at you with a smirk. His dark eyes seem contemplative and vast, as opposed to the piercing accuracy of Shikadai or Temari.

To be fair on pretty much every other front Naruto's regime has directly or indirectly made things immensely better. Politically(dudes is charismatic as hell and great at finding the middle ground) militarily(every ninja of this age is better than last generation's and the dude can curbstomp almost anyone easily), technologically (sooooooo many new toys and older thing getting put to better/more efficient use), and bureaucratically(Shadow clones everywhere acting alike make the paperwork clusterfuck somewhat manageable). You shrug. "I guess so. I do enjoy fighting a lot."

You smile from ear to ear. "That's fantastic! When can we start?"
Shikamaru checks his watch. "Hmm..now."
The two of you both walk towards the training field, and arrive not long after.
It's early in the afternoon, and the trees are swaying gently in the breeze. It's bright and sunny, with few clouds. You stand across from Shikamaru, who has his hands in his pockets.
"Okay, for this month, I've planned a curriculum of training sessions. I've already deduced what jutsu of mine will be the most helpful to you, and what order to train you in. Over the course of this month, just tell me what you'd like to learn and I'll teach you as best as I can. Shall we get started?"
(You have thirty days to train. Spending time on certain areas will increase the relevant stat, and Shikamaru will teach you Jutsu he knows. As an Elite Jounin he is capable in all forms of combat, most notably Genjutsu and Non-elementals Ninjutsu. He does not know Water Jutsu.)

Well yes and no. You're right in that most illusions won't work, but i think the sound stuff still would.
All those people are going to be end-tier enemies in a tournament anyway. I mean you also have to consider the vast majority of potential opponents are not going to be rocking magic-eye tricks.
My main issue with our training is that we shouldn't be training for just a tournament, but to just be a better ninja. and Genjutsu is our primary strength. Also It gives us free boosts in chakra control, which is great, because it means more attacks, and means we can do more with our trump card.

You raise an eyebrow. "The Sound Village?"
He nods. "Orochimaru's personal goons. This girl I fought used auditory based Genjutsu to trap me, and there wasn't much I could do about it. I turned it around in the end, but she caught me off guard nonetheless. The reason I mention this is because I noticed your usage of bells and Genjutsu. If you mix this technique with your others, it'd be much more effective."

He begins your training, and you go through a grueling series of mental exercises. You repeatedly attempt to cast the most powerful illusions you can muster on Shikamaru for the entire day, until you're a sweaty, sleepy mess. He tells you to meet here tomorrow morning at 5 AM Sharp, and you head home for some sleep.

The next day goes about the same. You completely expend your chakra until about noon, practicing controlling it in the most efficient way possible while creating the largest effect. After lunch, Shikamaru teaches you the process for the Paralyzing Bells Jutsu. You tire a wire through a bell attatched you a senbon, and fling it into a tree. This jutsu requires no handseals, creating an ever larger strain on your chakra control. Beads of sweat drop down your forehead as you focus the jutsu through the wire, before tugging gently on the bell. Sure enough it rings clearly, and you see Shikamaru wince and drop to his knees. "It's working. The first phase of this jutsu is paralysis. If you're quick, you could finish off an opponent now. But the second phase sets in soon after.."
Shikamaru waits a few seconds, before standing back up. "There. Now there's all sorts of illusions of you surrounding you. The issue is that they're all within a fixed position, perfectly mimicking you. So while now you can throw a lot of illusions along with your attacks, out in the open it won't take long for the opponent to realize which one is real. This is when you mix in other moving clones, or substantial clones if you have them. It's an additional layer of defense that hampers your opponent at the same time."
You spend the rest of the night training the technique, and wake up on the third morning to meet with Shikamaru again. You've learned the Paralyzing Bells Jutsu!

The next five days are no where as difficult as before, the previous training of both your mind and body coming together to enhance the power of your Ninjutsu. Being so balanced in both aspects causes your chakra reserves to swell, and you master the Haze Clone Jutsu within two days. Shikamaru decides to teach you the Shadow Shuriken Jutsu as well.

Hideki gives you the rundown on the jutsu and teaches you what he can of it, however it's no easy process. This is the highest ranking Ninjutsu that you've ever attempted to learn, and you're going to have to reserve a second day of training in order to practice it properly. You have some idea of what you're capable of, though. Once you've completed training, the Hydro Sword should be about the size of a short sword, and be as strong as steel. It'll require some small amount of chakra to maintain for long periods of time, but otherwise is cost effective to summon and disperse repeatedly.
Your brother tells you that if you specialize in this weapon, it can become one of the most versatile tools that you have.
After this training, you head back the next day to meet with Shikamaru. You have 18 days left.
